Pediatric Glue-Related Injuries in U.S. Emergency Departments: A 10-Year Overview.

Slime's increasing popularity has caused children to be more frequently exposed to glue. There is no comprehensive literature describing pediatric glue-related injuries. This study's purpose is to characterize pediatric glue-related injuries presented to U.S. emergency departments (EDs). We queried the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System for pediatric glue-related injuries from 2009 to 2018. Data were abstracted from discrete and case narrative data. Odds ratios were calculated to determine age-related differences in injuries. An estimated 18,126 pediatric patients were treated in U

Compartment syndrome secondary to intra-operative IV methylene blue extravasation to detect ureteral injury.

Compartment syndrome of the extremities is a rare but potentially devastating condition. We herein report a case of a 53-year old female with an unusual case of hand compartment syndrome and fasciitis secondary to methylene blue (MB) extravasation to detect urinary tract injury intraoperatively. This was recognized immediately and fasciotomy was performed. Features of this case are discussed together with its implications. Despite MB's long history of use, few adverse events of an accidental extravasation have been reported.

Methanol and ethylene glycol intoxication.

Accidental or intentional ingestion of substances containing methanol and ethylene glycol can result in death, and some survivors are left with blindness, renal dysfunction, and chronic brain injury. However, even in large ingestions, a favorable outcome is possible if the patient arrives at the hospital early enough and the poisoning is identified and appropriately treated in a timely manner. This review covers the common circumstances of exposure, the involved toxic mechanisms, and the clinical manifestations, laboratory findings, and treatment of methanol and ethylene glycol intoxication.

Unsuspected systemic Epstein-Barr virus-positive T-cell lymphoma of childhood diagnosed at autopsy in a potential homicide case.

Systemic Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-positive T-cell lymphoma of childhood (SETLC) is a rare, rapidly progressive, and often fatal disease of children and young adults characterized by monoclonal expansion of EBV-positive T cells in tissues or peripheral blood following infection with EBV. Its distinction from other EBV-positive T-cell lymphoproliferative disorders with overlapping features can be difficult, and particular diagnostic features may not be manifest until autopsy examination. We present the case of a 10-year-old boy with significant disability due to remote traumatic brain injury fol

Spearfishing accident leading to pancreatic trauma: an unusual transfixing abdominal injury.

INTRODUCTION: Pancreatic injuries are rare and often difficult to diagnose, especially when caused by unusual penetrating mechanisms. Spear gun trauma is exceptionally uncommon, with very few cases reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 20-year-old man sustained an accidental spear gun injury to the left iliac fossa during spearfishing. He was hemodynamically stable on admission. The spear trajectory extended toward the upper abdomen. Intraoperative exploration revealed a partial laceration of the pancreatic tail without splenic injury. A distal pancreatectomy with splenic preservation was performed.

Unusual suicide with an electric Jigsaw: A case report and literature review.

Fatal injuries caused by power saws are rare. In most cases, they are accidental and non-voluntary. Even rarer are suicides carried out using power saws, with no previously reported cases of suicide by electric jigsaw. We report a case of suicide by electric jigsaw of a young obese woman suffering from major depression with psychotic features. The peculiarity of our case - compared to those known in the scientific literature - concerns not only the means used for suicide, but also the results of psychological autopsy and the characteristics of the fatal injury. In fact, the autopsy showed a la

Pneumatosis Intestinalis Due to Child Abuse.

Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) and the presence of portal venous gas (PVG) are commonly considered pathognomonic for necrotizing enterocolitis in the neonatal period; however, these 2 radiographic findings have been documented in all age groups in a variety of clinical settings and medical conditions including respiratory, cardiac, rheumatologic, gastrointestinal disorders, and traumatic injury. In children, intramural dissection of intestinal gas in the absence of clinical symptoms suggestive of necrotizing enterocolitis should raise concern for a traumatic etiology, including injuries sustain

Anaesthetic management of intraoperative tracheo-bronchial injury.

