Psychogenic pseudoepileptic seizures: clinical and electroencephalogram (EEG) video-tape recordings.

This paper presents a clinical and electrophysiological analysis of type and duration of seizures recorded by means of long-term video electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring, a method which enables accurate diagnosis of psychogenic pseudoepileptic seizures occurring with or without epileptic seizures. Analysis is based on 1083 patients, hospitalized at our department between 1990 and 1997, with a preliminary diagnosis of epilepsy. Psychogenic pseudoepileptic seizures were diagnosed in 85 patients (7.8%). In 48 patients, pseudoepileptic seizures alone were diagnosed (group 1), whereas 37 patient

A videodensitometric study of transmural heterogeneity of cyclic echo amplitude variation in human myocardium.

The aims of this study were: (1) to assess whether variations in cyclic echo amplitude might be detected across the human myocardium by videodensitometric analysis of images obtained with epicardial echocardiography; and (2) to explore the possible relation between cyclic gray level variation and left ventricular (LV) hypertrophy and function. Experimental studies show that transmural differences in contractile performance across the normal myocardium are paralleled by differences in the cyclic (diastolic-to-systolic) variation of myocardial echo amplitude. Thirty-three patients (aged 60 +/- 1

Postictal language dysfunction in patients with right or bilateral hemispheric language localization.

PURPOSE: As shown previously, when temporal lobe complex partial seizures (TLCPS) originate from the language dominant hemisphere, patients cannot read a test phrase correctly within 60 s of the end of the ictal discharge. We wished to assess whether postictal language testing results discordant with this pattern identified patients with non-left (right hemisphere or mixed) language dominance. METHODS: Since 1988, all patients undergoing video/EEG monitoring at our institution have been given a test phrase to read aloud as soon as a seizure is detected. Inclusion criteria for this study were

Neuropharmacological evaluation of movement disorders that are adverse reactions to specific foods.

Three cases are reported of patients who had episodic movement disorders triggered by foods or components of the diet. In the first patient, the movement consisted of shaking the head from side to side that was triggered by milk and a number of other foods. In the second patient, the movement consisted of a repeated shrugging of the shoulders that was triggered by egg and coffee. In the third, the movement consisted of rhythmic contractions of the arms and legs that were triggered by aspartame. The first patient agreed to participate in a study in which she drank 250 ml of skim milk, an amount

Relationship between lower limb dynamics and knee joint pain.

To test the hypothesis that appropriate and timely neuromuscular control of limb motions plays an important role in the preservation of joint health, we kinematically and kinetically examined the behavior of the legs of young adult subjects at heel strike during natural walking. We compared a group of 18 volunteers, who, we presumed, were preosteoarthrotic because of mild, intermittent, activity-related knee joint pain, with 14 age-matched asymptomatic normal subjects. The two groups of subjects exhibited similar gait patterns with equivalent cadences, walking speeds, terminal stance phase kne

Central vocal cord paralysis and paresis presenting as laryngeal stridor in children.

Vocal cord paralysis or paresis as the initial presenting symptom for intracranial tumors in children are rare. Recently, two pediatric patients who were later diagnosed as having intracranial tumors presented with the symptom of voice changes and stridor. Telescopic examination revealed bilateral vocal cord paresis and paralysis as demonstrated by video recordings. The majority of pediatric brain tumors present with both generalized and localized complaints; however, by discussing these two rare cases, we hope to underscore the importance of a thorough workup of the paralyzed or paretic vocal

Endothelial cell interactions with sickle cell, sickle trait, mechanically injured, and normal erythrocytes under controlled flow.

Increased adhesive forces between sickle erythrocytes and endothelial cells (EC) have been hypothesized to play a role in the initiation of vasoocclusion in sickle cell anemia. Erythrocyte/human umbilical vein EC interactions were studied under controlled flow conditions for normal (AA), homozygous sickle cell (SS), sickle cell trait (AS), mechanically injured normal, and "high-reticulocyte control" RBC by using video microscopy and digital image processing. The number of adherent RBC was determined at ten-minute intervals during a washout period. Results indicate that SS RBC were more adheren

[Fetal echocardiography: structural evaluation of the fetal heart and prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease (author's transl)].

