Review of EEG-based pattern classification frameworks for dyslexia.

Dyslexia is a disability that causes difficulties in reading and writing despite average intelligence. This hidden disability often goes undetected since dyslexics are normal and healthy in every other way. Electroencephalography (EEG) is one of the upcoming methods being researched for identifying unique brain activation patterns in dyslexics. The aims of this paper are to examine pros and cons of existing EEG-based pattern classification frameworks for dyslexia and recommend optimisations through the findings to assist future research. A critical analysis of the literature is conducted focus…

Is there a distinct form of developmental dyslexia in children with specific language impairment? Findings from an orthographically regular language.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to identify quantitative and qualitative differences between the reading and writing skills of children with developmental dyslexia and those of dyslexic children with a specific language impairment (SLI). BACKGROUND: It is suggested that although the etiology of developmental dyslexia and SLI may be diverse, dyslexic children with SLI and their language-intact peers are comparable on a behavioral level. METHODS: Three groups of second-grade children were compared on reading and writing tests with single words and nonwords: 15 dyslexic children with a hi…

Acquired alexia with agraphia syndrome in childhood.

The acquired alexia with agraphia syndrome is a conspicuous disorder of reading and writing in the absence of significant other language impairments that has mainly been recorded in adults. Pure cases are rare, with most patients displaying mild aphasic deficits. In children, acquired reading and writing disorders are generally reported as part of more encompassing aphasic syndromes affecting oral and written language equally, for example, Broca or Wernicke aphasia. Documented instances of predominant acquired reading and writing disorders in childhood are exceptional. We report an 11-year-old…

Evaluating factors that can influence spirography ratings in patients with essential tremor.

Spirograph drawings are used in most comprehensive assessments of essential tremor (ET). Nevertheless, several different paradigms are used and no effort has been made to compare these. We used two different cohorts to assess different aspects of spiral rating. In the first, we had subjects simulate different levels of effort by writing (1) 'normally', (2) 'slowly and carefully', (3) 'softly', and (4) 'rapidly' using both their dominant and non-dominant hands. In the second, subjects (1) drew in between the lines of two drawn spirals, (2) traced a previously drawn spirograph, and (3) drew free…

It is mostly … which students are required to be biliterate or triliterate, further increasing the constraints on writing. [Psychodynamics of psychovegetative disorders].

Based on quotations from Freuds writings on the actual neurosis and quotations from Schultz-Henckes writings on neurasthenia and nervousness, the psychodynamics of psychovegetative disturbances are demonstrated through an examplatory case. In a first attempt the symptoms are categorized, a classification is proposed, and the differential diagnosis is reflected. Next a report is given about the special defence-mechanism known as repression, the highly strained ego-ideal, and the importance of the triggering situation in relation to the etiology. Psychodynamic hypothese about psychovegetative di…

Embedding visual and performing arts into health professional education - a scoping review and conceptual framework.

AIM: Public health professionals need evidence-based education to equip them with sufficient knowledge to recommend creative community programmes and arts therapies. The current review asks 'What is known about how visual arts, performing arts, and creative writing are embedded in health and medical education?'. METHOD: A search across six different databases (CINAHL, ERIC, Medline, AMED, ProQuest Dissertations, and Web of Science) identified 6090 articles, and 284 were included. The core search terms were (1) Visual arts; performance arts and creative writing, (2) Tertiary education and heal…

Disparate Oral and Written Language Abilities in Adolescents With Cochlear Implants: Evidence From Narrative Samples.

PURPOSE: In spite of improvements in language outcomes for children with hearing loss (HL) arising from cochlear implants (CIs), these children can falter when it comes to academic achievement, especially in higher grades. Given that writing becomes increasingly relevant to educational pursuits as children progress through school, this study explored the hypothesis that one challenge facing students with CIs may be written language. METHOD: Participants were 98 eighth graders: 52 with normal hearing (NH) and 46 with severe-to-profound HL who used CIs. Oral and written narratives were elicited…

Characteristics of Task-specific Tremor in String Instrument Players.

