An approach to determining intracranial pressure variability capable of predicting decreased intracranial adaptive capacity in patients with traumatic brain injury.

Nurses caring for traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients with intracranial hypertension (ICH) recognize that patients whose intracranial adaptive capacity is reduced are susceptible to periods of disproportionate increase in intracranial pressure (DIICP) in response to a variety of stimuli. It is possible that DIICP signals potential secondary brain damage due to sustained or intermittent ICH. However, there are few clinically accessible intracranial pressure (ICP) measurement parameters that allow nurses and other critical care clinicians to identify patients at risk of DIICP. The purpose of t

Gait and neuromuscular adaptations after using a feedback-based gait monitoring knee brace.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the gait and neuromuscular effects of a feedback-based gait monitoring knee brace. The aim of this paper was to explore how training with this knee brace affected the gait pattern utilized, rate of loading (ROL), and proprioceptive acuity. METHODS: Fifteen healthy women wore this knee brace that provided audible feedback on gait kinematics for a 30-min training period. We performed pre- and post-gait analyses and proprioceptive acuity assessments to determine gait learning and adaptation with this training. RESULTS: Post-training significant

Intestinal resection induces angiogenesis within adapting intestinal villi.

PURPOSE: Adaptive growth of the intestinal mucosa in response to massive gut loss is fundamental for autonomy from parenteral nutrition. Although angiogenesis is essential for cellular proliferation in other tissues, its relevance to intestinal adaptation is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that resection-induced adaptation is associated with new blood vessel growth. METHODS: Male C57Bl/6 mice underwent either a 50% small bowel resection or a sham (transection and reanastomosis) operation. After 1, 3, or 7 days, capillary density within the intestinal villi was measured using confocal micros

Microwave exposure induces Hsp70 and confers protection against hypoxia in chick embryos.

To determine if microwave exposure could elicit a biological effect in the absence of thermal stress, studies were designed in which chick embryos were exposed to athermal microwave radiation (915 MHz) to look for induction of Hsp70, a protein produced during times of cellular stress that aids in the protection of cellular components. Levels of Hsp70 were found to increase within 2 h, with maximum expression ( approximately 30% higher than controls) typically occurring by 3 h from the start of exposure. Other embryos were exposed to microwave radiation prior to being subjected to hypoxic stres

Musculoskeletal adaptations and injuries due to overtraining.

Overtraining places a demand on the musculoskeletal system that may lead to damage to the musculoskeletal system, as well as to clinical, functional, and biomechanical adaptations that may be detrimental to sport performance. The types of injuries identified range from overt, which are obvious injuries that will usually prevent athletic performance for some period of time, to the subclinical, which decrease performance, but may be seldom recognized. These injuries apparently may be avoided or lessened in severity by a combination of several methods. A thorough preparticipation evaluation is im

[Effects of nasal respiration on the thermo-adaptive capacity of the airways].

Respiratory thermography characterizes the role of nasal respiration in the thermo-adaptive function of airways. During nasal inspiration the air temperature in alveoli is 1.5--2.0 degrees C higher than during oral inspiration not only in patients with chronic pulmonary diseases but also in healthy people. In this context, correction of nasal respiration in people with chronic pulmonary diseases should be considered as an efficient factor for preventing exacerbation of the diseases.

Dissociation between corticosterone and growth hormone adaptation to chronic stress in the rat.

We have studied the effect of acute and chronic stress on corticosterone and growth hormone (GH) serum levels in male Wistar rats. Both acute noise-light stress and the presence of a dog elicited an increase in corticosterone and a decrease in GH levels in serum. While previous chronic stress induced a reduction of corticosterone response to the same stimuli, no reduction was observed in GH response. In addition, chronic exposure to noise-light stress induced modifications in corticosterone but not in GH response to dog presence. The results suggest that GH and corticoadrenal response mechanis

The impact of phenotypic heterogeneity on fungal pathogenicity and drug resistance.

Phenotypic heterogeneity in genetically clonal populations facilitates cellular adaptation to adverse environmental conditions while enabling a return to the basal physiological state. It also plays a crucial role in pathogenicity and the acquisition of drug resistance in unicellular organisms and cancer cells, yet the exact contributing factors remain elusive. In this review, we outline the current state of understanding concerning the contribution of phenotypic heterogeneity to fungal pathogenesis and antifungal drug resistance.

A Narrative Review of HRV Metric Selection for Applied Monitoring: RMSSD as the Default Metric for Sport and Exercise.

Heart rate variability (HRV) monitoring is commonly used in sport and exercise science to assess recovery, training adaptation, and performance readiness. However, the routine reporting of numerous HRV metrics with substantial conceptual and physiological overlap has created inconsistency regarding which indices should be prioritized for applied monitoring. This narrative review synthesizes the contemporary literature to provide practical recommendations regarding HRV metric selection in applied monitoring, with particular emphasis on whether the root mean square of successive differences betw

Community context redirects evolutionary trajectories under stress.

