The spread of attention across modalities and space in a multisensory object.

Attending to a stimulus is known to enhance the neural responses to that stimulus. Recent experiments on visual attention have shown that this modulation can have object-based characteristics, such that, when certain parts of a visual object are attended, other parts automatically also receive enhanced processing. Here, we investigated whether visual attention can modulate neural responses to other components of a multisensory object defined by synchronous, but spatially disparate, auditory and visual stimuli. The audiovisual integration of such multisensory stimuli typically leads to mislocal

Pitfalls and challenges when assessing the depth of hypnosis during general anaesthesia by clinical signs and electronic indices.

The objective of this article was to review the present methods used for validating the depth of hypnosis. We introduce three concepts, the real depth of hypnosis (DHreal), the observed depth of hypnosis (DHobs), and the electronic indices of depth of hypnosis (DHel-ind). The DHreal is the real state of hypnosis that the patient has in a given moment during the general anaesthesia. The DHobs is the subjective assessment of the anaesthesiologist based on clinical signs. The DHel-ind is any estimation of the depth of hypnosis given by an electronic device. The three entities DHreal, DHobs and DH

Attention-dependent suppression of distracter visual input can be cross-modally cued as indexed by anticipatory parieto-occipital alpha-band oscillations.

Recent studies show that in addition to enhancing neural processing for attentionally relevant stimuli, selective attention also operates by suppressing the processing of distracter stimuli. When subjects are pre-cued to selectively deploy attention during voluntary (endogenous) attentional tasks, these mechanisms can be set up in advance of actual stimulus processing. That is, the brain can be placed in a biased attentional state. Two recent cueing studies have provided evidence for the deployment of such biased attentional states [J.J. Foxe, G.V. Simpson, S.P. [Distribution in normal subjects of performance in Token test: a basic study for the diagnosis of learning disabilities].

For the diagnosis of specific reading disorder (SRD) we studied the distribution in 187 elementary school children of the scores of Token test. Token test was performed under two conditions: listening and reading by presenting the same sentences. The diagnosis required a normal score under the listening condition, an abnormally low score under the reading condition and significantly large discrepancy between them. This test is valid and convenient for the diagnosis of SRD.

[Otoacoustic emission measurements. Clinical case reports. Part I].

Measurement results of click evoked otoacoustic emissions (EOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE) obtained in two cases of inner ear pathology are presented. One case involved unilateral perceptive deafness in a 18 year old male with a history of heavy mumps, and the other concerned early hearing loss due to 5-year exposure to industrial noise in a 23 year old male. Feasibility of using otoacoustic emission measurements to determine the extent and type of hearing loss is discussed.

Stimulus induced behaviours in Tourette's syndrome.

Three cases of Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) who experienced different tic related behaviours in response to both external and internal stimuli are described. Such behaviours might represent sensory tics, reflex motor tics, exaggerated startle responses, or obsessive compulsive behaviours. It is suggested that there is a continuum of stimulus induced behaviours, and that, in some cases, separations into individual descriptive entities may be difficult. There also seems to be a continuum between internal and external phenomena that induce the behaviours. Implications for the relation b

Tympanic muscle reflex elicited by electric stimulation of the tongue in normal and pathological subjects.

A bilateral reflex contraction of the tensor tympani muscle has been obtained in man by electric stimulation of the tongue (1-2 mA). The stimulus is well tolerated and always effective. The advantage is stressed of eliciting a contraction of this muscle without involvement of the stapedius, as occurs with other methods. An analysis has been subsequently conducted in normal subjects and in patients affected by pathology of the tympano-ossicular system: tympanosclerosis, otosclerosis, suprastapedial facial paralysis; in cases of interruption of the afferent arch: section of the homo-lateral ling

Sustained acoustic medicine for the treatment of musculoskeletal injuries: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BackgroundMusculoskeletal injuries account for 10 million work-limited days per year and often lead to both acute and/or chronic pain, and increased chances of re-injury or permanent disability. Conservative treatment options include various modalities, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and physical rehabilitation programs. Sustained Acoustic Medicine is an emerging prescription home-use mechanotransductive device to stimulate cellular proliferation, increase microstreaming and cavitation in situ, and to increase tissue profusion and permeability. This research aims to summarize the clinic

Functional maturation of the medial efferent olivocochlear system in human neonates.

The effect of contralateral acoustic stimulation on transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) was used to investigate the functional maturity of the medial efferent olivocochlear system in full term neonates and a 6-week-old baby. The technique used was to record the TEOAE alternately with and without contralateral noise. The result was a reduction in TEOAE amplitude and latency. This was best illustrated with a difference waveform obtained from the subtraction of the TEOAE waveform recorded with contralateral noise, from the waveform recorded without contralateral noise. All the full ter…

Auditory response to pulsed radiofrequency energy.

The human auditory response to pulses of radiofrequency (RF) energy, commonly called RF hearing, is a well established phenomenon. RF induced sounds can be characterized as low intensity sounds because, in general, a quiet environment is required for the auditory response. The sound is similar to other common sounds such as a click, buzz, hiss, knock, or chirp. Effective radiofrequencies range from 2.4 to 10000 MHz, but an individual's ability to hear RF induced sounds is dependent upon high frequency acoustic hearing in the kHz range above about 5 kHz. The site of conversion of RF energy to a

Delayed facial palsy after acoustic neuroma resection: the role of viral reactivation.