BACKGROUND: In recent studies primary bowing tremor has been described; however, tremor frequency has never been quantitatively assessed. In addition to describing phenomenological aspects of tremor we thus aimed at assessing tremor frequency. Our hypothesis was that primary bowing tremor is similar to the phenomenological aspects and frequency of primary writing tremor. METHODS: WE QUANTIFIED PRIMARY BOWING TREMOR IN FOUR VIOLINISTS UNDER TWO CONDITIONS: open strings and a G major scale. Data were analyzed using empirical mode decomposition because it takes into account non-stationarity and …

Beyond Spelling: Oral and Written Expository Discourse Skills in Adolescents With Dyslexia.

Students with dyslexia may produce shorter written texts with poorer content and less complex language than peers, but it remains unclear whether such differences reflect increased writing effort associated with dyslexia or co-occurring non-phonological language difficulties. Therefore, this study compared oral and written discourse skills in Swedish adolescents (11-16 years old) with dyslexia (n = 16) and typical development (n = 37). Each participant explained a sport or game of their choice-first orally and, on a later occasion, in writing. Samples were analysed for productivity, syntactic …

Choosing Words to Limit Stigma: The Use of Person-First Language in Birth Defects Research.

BACKGROUND: Birth defects are associated with psychosocial stress and stigma, in addition to increased mortality and lifelong disabilities. The language and phrasing used to describe individuals with birth defects in scientific writing can affect attitudes that contribute to stigma. Using a "person-first" writing structure (e.g., "infants with Down syndrome") instead of "identity-first" language (e.g., "Down syndrome infants") is intended to promote respect and inclusivity. Our work aims to enhance awareness and advocacy of person-first language among researchers and professionals in birth def…

Is phonological deficit a necessary or sufficient condition for Chinese reading disability?

While phonological skills have been found to be correlated with reading across different writing systems, recent findings have shown that developmental dyslexia in Chinese individuals has multiple deficits, and no single factor has ever been identified as crucial for learning this writing system. To examine whether a deficit in the phonological or another cognitive domain is a necessary or sufficient condition for Chinese reading disability, this study examined the cognitive profiles of 521 good readers and 502 dyslexic readers in Chinese primary schools using a battery of behavioral measures …

Long-term benefits after a rhyme-repetition based intervention program for kindergarteners: Better reading and spelling in the first grade.

Oral language proficiency in kindergarten can facilitate the acquisition of reading and writing. However, in diglossic languages, like Arabic, the large gap between the spoken and the formal, modern standard (MSA) varieties of the language may restrict the benefits of oral language proficiency to subsequent literacy skills. Here, we tested, in a randomized controlled study, whether an intervention program, implemented in kindergarten, that familiarized the children with rhymes presented in MSA through recitation, facilitated reading and spelling in first grade. We also tested whether engaging …

Elementary Grade Intervention Approaches to Treat Specific Learning Disabilities, Including Dyslexia.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this narrative review of the literature is to provide a description of intensive interventions for elementary grade students with dyslexia, students with learning disabilities, and students with intensive reading and writing needs. METHOD: First, we provide a brief overview of response to intervention. Second, we explain our theoretical framework for the review. Third, we describe evidence-based interventions, which are divided into predominantly reading or writing interventions. Fourth, we explain data-based individualization for these programs based on a taxonomy of …

Neurology and psychiatry in Babylon.

We here review Babylonian descriptions of neurological and psychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, stroke, psychoses, obsessive compulsive disorder, phobias, psychopathic behaviour, depression and anxiety. Most of these accounts date from the first Babylonian dynasty of the first half of the second millennium BC, within a millennium and a half of the origin of writing. The Babylonians were remarkably acute and objective observers of medical disorders and human behaviour. Their detailed descriptions are surprisingly similar to modern 19th and 20th century AD textbook accounts, with the excep…

[Neuropsychiatry in Machado de Assis].

Regarded as one of the best Brazilian writers, Machado de Assis was diagnosed with epilepsy since childhood. In his vast work, some of the main pieces are rich in describing neuropsychiatric disorders, including epilepsy, depression, dementia (most likely related to neurosyphilis), acute confusional state (delirium), dysthymia and motor tics. An anti-psychiatric bias is clearly noticed in his approach to mental illness-related themes.