Adaptation to abiotic stress is typically studied in single-species cultures, yet bacteria inhabit and evolve in multispecies communities where neighboring organisms reshape, for example, nutrient availability, redox state, and cellular physiology. We recently demonstrated that interspecies interactions can alter the fitness effects of antibiotic resistance mutations, and we suggest that this reflects a broader principle. Stress-response networks are extensively cross-regulated and draw upon a shared, finite pool of proteomic and energetic resources. Consequently, activation of one pathway con

Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry Analysis of Proteins Associated with Age-Related Disorders in Human Pituitary Tissue.

The pituitary gland is involved in multiple physiological functions, including growth, development, reproduction, stress adaptation, osmotic balance, body composition, skin pigmentation, and aging. Advancing age is characterized by dysfunctions in multiple physiological signaling mechanisms, concomitant with perturbed patterns of pituitary hormone release as well as disrupted rhythmic secretion of virtually all pituitary hormones. This chapter presents a liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) protocol for analysis of the protein content in post-mortem pituitary glands. It wa

Differentiating Athlete's Heart From Cardiomyopathies - The Left Side.

In athletes who undertake a high volume of high intensity exercise, the resultant changes in cardiac structure and function which develop as a result of physiological adaptation to exercise (so called "Athlete's Heart") may overlap with some features of pathological conditions. This chapter will focus on the left side of the heart, where left ventricular cavity enlargement, increase in left ventricular wall thickness and increased left ventricular trabeculation associated with athletic remodelling may sometimes be difficult to differentiate from conditions such as dilated cardiomyopathy, hyper

Physiological Hypoxia and Pharmacological HIF Stabilization Induce Distinct but Overlapping Responses in Retinal Pigment Epithelial Cells.

Background/Objectives: Hypoxia is a major contributor to the development of retinal diseases by promoting metabolic adaptation and pathological angiogenesis through hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) signaling. HIF-prolyl hydroxylase inhibitors (HIF-PHIs), which stabilize HIF under normoxic conditions, are widely used to treat anemia associated with chronic kidney disease. However, it remains unclear whether pharmacological HIF stabilization fully reproduces the cellular responses induced by physiological hypoxia. Methods: In this study, ARPE-19 cells were exposed to either physiological hypoxia o

Integrative Multi-Omics Analysis Identifies Candidate MicroRNA Regulatory Networks Associated With High-Altitude Adaptation in Tibetan Pigs.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are key posttranscriptional regulators of gene expression and play important roles in physiological responses to hypoxia, particularly in the cardiovascular system. However, the regulatory roles of miRNAs in cardiopulmonary tissues during high-altitude adaptation remain poorly understood. Tibetan pigs are a high-altitude-adapted breed with strong hypoxia tolerance, making them an ideal model for investigating the molecular mechanisms underlying high-altitude adaptation. In this study, we compared miRNA expression profiles between Tibetan pigs and low-altitude Meishan pigs an

Ambient Temperature Shapes Skeletal Muscle Growth and Fiber-Type Plasticity in Mice.

Skeletal muscle development and physiological homeostasis are profoundly influenced by environmental cues. Among these factors, ambient temperature represents a critical determinant of growth performance and metabolic adaptation in mammals. However, the effects of different ambient temperature ranges on skeletal muscle characteristics and on responses across multiple visceral tissues remain poorly understood. In this study, five ambient temperature conditions (16 °C, 20 °C, 24 °C, 28 °C, and 32 °C) were established to investigate their physiological impacts in a mouse model. Our results demons

Silicon central pattern generators for cardiac diseases.

Cardiac rhythm management devices provide therapies for both arrhythmias and resynchronisation but not heart failure, which affects millions of patients worldwide. This paper reviews recent advances in biophysics and mathematical engineering that provide a novel technological platform for addressing heart disease and enabling beat-to-beat adaptation of cardiac pacing in response to physiological feedback. The technology consists of silicon hardware central pattern generators (hCPGs) that may be trained to emulate accurately the dynamical response of biological central pattern generators (bCPGs

Spatiotemporal remodeling of bone as a reversibly adaptive biological material in Djungarian hamsters under regulated photoperiod conditions.

Bone loss in humans is typically progressive and difficult to reverse, posing challenges for both pharmacological therapy and the long-term performance of bone replacement materials. Photoperiod-sensitive species such as the Djungarian hamster undergo cyclical physiological adaptations in response to seasonal light cues, providing a unique framework to investigate bone adaptation during physiologically regulated phases of bone loss under endocrine and circadian control without surgical or pharmacological intervention. Female Djungarian hamsters were maintained under long-day (LD) or short-day
