PURPOSE: Patients with noninfectious intermediate uveitis, posterior uveitis, or panuveitis typically are treated with oral corticosteroids and immunosuppressive agents, such as antimetabolites and calcineurin inhibitors. Goals of treatment include suppression of ocular inflammation (inactive disease) and reduction of oral corticosteroids to a prednisone dosage of ≤7.5 mg/day (corticosteroid sparing) or, if possible, discontinuation of prednisone. Oral Administration of Piperine Ameliorates Experimental Autoimmune Uveitis.

This study aimed to evaluate the impact of piperine on experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU). EAU was induced by immunization with interphotoreceptor retinoid-binding protein emulsified in complete Freund adjuvant. Starting from day 8 post-induction, Lewis rats were given piperine (0, 20, 40, and 80 mg/kg-P.O.) or prednisolone (10 mg/kg-P.O.) for 18 consecutive days. Optic Nerve Head Infiltration in Presumed Tuberculous Uveitis.

To report the clinical and multimodal imaging findings of presumed tuberculous optic nerve head (ONH) infiltration in 3 patients at a tertiary eye care center. In addition to unilateral presumed tuberculous ONH infiltration, all patients had clinical findings suggestive of tuberculous choroidal involvement which was confirmed by Indocyanine green angiography (ICGA). All patients were treated successfully with a combination of antituberculous regimen and systemic corticosteroids.

Nontubercular Mycobacteria Associated Uveitis in HIV Positive Patients.

PURPOSE: To report clinical features and outcomes of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) presenting as uveitis in HIV positive patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Retrospective study of HIV positive patients who were diagnosed as uveitis due to NTM. RESULTS: Six eyes of four HIV positive patients with NTM were studied. Average age at presentation was 35.5 years (range 30-38). With specific PCR primers, Mycobacterium avium was detected in three patients (75%) and Mycobacterium fortuitum in one patient (25%).
