Background/Objectives: Infective endocarditis (IE) remains a rare but increasingly complex condition, posing significant challenges for cardiologists and cardiac surgeons. Blood groups from the ABO/Rh system have been associated with susceptibility to various diseases, including infections and bacterial colonization tendencies. However, data on the distribution of ABO/Rh blood types among IE patients are lacking. We hypothesized that the prevalence of ABO/Rh blood types among IE patients differs from their frequency in the general population. This study aimed to assess the distribution of ABO/

BACKGROUND: Tick bites may expose individuals to a carbohydrate not found in humans, galactose-alpha-1,3-galactose (alpha-gal). A spectrum of disorders may result from IgE-mediated hypersensitivity reactions to alpha-gal, including alpha-gal syndrome (AGS), an allergy to meat or meat-derived products usually presenting 2-6 h after consuming the product plus positive alpha-gal specific IgE testing for the oligosaccharide. Reports of anaphylaxis in group O recipients of group B plasma in the absence of other risk factors for severe allergic reactions to blood transfusion could be alpha-gal sensi

Blood group O is associated with protection against severe malaria and reduced size and stability of P. falciparum-host red blood cell (RBC) rosettes compared to non-O blood groups. Whether the non-O blood groups encoded by the specific ABO genotypes AO, BO, AA, BB and AB differ in their associations with severe malaria and rosetting is unknown. The A and B antigens are host RBC receptors for rosetting, hence we hypothesized that the higher levels of A and/or B antigen on RBCs from AA, BB and AB genotypes compared to AO/BO genotypes could lead to larger rosettes, increased microvascular obstru

OBJECTIVE: To explore the relationship between the serological detection of neonatal hemolytic disease (HDN) and related factors, and to observe the detection rate and specificity of the antibodies against the blood group in the newborn hemolytic disease.
METHODS: Maternal-neonatal blood type was detected firstly, and then the direct antiglobulin test(DAT), the free antibody test and the antibody release test were used to detect the occurrence of HDN; For those suspected hemolytic disease except ABO or direct DAT result over 2+, the indirect antiglobulin test with irregular antibody were used

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) is an established treatment for various neuromuscular disorders. Recently, cases of hemolytic anemia following IVIG have been observed. The objective of this study was to determine the extent of anemia and hemolysis after IVIG and its relationship to the AB0 blood type system.
METHODS: In a prospective study 34 de novo treated patients were given 2.0 g/kg bodyweight of Privigen and 50 patients received either Privigen [n = 28; 1.53 ± 0.4 g/kg (mean ± SD)] or Kiovig (n = 22; 1.7 ± 0.4 g/kg) as maintenance therapy. The de novo

BACKGROUND: The pool of suitable donors and listed recipients for intestinal transplantation is small, resulting in difficulties in donor-to-recipient matching and significant mortality on the waiting list. This study aims to help define the pool of potential donors for intestinal transplantation and propose methods for an increased utilization of donor bowels in the United Kingdom.
METHODS: Data on bowel offering from 657 donors after brain stem death (DBD) and on 46 patients on the active intestinal transplant list over 12 months from 14 April 2011 were obtained from the UK Transplant Regis

PURPOSE: Only epithelial cells are thought to express blood group antigens (bga) A and/or B in normal corneas, and ABO blood group (bg) matching seems to reduce immune rejection in high risk transplantations. This study attempts for the first time to investigate to what extent the bga A and/or B are expressed in diseased corneas.
METHODS: Thirty-nine diseased corneal buttons of 39 patients were examined. Immunohistochemical staining of paraffin-embedded sections was performed with monoclonal mouse anti human blood groups A and B antibodies using the Streptavidin-Biotin-peroxidase complex tech

The distribution of blood group antigens ABH in submandibular glands was studied at light and electron microscopy levels by applying ImmunoGold Silver Staining (IGSS) and post-embedding ImmunoGold (IGS) methods, respectively. In IGSS treated samples, a cytoplasmic and a surface form of antigen localization were discernible in the glandular parenchyma. The former was restricted to most mucous cells and to scattered serous cells: A and B antigens were demonstrated in mucous cells of A and B type glands, while H antigen appeared in most mucous and occasional serous elements regardless of the bloo

Idiopathic hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (IHH) is a well-known disorder apart from its pathogenesis, which is still mostly unclear, even though a diverse subgroup of patients with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism and hyposmia/anosmia--the Kallman syndrome--have been partly linked to a mutated gene, known as kal-1 gene. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the sellar region of patients with IHH on magnetic resonance (MR). Pituitary MR of 120 male patients with IHH, diagnosed by a thorough endocrinologic assessment, were compared with pituitary MR of 49 healthy cases selected randomly who underwent

A patient with chronic idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP), a 28-year-old group A, Rh-positive woman, also had hemolytic anemia. At that time, her red cells typed as group A, but the serum typed as group O. This typing followed intravenous high-dose immune globulin therapy, (400 mg/kg for 5 successive days) and was attributable to A antibody of the IgG type, composed of IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, and IgG4, in the immune globulin preparation, which had been given for treatment of ITP. All lots of commercial human plasma preparation products (heat-treated human plasma protein, albumin, factor VIII

The postulated role of infectious agents, genetic susceptibility of the host to infection and their interaction in the pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis, other spondyloarthropathies, and the associated primary (non-arthritic) diseases are reviewed. Compared with a local control population there is a significantly increased prevalence of non-secretors amongst different groups of patients with spondyloarthropathy: ankylosing spondylitis, reactive arthritis and psoriatic arthropathy. No differences between secretor and non-secretor patients with respect to serum and salivary IgA levels, the

The relation between ABO blood group, mating patterns of patient/husband blood group, and the risk of gestational trophoblastic disease was investigated in a case-control study conducted in Milan on 286 women with histologically confirmed trophoblastic disease (245 benign hydatidiform moles and 41 persistent trophoblastic disease) and 433 control subjects admitted for normal delivery to the same hospitals where cases had been identified. ABO blood groups were associated with the risk of gestational trophoblastic disease (chi 2(6) for heterogeneity = 14.46, p = 0.02). Compared to women of group

The ABO blood-group distributions of 1460 patients who had died from a stroke were compared with those of a control group of 20 705 controls selected at random from the healthy population at risk (i.e., over thirty-five years of age and matched for age and sex ratio). The cause of death was certified as cerebral thrombosis in 329 cases and as cerebral haemorrhage in 482 cases, these diagnoses being established in neurological hospitals; the remaining 649 cases had an unspecified type of stroke, the diagnosis being made by general practitioners. In the group with unspecified type of stroke the

BACKGROUND: Universal plasma is a scarce resource when a massive transfusion protocol has been initiated. Previous studies have reported success using group A plasma in place of the universal plasma, group AB. It is unclear why there are not more reports of hemolytic reactions occurring from this practice. One possible explanation is the presence of water-soluble antigens in the patient plasma that bind to, and neutralize, the soluble antibodies present in the transfused plasma.
STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Expired units of plasma were used to make dilutions that consisted of mixtures of group A