Delayed facial palsy after acoustic neuroma resection may occur in up to 15% of cases. Prognosis is generally good if the palsy does not progress to total paralysis. However, a delayed palsy with subsequent total paralysis has a more variable final outcome, which ranges from normal function to permanent total paralysis. This delayed paralysis has been attributed to edema from surgical manipulation of the facial nerve. Steroids and intraoperative decompression of the meatal foramen have been used with some success, but some cases remain refractory to these measures. Herpes simplex virus and var

Effects of high intensity impulse noise on ionic concentrations in cochlear endolymph of the guinea pig.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of acoustic overstimulation on concentrations of cations in cochlear endolymph and analyze the relationship between the ionic changes in endolymph and the hearing loss. METHODS: The endocochlear potentials (EP), K+, Na+ and Ca2+ concentration in cochlear endolymph were examined in vivo for normal and 167 +/- 2 dB SPL impulse noise exposed groups of guinea pig bored on time course by means of double-barreled ion-selective microelectrodes. Brain stem auditory evoked potential (BAEP) was used to evaluate the auditory function. Ca(2+)-ATPase activity was demon

[A case of superficial siderosis of the central nervous system with total deafness].

Superficial siderosis of the central nervous system (SSCN) in a disease characterized by chronic deposition of hemosiderin in the leptomeninges, subpial tissue, spinal cord, and cranial nerves. Previously the diagnosis of SSCN could only be made at autopsy or during a neurosurgical procedure. Now, however, a diagnosis of SSCN can be made non-invasively by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). We present the case of a 50-year-old male with SSCN accompanied by bilateral sensorineural hearing loss which gradually progressed to total deafness over a seven year period. This patient also had associated

Transcutaneous auricular vagus nerve stimulation enhances learning of novel letter-sound relationships in adults.

BACKGROUND: Reading is a critical skill in modern society but is significantly more difficult to acquire during adulthood. Many adults are required to learn a new orthography after this window closes for personal or vocational reasons and while many programs and training methods exist for learning to read in adulthood, none result in native-like fluency. Implantable cervical vagus nerve stimulation is capable of driving neural plasticity but is invasive and not practical as a reading intervention. OBJECTIVE: The goal of the current study was to evaluate whether non-invasive transcutaneous aur

Cortical centres underlying auditory temporal processing in humans: a PET study.

We have used positron emission tomography (PET) to test a specific hypothesis of a neural system subserving auditory temporal processing (acoustical stimulus duration discrimination). Maps of the cerebral blood flow distribution during specific stimulations were obtained from five normally-hearing and otherwise healthy subjects. The auditory stimuli consisted of sounds of varying duration and of auditorily presented words in which the duration of the initial phoneme was manipulated. All stimuli alternated with conditions of silence in a subtraction paradigm. The blood flow distribution was map

Targeting Arousal and Sleep through Noninvasive Brain Stimulation to Improve Mental Health.

Arousal and sleep represent fundamental physiological domains, and alterations in the form of insomnia (difficulty falling or staying asleep) or hypersomnia (increased propensity for falling asleep or increased sleep duration) are prevalent clinical problems. Current first-line treatments include psychotherapy and pharmacotherapy. Despite significant success, a number of patients do not benefit sufficiently. Progress is limited by an incomplete understanding of the -neurobiology of insomnia and hypersomnia. This work summarizes current concepts of the regulation of arousal and sleep and its mo

Crocodile egg sounds signal hatching time.

Crocodilians are known to vocalize within the egg shortly before hatching [1,2]. Although a possible function of these calls - inducing hatching in siblings and stimulating the adult female to open the nest - has already been suggested, it has never been experimentally tested [1-5]. Here, we present the first experimental evidence that pre-hatching calls of Nile crocodile (Crocodylus niloticus) juveniles are informative acoustic signals which indeed target both siblings and mother.

Distraction by deviant sounds: Response repetition vs. response change.

In oddball paradigms, rare deviant stimuli reliably produce behavioral distraction, disrupting performance in ongoing primary tasks. However, the specific mechanisms through which deviance affects response selection and execution remain unclear. Recent evidence suggests that deviant sounds may differentially affect response repetitions and response changes, but whether these effects reflect a single underlying process or functionally independent mechanisms has not been established. We investigated this question using a cross-modal auditory-visual oddball task in which participants (N = 115) id

Inverted encoding of neural responses to audiovisual stimuli reveals super-additive multisensory enhancement.

A central challenge for the brain is how to combine separate sources of information from different sensory modalities to optimally represent objects and events in the external world, such as combining someone's speech and lip movements to better understand them in a noisy environment. At the level of individual neurons, audiovisual stimuli often elicit super-additive interactions, where the neural response is greater than the sum of auditory and visual responses. However, investigations using electroencephalography (EEG) to record brain activity have revealed inconsistent interactions, with st
