Vaginal clear cell adenocarcinoma (CCA) is well known to be associated with prenatal diethylstilbestrol exposure. We present a vaginal CCA with congenital anomalies of the genitourinary tract without prenatal diethylstilbestrol exposure. A 54-year-old woman complained of a 3-month history of genital bleeding. The examination revealed CCA at the anterior vagina and congenital anomalies. An anterior pelvic exenteration was performed. Macroscopically, bicornuate uterus, vaginal septum and left ureteral agenesis were found. Microscopically, vaginal CCA coexisted with adenosis and both metanephric

BACKGROUND: The development of a carcinoma in a neovagina constructed in patients with congenital vaginal agenesis is rare.
CASE: To our knowledge, this is the first report of a squamous cell carcinoma developing in a neovagina that had been constructed by a simple cleavage technique without tissue transplantation. The latency period between reconstruction and tumor diagnosis was 20 years, during which the patient regularly used a prosthesis. The most important observation during this time was the repeated formation of granulation tissue and chronic inflammatory pseudopolyps in the neovagina,

A case of benign polypoid rhabdomyoma of the vagina in a 57 years old multipara is reported. The diagnosis confirmed by light and electron microscopy, allowed to estimate the tumour as a benign analogen of sarcoma botryoides.

Aggressive angiomyxoma (AA) is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm occurring almost exclusively in the vulvovaginal region and which has a wide differential diagnosis. It has previously been suggested that the nuclear transcription factor HMGA2 is a useful marker of AA, although the number of studies is limited. We investigated HMGA2 immunoreactivity in a large series (n=284) of vulvovaginal mesenchymal lesions. HMGA2 nuclear staining was classified as diffuse (≥50%), focal (<50%), or negative. Of 38 cases of AA, 26 (68%) were positive; 77% (n=20) of these exhibited diffuse staining. Of the 41 smooth

Epidermotropic metastases from internal malignancies are exceedingly rare. We report a striking example of epidermotropic metastatic carcinoma of the lower female genital tract to the skin of the abdomen and groin. Atypical cells were scattered throughout the epidermis, mimicking Bowen's disease. Focally, islands of atypical squamous cells were also found in the adjacent dermis. Histopathologically, the lesion resembled a primary invasive squamous cell carcinoma. However, the clinical history of a metastatic carcinoma of the genitalia and the clinical presentation with multiple lesions militat

Female adnexal tumor of wolffian origin (FATPWO) is a lesion that predominantly occurs in the broad ligament. Its occurrence in the right paravaginal area is rare; only one other case has been reported to occur at this site. The authors report a case of paravaginal FATPWO in a 20-year-old woman that recurred twice during a 5-year period. The microscopic and ultrastructural features of this lesion were identical to other cases of FATPWO reported in the literature. This tumor must be recognized, especially at this site, so that it is not confused with vaginal adenocarcinoma related to diethylsti

OBJECTIVE: There is a lack of safety data supporting the use of hormone therapy in women who have had breast cancer and who have complained of genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM). The objective was to test the efficacy of two non-hormonal therapies for vaginal dryness.
METHODS: This was a randomized trial with 52 women with breast cancer who were being treated with tamoxifen and who complained of vaginal dryness. The volunteers answered two questionnaires to evaluate sexual function (Female Sexual Function Index, FSFI) and a customized GSM questionnaire. The women were randomized into t

BACKGROUND: Women with human immunodeficiency virus have higher rates of abnormal cervical and vaginal cytology and, subsequently, of cervical and vaginal cancers. Although professional bodies currently advocate for indefinite cytology screening for women living with human immunodeficiency virus, these recommendations are based on expert opinion, not evidence-based. In the general population, women who have never had an abnormal cytology result can cease screening at age 65 years. This is due to the relatively low incidence of dysplasia in this group and the risk of false-positive results as w

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection on colposcopic and histologic findings and clinical outcome in women who have abnormal Papanicolaou smears.
METHODS: We conducted a prospective study of women with abnormal Papanicolaou smears from among those participating in a longitudinal study of HIV infection, human papillomavirus infection, and genital neoplasia. Women with squamous intraepithelial lesions (SIL) on blindly interpreted Papanicolaou smears were referred for colposcopy and standard gynecologic care. Colposcopic and histologic findings were c

The sensitivity of human papillomavirus (HPV) detection was compared by colposcopy, histology and DNA hybridization among 304 women with abnormal Papanicolaou (Pap) smear. Colposcopically directed biopsies revealed HPV infection in 71% of cases, DNA hybridization in 35%, and both together in 78%. DNA hybridization detected HPV in 24% of the 84 benign cases with no histological signs of HPV, in 32% of the 133 condylomas verified by biopsies and in 51% of the 85 cases with intraepithelial neoplasia, 95% of which presented histological signs of HPV. The pattern of occurrence of different HPV-type
