Risk of developing major depressive disorder and anxiety disorders among adolescents and adults with atopic dermatitis: a nationwide longitudinal study.

BACKGROUND: Previous cross-sectional studies have suggested a comorbid association between atopic dermatitis (AD) and depressive disorder as well as anxiety disorders, but the temporal relationship was not determined. METHODS: Using the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database, 8208 AD patients aged 12 and older without psychiatric history and age-/sex-matched (1:1) controls between 1998 and 2008 were enrolled in our study and followed to the end of 2011. Subjects who developed major depression, any depressive disorder, and anxiety disorders during the follow-up were identified. RE

White Matter Development is Potentially Influenced in Adolescents with Vertically Transmitted HIV Infections: A Tract-Based Spatial Statistics Study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Convergent evidence indicates that HIV is associated with abnormal WM microstructure in adults. However, little is known about whether HIV affects WM development in adolescents. In this study, we used DTI to investigate the integrity of WM microstructure in adolescents with vertically transmitted HIV infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Fifteen HIV-positive adolescents with vertically transmitted infections and 26 HIV-negative controls participated in this study. Whole-brain analysis of fractional anisotropy was performed by Tract-Based Spatial Statistics to localize abn

Activity-based anorexia during adolescence disrupts normal development of the CA1 pyramidal cells in the ventral hippocampus of female rats.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) is a psychiatric illness characterized by restricted eating and irrational fears of gaining weight. There is no accepted pharmacological treatment for AN, and AN has the highest mortality rate among psychiatric illnesses. Anorexia nervosa most commonly affects females during adolescence, suggesting an effect of sex and hormones on vulnerability to the disease. Activity-based anorexia (ABA) is a rodent model of AN that shares symptoms with AN, including over-exercise, elevation of stress hormones, and genetic links to anxiety traits. We previously reported that ABA in adol

Association of family income supplements in adolescence with development of psychiatric and substance use disorders in adulthood among an American Indian population.

CONTEXT: In a natural experiment in which some families received income supplements, prevalence of adolescent behavioral symptoms decreased significantly. These adolescents are now young adults. OBJECTIVE: To examine the effects of income supplements in adolescence and adulthood on the prevalence of adult psychiatric disorders. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental, longitudinal. POPULATION AND SETTING: A representative sample of children aged 9, 11, or 13 years in 1993 (349 [25%] of whom are American Indian) were assessed for psychiatric and substance use disorders through age 21 years (1993-2006). Primary anxiety disorders and the development of subsequent alcohol use disorders: a 4-year community study of adolescents and young adults.

BACKGROUND: Cross-sectional findings in community surveys of adults suggest that adolescent anxiety disorders are strong predictors of the subsequent onset of alcohol use, abuse and dependence. However, prospective data that follow a sample of adolescents into adulthood are needed to confirm these associations. METHOD: Baseline and 4-year follow-up data from the EDSP-Study, a prospective community survey of 3021 (2548 at follow-up) adolescents and young adults aged 14 to 24 years at baseline carried out in Munich, were used. DSM-IV anxiety disorders, alcohol use and alcohol use disorders were

Assessment of adherence with multiple informants in pre-adolescents with spina bifida: initial development of a multidimensional, multitask parent-report questionnaire.

Adherence to medical regimens was assessed in 67 pre-adolescents with spina bifida (8- and 9-year-olds; 37 boys, 30 girls), with mother, father, teacher, and health professional report. The Parent-Report of Medical Adherence in Spina Bifida Scale (PROMASB) was developed and includes multidimensional scales for the following tasks: catheterization, bowel care, skin care, medication, and ambulation. With few exceptions, the PROMASB has adequate psychometric properties. However, findings revealed modest to low correlations between respondents. Mothers and fathers reported significantly more nonco

[Combined verbal and sign language for promoting communication development in non-verbal or or pre-verbal children and adolescents with mental retardation].

Conveying alternative and augmentative approaches to communication is becoming necessary for increasing numbers of persons with mental retardation with no or poor oral skills. The preverbal and nonverbal forms of communicating, hence, have special relevance in a developmental context. A natural extension of gestic messages, it in particular is the use of signing that is apt to enhance speech and language acquisition and bring about distinct improvement in understanding and making oneself understood. Exchanging messages by sign language can reveal to the child the significance of his/her own be

A follow-up study of the effects of early malnutrition on subsequent development. I. Physical growth and sexual maturation during adolescence.

A follow-up study of growth and development was conducted on 216 Barbadian children aged 9 to 15 yr, half of whom had histories of moderate to severe protein-energy malnutrition in their 1st yr of life. Although index girls had significant delays in sexual maturation and were reduced relative to comparison girls on measures of weight for height, arm circumference, and skinfold thickness, their rate of growth when compared with values obtained 4 yr earlier was equal to or better than that of the comparison group. In contrast, boys in the index group were slightly reduced in height compared with

Development and Pilot Clinical Evaluation of DiaBuddy, a Point-of-Care Decision Support Tool for Children and Adolescents with Insulin-Treated Diabetes.

