Song system neuroanatomy, and immediate early gene expression in a finch species with extensive male and female song.

Birdsong is a relatively well-studied behavior, both due to its importance as a model for vocal production learning and as an intriguing complex social behavior. Until the last few decades, work on birdsong focused almost exclusively on males. However, it is now widely accepted that female song not only exists, but is fairly common throughout the oscine passerines. Despite this, and the large number of researchers who have begun exploring female song in the field, researchers in the lab have been slow to adopt model species with female song. Studying female song in the lab is critical for our

Forty-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations of rat pups predict adult behavior in the elevated plus-maze behavior but not the effect of cocaine on 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalizations.

Ultrasonic vocalizations (USV) are emitted by both young pups and adult rats to convey positive or negative emotional states. These USV manifestations are contingent on factors including developmental stage, situational requirements, and individual dispositions. Pups emit 40-kHz USV when separated from their mother and litter, which function to elicit maternal care. Conversely, adult rats can produce 50-kHz USV in response to stimuli that elicit reward-related states, including natural rewards, stimulant drugs, and reward-predictive stimuli. The present study aims to investigate whether pup 40

Cortical representation of group social communication in bats.

Social interactions occur in group settings and are mediated by communication signals that are exchanged between individuals, often using vocalizations. The neural representation of group social communication remains largely unexplored. We conducted simultaneous wireless electrophysiological recordings from the frontal cortices of groups of Egyptian fruit bats engaged in both spontaneous and task-induced vocal interactions. We found that the activity of single neurons distinguished between vocalizations produced by self and by others, as well as among specific individuals. Coordinated neural a

Middle age, a key time point for changes in birdsong and human voice.

Voice changes caused by natural aging and neurodegenerative diseases are prevalent in the aging population and diminish quality of life. Most treatments involve behavioral interventions that target the larynx because of a limited understanding of central brain mechanisms. The songbird offers a unique entry point into studying age-related changes in vocalizations because of a well-characterized neural circuitry for song that shares homology to human vocal control areas. Previously we established a translational dictionary for evaluating acoustic features of birdsong in the context of human voic

Behavioral thermoregulation in avian embryos: Spectrum analysis of calls in warm and cold conditions.

During the last days of incubation vocalization is a form of communication between the avian embryo and the incubating parent. Commonly, embryonic calls increase when ambient temperature (Ta) deviates from the optimal range, but no information is available on whether the characteristics of the calls differ between warming and cooling. Rate of calls, power spectra (distribution of the call's energy among its frequency components) and spectrograms (time-frequency plots) were obtained in chicken embryos during the external pipping phase, in normothermia (38 °C), during progressive cooling to Ta =

Influence of glottal closure on the phonatory process in ex vivo porcine larynges.

Many cases of disturbed voice signals can be attributed to incomplete glottal closure, vocal fold oscillation asymmetries, and aperiodicity. Often these phenomena occur simultaneously and interact with each other, making a systematic, isolated investigation challenging. Therefore, ex vivo porcine experiments were performed which enable direct control of glottal configurations. Different pre-phonatory glottal gap sizes, adduction levels, and flow rates were adjusted. The resulting glottal closure types were identified in a post-processing step. Finally, the acoustic quality, aerodynamic paramet

Copulatory courtship song in Lutzomyia migonei (Diptera: psychodidae).

Lutzomyia migonei is a vector of leishmaniasis with a wide distribution in South America, which could favour population differentiation and speciation. Cryptic species of the Lutzomyia longipalpis complex, the widely distributed sand fly vector of visceral leishmaniasis in Latin America, have previously been shown to display distinct copulation songs. We found that Lu. migonei males also produce a song during copulation. This "lovesong" presents short trains (6-8 pulses) with an inter-pulse interval around 26 ms and is potentially involved in cryptic female choice and insemination success.

Central contributions to acoustic variation in birdsong.

Birdsong is a learned behavior remarkable for its high degree of stereotypy. Nevertheless, adult birds display substantial rendition-by-rendition variation in the structure of individual song elements or "syllables." Previous work suggests that some of this variation is actively generated by the avian basal ganglia circuitry for purposes of motor exploration. However, it is unknown whether and how natural variations in premotor activity drive variations in syllable structure. Here, we recorded from the premotor nucleus robust nucleus of the arcopallium (RA) in Bengalese finches and measured wh

Freedom and rules: the acquisition and reprogramming of a bird's learned song.

Canary song is hierarchically structured: Short stereotyped syllables are repeated to form phrases, which in turn are arranged to form songs. This structure occurs even in the songs of young isolates, which suggests that innate rules govern canary song development. However, juveniles that had never heard normal song imitated abnormal synthetic songs with great accuracy, even when the tutor songs lacked phrasing. As the birds matured, imitated songs were reprogrammed to form typical canary phrasing. Thus, imitation and innate song constraints are separate processes that can be segregated in tim

Electronic analysis of intrinsic laryngeal muscles in canine sound production.

This study explores the relationship between voice production and intrinsic laryngeal muscle (ILM) activities as expressed by orderly recruitment of their specific motor units. In 5 dogs, both the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) and the vagus nerve (cranial nerve X) were stimulated via tripolar electrodes with stimulating frequencies (Fs) of 10 to 60 Hz and 0 to 7 mA during application of symmetric 600 Hz, 7 to 0 mA blocking currents. The fundamental frequency (Fo) and the intensity (I) of sounds generated by tracheal insufflation of humidified air were recorded while electromyograms of the cr

Local intracerebral implants of estrogen masculinize some aspects of the zebra finch song system.