Intraoperative tracheobronchial injury (TBI) may manifest clinically as pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum, subcutaneous emphysema, cyanosis, and respiratory insufficiency and has serious implications if it remains undetected or is managed improperly. The outcome of such injuries is affected by the extent of the lesion, pulmonary status & the surgical reconstruction undertaken. The recommended airway management of an intraoperative tracheal tear is to bypass the injured side by intubating the healthy bronchus with a single lumen endotracheal tube (ETT) and the use of a bronchial blocker or double

An injured man with acute altered mental status.

CLINICAL INTRODUCTION: A 58-year-old man sustained injuries due to accidental fall from a height of 5 m onto a solid floor while operating a crane. He was fully conscious without external evidence of head injury when presented to the ED. The patient had multiple fractures involving the fourth, fifth and seventh of the left ribs, left iliac wing and superior ramus of the pelvis, comminuted fracture of the left femur shaft, and an open fracture of the mandible. Two hours after ED presentation, the patient developed acute confusion and lethargy, which rapidly progressed to coma and respiratory di

Bronchial damage and diffuse alveolar hemorrhage following chlorine gas inhalation: A case report.

Chlorine is a toxic inhalant and sources of exposure for individuals include accidental releases of chlorine vapor due to industrial or chemical transportation accidents. Inhalation of a large quantity of gas may cause circulatory and respiratory disorders or even mortality; however, the effects of a small amount of chlorine gas may be asymptomatic. The present case study presents a successfully treated 55-year-old male patient exposed to chlorine gas, resulting in bronchial damage and diffuse alveolar hemorrhage. Endobronchial and alveolar injuries were evaluated by direct observation using f

Cut-throat wounds: Suicidal and homicidal-two case reports and review of literature.

Cut-throat wounds are a well-recognized method of homicide, are less commonly used in suicides and are rarely accidental. The forensic pathologist has a very challenging and important task when commenting on the manner of infliction of such wounds when such a case is presented with no proper history or witnesses. We present two cases of cut-throat wounds, one suicide and one homicide, to show the differences between the pattern of wounds. We highlight the differences between the two cases in relation to other external injuries, the circumstances in which the bodies were found and other factors

Intraorbital foreign body.

Penetrating orbitocranial injuries caused by intraorbital foreign body are a rare cause of morbidity being most common among young people. The term intraorbital foreign body refers to a foreign body that occurs within the orbit but outside the ocular globe. We report the case of a 12-year-old male child who sustained a right cranial facial trauma due to accidental fall on a piece of wood, which penetrated intraorbitally. Native cranial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI -1.5 T) revealed the presence of an intraorbital foreign body, 6 cm long and 1.5 cm wide, near the orbital apex. In our patient,

Sudden death due to massive hemoptysis secondary to pulmonary tuberculosis--a case report.

Forensic pathologists deal not only with criminal, accidental and suicidal deaths, but also with a wide range of deaths from natural causes. Natural deaths at times can be sudden, unexpected and unattended by the relatives or friends or eye witnesses. In such cases, even though there is no criminal element in their causation, the case has to be investigated and medico-legal autopsy has to be conducted to know the exact cause of death, thus putting an end to the allegations raised. A 55-year-old male was found dead lying in his room in a pool of blood without any obvious injuries under suspicio

Fatal accidental hanging by a high-chair waist strap in a 2-year-old girl.

High chairs are commonly used to feed children after 6 months. Related injuries are oftentime minor and rarely leading to death. We describe a case of a 2-year-old female child who used to jump alone on her high chair and also had the habit to fasten the straps by herself. Her mother found her hanging by the waist straps. A thorough investigation showed that she climbed her high chair and fastened the waist straps but not the crotch one. The girl slid down into the seat, trapping her neck in the waist straps and thus resulting in hanging. In here, we concluded that the victim's death was cause

Collateral damage--penetrating head injury and orbital injury: a case report.

We report a case of an accidental death or potential suicide by revolver with subsequent injury of another person. A 44-year-old man shot himself in the head while manipulating his .38 caliber special revolver in the kitchen in the presence of his wife, standing approximately 1.5 m next to him. After passing through the husband's head, the lead round-nose bullet entered the region underneath his wife's left eye. When the bullet left the man's head, it retained the energy to penetrate the soft tissue at this distance, including the skin and thin bone plates like the orbital wall. Owing to the l