Background - Optimal management of insulin-treated pediatric and adolescent diabetes, particularly type 1 diabetes (T1D), requires precise insulin dosing and sick-day decision-making; deficiencies in either predispose to hypoglycemia, suboptimal glycaemic control, and diabetic ketoacidosis. We developed DiaBuddy™, a guideline-aligned mobile decision support tool, and evaluated its accuracy versus expert guidance and clinical changes observed during pilot evaluation in children and adolescents with insulin-treated diabetes. Methods - The preclinical validation compared DiaBuddy and family recom

Therapeutic interventions for adolescent suicidal behavior and self-harm: an umbrella review for developing clinical practice guidelines in South Korea.

BACKGROUND: South Korea has the highest suicide rate among member countries of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, reaching 29.1 per 100,000 people in 2024, alongside a concurrent increase in the prevalence of adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), estimated at 21.2%-24%, substantially exceeding the global average. Despite this public health crisis, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines specifically addressing adolescent suicidal behavior and NSSI in the Korean context remain lacking. This umbrella review synthesizes evidence on therapeutic interventions to i

Measuring proactive-instrumental aggression in adolescents and young adults-development and preliminary validity evidence for the Degree-of-Quiz-Difficulty Paradigm.

INTRODUCTION: Aggression can be distinguished into reactive and proactive forms, which differ in their motivational and emotional characteristics. While reactive aggression is typically triggered by provocation and accompanied by heightened emotional arousal, proactive aggression is goal-directed, instrumentally motivated, and characterized by greater emotional control. Despite its relevance for antisocial behavior, proactive aggression is still assessed predominantly through self-report measures, and experimental paradigms specifically designed to capture it remain scarce, particularly for ad

Development and clinical implementation of a care guideline to support self-management and responsibility transition in adolescents and young adults with biliary atresia.

OBJECTIVE: This study developed, refined, and implemented a care guideline for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with biliary atresia surviving with their native livers and their parents, based on a responsibility transition process model. We evaluated its clinical usefulness and identified challenges related to sustainable implementation. This study extends a previously developed responsibility transition model by translating it into a clinically implemented guideline and examining its real-world applicability. METHODS: An implementation-focused, multiphase mixed-methods design was used. P

Development and Validation of a Novel Algorithm for Classifying Diabetes Type in Adolescents and Young Adults Using Electronic Health Record Data.

SIGNIFICANCE: Scanning nondiffracting Bessel beams in light-sheet fluorescence microscopy (LSFM) can expand the field of view (FOV), but side lobes of the Bessel beams produce the out-of-focus background and limit the axial resolution. Furthermore, optical aberrations degrade the image quality and affect the imaging depth. AIM: To compensate wavefront distortions and enhance the imaging performance in LSFM, we propose a method that combines the adaptive optics (AO) with the complementary beam subtraction (CBS) method in LSFM, referred as AO-CBS. APPROACH: In the AO-CBS method, the sensorless

Building EVA (Educación, Vinculación, y Autoayuda): Tutorial for the Development of a Digital Mental Health Chatbot for Adolescents Living With HIV.

Adolescents living with HIV face higher rates of mental health morbidity compared to other age groups, particularly depressive symptoms, while access to specialized services remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries. Chatbots offer a promising, low-cost approach to delivering structured mental health support in resource-constrained settings; however, practical guidance on how to develop such tools with end-user involvement remains scarce. This tutorial provides a step-by-step guide to the human-centered design and development of a mental health chatbot for adolescents living wit

The development of in-group-favoring math stereotypes among adolescents across gender and race/ethnicity: Teacher influence and motivational consequences.

The developmental processes underlying in-group-favoring math stereotypes (i.e., beliefs that favor one's own gender over another gender in math ability) and their associated motivational benefits in adolescence remain understudied. Guided by developmental intergroup theory and situated expectancy-value theory, the present study examined (a) the reciprocal relations between in-group-favoring math stereotypes and perceived math teacher support; (b) their associations with math motivational outcomes (i.e., math expectancies, math identity, and math grade point average); and (c) gender difference

A new potential intervention strategy to promote the "body-mind-brain" health development of Chinese children and adolescents: a scoping review.

OBJECTIVE: This scoping review maps the extent and nature of literature on Shaolin martial arts (SMA) and examines how direct, contextual, and indirect evidence may inform hypotheses about body-mind-brain health in children and adolescents. It does not evaluate intervention effectiveness. METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidance, we searched PubMed, Web of Science, CNKI, and Wanfang Data from database inception to February 2026. Eligibility was defined by the population-concept-context framework. Records were classified as direct empirical evidence, contextual SMA literature, or indirect mechan

Parental sexual health development support for emerging adolescents in western upstate New York: a qualitative interpretive description study.

Parents and caregivers are critical in supporting emerging adolescents as they begin developing the foundations of sexual health and wellbeing. This study aimed to explore how parents and caregivers support sexual health development among emerging adolescents aged 10-14 years in Monroe County, New York. A qualitative interpretive description and conventional content analysis approach guided data collection and analysis. Purposive maximum variation and snowball sampling resulted in 20 participants being recruited and engaged in semi-structured in-depth interviews. Parents described sexual healt
