Association of bone mineral density with trichlorophenol: a population-based study.

BACKGROUND: Trichlorophenols (TCPs) are metabolites of several organochlorine chemicals, including chlorobenzene, hexachlorocyclohexane, and chlorophenoxy acid, present in air, surface water, soil, and sediment. Many studies have shown that endocrine disruptors (EDs)may contribute to decreased bone mass and the increased risk of osteoporosis. However, the relationship between TCP and bone mineral density (BMD) has not been studied yet. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study by using data from the 2005-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). TCP levels were measu

Revision of the 1994 World Health Organization T-score definition of osteoporosis for use in older East Asian women and men to reconcile it with their lifetime risk of fragility fracture.

The 1994 WHO criterion of a T-score ≤ -2.5 for densitometric osteoporosis was chosen because it results in a prevalence commensurate with the observed lifetime risk of fragility fractures in Caucasian women aged ≥ 50 years. Due to the much lower risk of fragility fracture among East Asians, the application of the conventional WHO criterion to East Asians leads to an over inflated prevalence of osteoporosis, particularly for spine osteoporosis. According to statistical modeling and when a local BMD reference is used, we tentatively recommend the cutpoint values for T-score of femoral neck, tota

Body fat differences among US youth aged 8-19 by race and Hispanic origin, 2011-2018.

BACKGROUND: The association between body mass index (BMI) and adiposity differs by race/ethnicity. OBJECTIVE: To examine differences in adiposity by race/Hispanic origin among US youth and explore how those differences relate to differences in BMI using the most recent national data, including non-Hispanic Asian youth. METHODS: Weight, height and DXA-derived fat mass index (FMI) and percentage body fat (%BF) from 6923 youth 8-19 years in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018 were examined. Age-adjusted mean BMI, FMI and %BF were reported. Sex-specific linear

Lower bone density and microarchitecture alterations in HIV-infected Brazilian men aged 50 years and older are associated with estradiol levels.

OBJECTIVE: Combination antiretroviral treatment (cART) allows for longer survival for people living with HIV and hence long-term complications of both disease and treatment are common. Our purpose was to evaluate bone alterations in men living with HIV (MLWH) and receiving cART and to identify associated factors that can be corrected or mitigated. PATIENTS AND DESIGN: Thirty MLWH and 36 healthy controls (≥50 years) were studied for areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD) and bone microstructure (high-res

Low energy availability surrogates associated with lower bone mineral density and bone stress injury site.

BACKGROUND: Exercise is an osteogenic stimulus that should increase bone mineral density (BMD) and protect against injury. However, some female athletes have lower BMD and increased bone stress injury (BSI) risk. Impaired bone health seen in athletes may be explained by low energy availability as described by concepts of Relative Energy Deficiency in Sport (RED-S) and Female Athlete Triad (Triad). OBJECTIVE: To elucidate the relationship between RED-S/Triad risk factors and BSI to high-risk (femoral neck, sacrum) and low-risk (other) bones. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey and retrospective ch

Association of possible sarcopenic obesity with osteoporosis and fragility fractures in postmenopausal women.

UNLABELLED: Possible sarcopenic obese women had a decreased likelihood of osteoporosis but an increased likelihood of fragility fractures compared with non-sarcopenic non-obese and sarcopenia-only women. Furthermore, possible sarcopenic obese women had lower values of trabecular bone score than non-sarcopenic non-obese and sarcopenia-only women. PURPOSE: The coexistence of possible sarcopenia and obesity may have opposing effects on osteoporosis. This study aimed to investigate whether possible sarcopenic obesity is associated with osteoporosis or fragility fracture. METHODS: In this cross-s

Histologic Severity of Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Associates with Reduced Bone Mineral Density in Children.

