The prevalence of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder (FASD) does not appear to be diminishing over time. Indeed, recent data suggests that the disorder may be more prevalent than previously thought. A variety of public education programs developed over the last 20 years have promoted alcohol abstention during pregnancy, yet FASD remains a serious public health concern. OBJECTIVES: To examine the nutritional quality of gluten-free (GF) products specifically marketed for children.
METHODS: All child-targeted food products were purchased from 2 major supermarket chains in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Using the Pan American Health Organization Nutrient Profile Model, the nutritional quality of products with a GF claim was compared with those without such a claim. Predictors of adolescent gambling behavior were examined in a sample of 436 males and females (ages 13-16). A biopsychosocial model was used to identify key variables that differentiate between non-gambling and gambling adolescents. Logistic regression found that, as compared to adolescent male non-gamblers, adolescent male gamblers were older, had more conflict in their family, were more likely to have used drugs, and have peers that gamble. Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency is transmitted as an X-linked recessive disorder, and thus female infants are expected to be only rarely affected. Review of the records of 1,478 jaundiced newborn infants (728 boys and 750 girls) screened for G6PD deficiency at the Foothills Provincial Hospital in Calgary showed 41 (5.6%) boys and 17 (2.2%) girls with this disorder. In view of the unexpected and unexplained high frequency of G6PD deficiency in female infants, I recommend that screening for this disorder be done in selected jaundiced infants regardless of sex.
