DATA SOURCES: Demographic data were collected from a convenience sample of 101 Central American mothers with a teenage daughter ages 12-17 years who were living in Northern Virginia. BACKGROUND: In order to improve management, the files and tissue sections of 28 cases of malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNST) diagnosed at the University of Virginia Health Sciences Center between 1960 and 1990 were reviewed.

A survey of 220 adolescents attending a multiphysician pediatric office in Virginia was conducted to determine the frequency with which they used sunscreens. Eighty-one percent of the teenagers in the study stated that they spent most weekends in the sun; however, only 9% always used sunscreen, while 33% never did. The outcome for the first 57 successive patients who underwent total perineal prostatectomy for clinically localized prostate cancer at the Virginia Mason Clinic and who have been followed up for a minimum of 15 years is reviewed for evaluation of the long-term impact of this operation on the disease.