BACKGROUND: Lower whole body bone mineral density (BMD) has been reported in children with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), but potential mediators remain uncertain. AIMS: To assess BMD at multiple skeletal sites in children with confirmed NAFLD and controls with obesity, adjusting for known determinants of BMD, and examine potential mediators. METHODS: We assessed age-, sex-, and race-specific, and height-adjusted BMD z-scores of whole body, lumbar spine, hip, femoral neck and forearm by dual-energy-x-ray absorptiometry in 79 children, 8-19 years old: 46 with biopsy-confirmed NAFLD

Creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio as a marker of sarcopenia for identifying osteoporosis in male patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is associated with the increased incidence rate of sarcopenia and osteoporosis. Serum creatinine-to-cystatin C ratio (CCR) is a novel and simple tool which can be used as an index of sarcopenia. This study aims to investigate the association between CCR and osteoporosis as well as bone mineral density (BMD) in T2DM patients. METHODS: Four hundred eighteen T2DM patients were recruited, including 166 females and 252 males. General information, BMD data and laboratory data were collected. The correlation between CCR, BMD, bone metabolism markers and os

Physiologic Transdermal Estradiol Replacement Mimics Effects of Endogenous Estrogen on Bone Outcomes in Hypoestrogenic Women with Anorexia Nervosa.

Background: While physiologic estrogen replacement results in increases in areal bone mineral density (aBMD) in hypoestrogenic adolescent girls and young adult women with AN, data are lacking regarding its impact on measures of volumetric BMD (vBMD), bone geometry, and structure. Methods: 23 young women with anorexia nervosa (AN) and 27 normal-weight healthy controls (HC) between 14−25 years old were followed for 12 months. AN participants received transdermal 17β-estradiol (continuously) with 10 days of cyclic oral progesterone (100 mg daily) every month for the study duration (AN-E+). DXA wa

Machine learning applied to HR-pQCT images improves fracture discrimination provided by DXA and clinical risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Traditional analysis of High Resolution peripheral Quantitative Computed Tomography (HR-pQCT) images results in a multitude of cortical and trabecular parameters which would be potentially cumbersome to interpret for clinicians compared to user-friendly tools utilising clinical parameters. A computer vision approach (by which the entire scan is 'read' by a computer algorithm) to ascertain fracture risk, would be far simpler. We therefore investigated whether a computer vision and machine learning technique could improve upon selected clinical parameters in assessing fracture risk.

Bone characteristics of autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets patients.

OBJECTIVE: Autosomal dominant hypophosphatemic rickets (ADHR) is a rare disease caused by activating mutations in fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) gene. With FGF23 activation, ADHR is a good model to explore the effects of FGF23 on skeletal development and mineralization. However, the bone microarchitecture of ADHR patients is poorly investigated. This study aims to illustrate the bone properties of ADHR patients and clarify the effect of FGF23 on load bearing and non-load bearing bone. METHODS: Bone microarchitectures of 11 ADHR subjects and sex- and age-matched healthy controls were anal

Change in appendicular lean mass in patients established on peritoneal dialysis as measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) scanning.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients are at increased risk of malnutrition and cachexia, definitions of which include weight loss. However, PD patients can absorb glucose from the dialysate and loss of muscle mass may be overlooked by fat weight gain. As such, we wished to review changes in body composition in prevalent PD patients. SUBJECTS/METHODS: We compared changes in body composition measured by dual x-ray absorptiometry (DXA) in adult PD patients, and calculated glucose absorption based on 24-h collections of PD dialysate. RESULTS: Overall, 73 prevalent PD patients

Bone densitometry measurements in children with neurofibromatosis Type 1 using quantitative computed tomography.

INTRODUCTION: Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is an autosomal dominant neurocutaneous disease characterised by multisystemic involvement, including bone tissue. Deformities and reduced bone mass are the main bone manifestations in NF1. Quantitative computed tomography (QCT) provides true volumetric bone mineral density (BMD) measurement. This study aimed to evaluate bone metabolism parameters and BMD in children with NF1 using QCT. METHODS: The data of 52 paediatric NF1 patients (23 female, 29 male) was evaluated retrospectively. We investigated anthropometric measurements, biochemical paramet
