Effects of different noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation frequencies on postural control responses.

Noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) can improve postural stability by delivering subthreshold electrical noise to the vestibular system. However, the frequency-specific effects of nGVS on postural control responses-particularly those involving the center of mass (COM) recovery force and movement strategies-remain unclear. We investigated how different nGVS frequencies affect postural control, estimating COM fluctuations using a rigid pendulum model. Thirty-two healthy adults (mean age, 20.3 ± 1.2 years; 19 females) underwent three interventions: sham nGVS, low-frequency nGVS (LF-nGVS,

Visual motion does not bias gravity-referenced vestibular coding in the primate cerebellar nodulus and uvula.

Visual motion is known to influence perceptions of tilt, verticality, and translation, suggesting that optic flow is combined with vestibular cues to estimate orientation relative to gravity. The cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula (NU) are a prime candidate to perform this computation because this region uniquely receives convergent semicircular canal, otolith, and proprioceptive inputs, and in non-primate species full-field visual motion robustly modulates NU activity. Here, we tested whether visual roll motion, known to bias perceived orientation relative to gravity, alters the internal gr

Cross-modal predictive oculomotor control: visually acquired prediction transfers to vestibular-driven eye movements.

Predictive motor control enables animals to compensate for sensorimotor delays and perform timely movements in dynamic environments. Although event timing prediction has been widely investigated in visually and auditorily evoked behaviours, its presence in the vestibular-motor system remains unclear. Moreover the extent to which predictive learning generalizes across sensory modalities is poorly understood. Recent studies in goldfish have demonstrated that the optokinetic response (OKR), a visually evoked reflexive eye movement, can transition into a predictive mode (pOKR) following exposure t

Somnomat Care: A Novel Robotic Bed for Vestibular Stimulation in Nursing Homes.

Sleep disorders affect one-third of the general population, with prevalence significantly increasing among the elderly. Rocking beds utilizing vestibular stimulation have shown promise as non-pharmaceutical interventions for improving sleep quality. However, existing designs lack the necessary features for retirement facilities, such as protective handles and reclining backrests, limiting their accessibility for elderly individuals who often experience markedly reduced sleep quality. In this work, we introduce Somnomat Care, an evolution of the long-running Somnomat sleep intervention project.

Efficacy of the silicon based agent for age related decline in vestibular function.

Age-related vertigo and balance disorders can lead to falls, fractures, and prolonged confinement to bed. Loss of mobility and/or social interaction may cause cognitive decline and lower quality of life, resulting in significant social and economic burdens. Aging societies urgently need treatments for vestibular decline, as no cures exist, and current therapies only provide symptomatic relief. Oxidative stress contributes to age-related cochlear balance system damage, making antioxidants a potential treatment. Silicon-based agent (Si-agent) is an excellent antioxidant. When reacting with water

Effects of individually calibrated white and pink noise vestibular stimulation on standing balance of young healthy adults.

Imperceptible noisy galvanic vestibular stimulation (nGVS) improves standing balance due to the presence of stochastic resonance (SR). There is, however, a lack of consensus regarding the optimal levels and type of noise used to elicit SR like dynamics. We aimed to confirm the presence of SR behavior in the vestibular system of young healthy adults by examining postural responses to increasing amplitudes of white and pink noise stimulation scaled to individual cutaneous perceptual threshold. Forty (40) healthy young participants (19 males, 25.1 ± 5.6 years) were randomly divided into a group t

Behavioral and neural responses to high-strength magnetic fields are reduced in otolith mutant mice.

Static high magnetic fields (MFs) interact with the vestibular system of humans and rodents. In rats and mice, exposure to MFs causes perturbations such as head movements, circular locomotion, suppressed rearing, nystagmus, and conditioned taste aversion acquisition. To test the role of otoconia, two mutant mouse models were examined, head-tilt Nox3het (het) and tilted Otop1 (tlt), with mutations, respectively, in Nox3, encoding the NADPH oxidase 3 enzyme, and Otop1, encoding the otopetrin 1 proton channel, which are normally expressed in the otolith organs, and are critical for otoconia forma