The song system of zebra finches is sexually dimorphic: the volumes of the song control nuclei and the neurons within these nuclei are larger in males. The song system of hatchling female zebra finches is masculinized by systemic treatment with estrogen. We investigated the locus of this estrogen action by using microimplants of estradiol benzoate (EB). We implanted female zebra finch nestlings 10-13 days old with Silastic pellets containing approximately 2 micrograms EB at one of several sites: near the higher vocal center (HVC), in the brain distant from HVC, or in the periphery either under

Distribution of choline acetyltransferase and acetylcholinesterase in the vocal motor system of zebra finches.

The distribution of choline acetyltransferase immunoreactivity (ChAT-IR) was surveyed in the vocal motor system of adult male and female zebra finches and was compared with the pattern of histochemical acetylcholinesterase (AChE-His). In the vocal motor system the most prominent accumulation of ChAT-IR somata was found in lobus parolfactorius (LPO) including Area X. Immunoreactive neuropil was found to be concentrated in pericellular networks of fibers in male's Area X while the corresponding area in females could not be demarcated within the LPO. The density of ChAT-IR fiber networks was much

Laryngeal reflex apnea in the chemodenervated newborn piglet.

Effects of peripheral arterial chemodernervation on laryngeal reflex-induced apnea were studied in 18 piglets of either sex varying in age from 4 to 63 days. The distal trachea was cannulated with a cuffed endotracheal tube to secure a free airway and permit ventilatory measurements with a pneumotachograph. The proximal trachea was used to introduce fluids into the larynx. Water elicited apnea, bradycardia, and arterial hypertension, whereas saline caused only transient disturbances. Electrical stimulation of the superior laryngeal nerves reproduced, and conduction anesthesia ablated, the effe

Effects of exposure to plant-derived odorants on behavior and the concentration of stress-related hormones in steers isolated under a novel environment.

This study was conducted to investigate physiological and behavioral effects of the exposure to plant-derived odorants in Holstein steers (8 month of age) under the acute stress of social isolation in a novel environment. Each steer was tethered in a new room alone and exposed to one of three odorants: a mixture of equal amounts of trans-2-hexenal and cis-3-hexenol (green odor, GO; n = 5), essential oil of grapefruits (EOG; n = 5) and solvent (SOL; n = 6). Behaviors were recorded and blood samples were taken at intervals of 10-15 min for 6 h. Compared with SOL, exposure to GO or EOG decreased

Behavioural and cardiac responses towards conspecific distress calls in domestic pigs (Sus scrofa).

In domestic pigs, vocalisation can be an indicator of distress and negative emotional states. It might play a role in the transfer of emotion between individuals ('emotional contagion' or 'empathy'), which could result in impaired animal welfare on a group level based on the distress in an individual member of the group. The aim of this study was to characterise the responses of pigs to conspecific distress calls. We performed a playback experiment in an open arena with 24 juvenile German Landrace pigs, during which individual subjects were exposed to both conspecific distress calls and an art

[Euthanasia of cattle: a clinical comparison of T 61 and pentobarbital (Eutha 77)].

The objective of this study was a comparison of pentobarbital and T 61 in the euthanasia of cattle. 397 cattle of different ages and breeds which had to be euthanised in the Clinic for Ruminants were enrolled. Following clinical examination, euthanasia was performed by intravenous injection of either 40 mg pentobarbital per kg body weight (BW) (0.1 ml Eutha 77) or 0.1 ml T 61/kg BW. The intervals between the beginning of injection and the following events were noted: collapse of the animal, cessation of respiration, cessation of cardiac action, disappearance of the palpebral and corneal reflex

Characterizing glottal jet turbulence.

Air pressure associated with airflow from the lungs drives the vocal folds into oscillation and allows the air to exit the glottis as a turbulent jet, even though laminar flow may enter the glottis from the trachea. The separation of the turbulence from the deterministic portion of the glottal jet was investigated in the excised canine larynx model. The present study is methodological in that the main goal was to examine three methods of obtaining reasonable representations of both the deterministic signal and the residual turbulence portion: (a) smoothing, (b) wavelet denoising, and (c) ensem

The spatial context of free-ranging Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) producing acoustic signals.

To improve our understanding of how dolphins use acoustic signals in the wild, a three-hydrophone towed array was used to investigate the spatial occurrence of Hawaiian spinner dolphins (Stenella longirostris) relative to each other as they produced whistles, burst pulses, and echolocation clicks. Groups of approximately 30 to 60 animals were recorded while they traveled and socialized in nearshore waters off Oahu, Hawaii. Signaling animals were localized using time of arrival difference cues on the three channels. Sequences of whistles occurred between dolphins separated by significantly grea

Extinction of the acoustic startle response in moths endemic to a bat-free habitat.

Most moths use ears solely to detect the echolocation calls of hunting, insectivorous bats and evoke evasive flight manoeuvres. This singularity of purpose predicts that this sensoribehavioural network will regress if the selective force that originally maintained it is removed. We tested this with noctuid moths from the islands of Tahiti and Moorea, sites where bats have never existed and where an earlier study demonstrated that the ears of endemic species resemble those of adventives although partially reduced in sensitivity. To determine if these moths still express the anti-bat defensive b