Two-dimensional echocardiography has developed to the routine examination to diagnose congenital heart disease. In this study, we studied the value of two-dimensional echocardiography for evaluating the development of the fetal heart and for prenatal diagnosis of congenital heart disease. We studied 100 fetuses whose gestational ages were 16-40 weeks of pregnancy. The examination was performed with Toshiba Sonolayer-V model SSL-53M. The scanners were the 2.25 MHz linear and sector transducers. The images were recorded on videotapes. Changing the scanner direction according to the fetal positio

Biplanar Videoradiography to Study the Wrist and Distal Radioulnar Joints.

Accurate measurement of skeletal kinematics in vivo is essential for understanding normal joint function, the influence of pathology, disease progression, and the effects of treatments. Measurement systems that use skin surface markers to infer skeletal motion have provided important insight into normal and pathological kinematics, however, accurate arthrokinematics cannot be attained using these systems, especially during dynamic activities. In the past two decades, biplanar videoradiography (BVR) systems have enabled many researchers to directly study the skeletal kinematics of the joints du

Visual attention mechanisms in happiness versus trustworthiness processing of facial expressions.

A happy facial expression makes a person look (more) trustworthy. Do perceptions of happiness and trustworthiness rely on the same face regions and visual attention processes? In an eye-tracking study, eye movements and fixations were recorded while participants judged the un/happiness or the un/trustworthiness of dynamic facial expressions in which the eyes and/or the mouth unfolded from neutral to happy or vice versa. A smiling mouth and happy eyes enhanced perceived happiness and trustworthiness similarly, with a greater contribution of the smile relative to the eyes. This comparable judgem

Sonographic alteration of substantia nigra is related to parkinsonism-predominant course of X-linked dystonia-parkinsonism.

INTRODUCTION: X-linked recessive dystonia-parkinsonism (XDP, DYT3) is highly prevalent in the Philippines and manifests with varying phenotype. We sought to evaluate the significance of transcranial brain sonography as a biomarker for parkinsonism-predominant phenotype. METHODS: 90 Filipino participants were enrolled into a cross-sectional study: 39 patients with XDP, 21 asymptomatic first-degree relatives of XDP patients, and 30 healthy control subjects. Echogenicity of the substantia nigra and the lenticular nuclei was digitally quantified. Brain sonography data were compared with video-bas

Testing the effectiveness of 3D film for laboratory-based studies of emotion.

Research in psychology and affective neuroscience often relies on film as a standardized and reliable method for evoking emotion. However, clip validation is not undertaken regularly. This presents a challenge for research with adolescent and young adult samples who are exposed routinely to high-definition (HD) three-dimensional (3D) stimuli and may not respond to older, validated film clips. Studies with young people inform understanding of emotional development, dysregulated affect, and psychopathology, making it critical to assess whether technological advances improve the study of emotion.

Video prompting versus other instruction strategies for persons with Alzheimer's disease.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Two studies assessed the effectiveness of video prompting as a strategy to support persons with mild and moderate Alzheimer's disease in performing daily activities. METHODS: In study I, video prompting was compared to an existing strategy relying on verbal instructions. In study II, video prompting was compared to another existing strategy relying on static pictorial cues. Video prompting and the other strategies were counterbalanced across tasks and participants and compared within alternating treatments designs. RESULTS: Video prompting was effective in all participants. S

Modulation of epileptiform EEG discharges in juvenile myoclonic epilepsy: an investigation of reflex epileptic traits.

PURPOSE: Previous studies have suggested that cognitive tasks modulate (provoke or inhibit) the epileptiform electroencephalography (EEG) discharges (EDs) in patients with juvenile myoclonic epilepsy (JME). Their inhibitory effect was found to be especially frequent (64-90%). These studies arbitrarily defined modulation as a >100% increase or >50% decrease of the EDs compared with baseline, which may not sufficiently distinguish from spontaneous fluctuations. The aim of our study was to assess the modulation of EDs and the precipitation of myoclonic seizures by cognitive tasks and by conventio

Decoding of emotion through facial expression, prosody and verbal content in children and adolescents with Asperger's syndrome.

This study examined differences in the ability to decode emotion through facial expression, prosody, and verbal content between 14 children with Asperger's Syndrome (AS) and 16 typically developing peers. The ability to decode emotion was measured by the Perception of Emotion Test (POET), which portrayed the emotions of happy, angry, sad, and neutral among the modalities of static and dynamic facial expression, prosody, verbal content, and all modalities combined. Results revealed that children with AS had more difficulty identifying emotions through static facial expression, dynamic facial ex
