Use of PCR in the diagnosis of pericardial amebiasis: a case report and systematic review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) is rarely identified as a cause of amebic pericarditis. We report a case of amebic pericarditis complicated by cardiac tamponade, in which the diagnosis was missed initially and was made retrospectively by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) testing of a stored sample of pericardial fluid. Furthermore, we performed a systematic review of the literature on amebic pericarditis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 71-year-old Japanese man who had a history of sexual intercourse with several commercial sex workers 4 months previously, presented to our hospital with

[Intestinal amebiasis in the ileac blind end of an ileocolonic anastomosis leading to liver abscess].

A 65-year-old man was admitted complaining of high fever and pain in the right lower abdomen. An ileocolonic side-to-end anastomosis had been performed 38 years previously for an abscess in a colonic diverticulum. On the current admission, findings on contrast-enhanced computed tomography suggested an amebic liver abscess and intestinal amebiasis. Colonoscopy revealed an irregularly shaped ulcer and false membrane in the ileal blind end of the ileocolonic anastomosis. Amebic trophozoites were seen by rapid microscopy. Amebiasis in the blind end of the ileum has rarely been reported. This case …

Modulation of innate immune response by the vagus nerve in experimental hepatic amebiasis in rats.

The parasympathetic nervous system has a crucial role in immunomodulation of the vagus nerve, its structure provides a pathogen detection system, and a negative feedback to the immune system after the pathogenic agent has been eliminated. Amebiasis is a disease caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, considered the third leading cause of death in the world. The rats are used as a natural resistance model to amoebic liver infection. The aim of this study is to analyze the interaction of Entamoeba histolytica with neutrophils, macrophages, and NK cells in livers of intact and vag…

[The current view of the diagnosis and management of amebiasis in the light of the authors own case reports].

This comprehensive review is focused on a serious protozoan disease, amebiasis. This disease is caused by the human parasite Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica), the second leading cause of mortality due to protozoan disease worldwide (the leading cause is malaria). The incidence of amebiasis in the Czech Republic is very low, but it may be underreported as the disease often escapes diagnosis. Intestinal colonisation by E. histolytica may be asymptomatic. The clinical picture ranges from diarrhea to colitis or fulminant colitis when the parasite progresses to the trophozoite stage. Secondar…

Epidemiology of amebiasis in a region of high incidence of amebic liver abscess in central Vietnam.

The recent identification of Entamoeba dispar as a separate species, which is nonpathogenic for humans but morphologically indistinguishable from Entamoeba histolytica, has prompted the World Health Organization to recommend reinforced efforts for reassessment of the epidemiology of amebiasis and, in particular, of E. histolytica. In this regard, the distribution of amebic liver abscess (ALA) cases were analyzed in the province of Thua Thien Hué (TT Hué) in central Vietnam, a region known for its high incidence of invasive amebiasis. In addition, in a particular area of Hué City, a parasitolog…

Transient appendiceal enlargement in a patient with colonic amebiasis: sonographic detection and follow-up.

A case of colonic amebiasis with no clinical signs of acute appendicitis but with sonographic visualization of an enlarged appendix is reported. As antiamebic therapy resolved the clinical signs and symptoms of the amebiasis, the sonographic appearance of the appendix returned to normal. Thus, an enlarged appendix does not necessarily indicate clinical appendicitis in patients with colonic amebiasis.

Serologic diagnosis of extraintestinal amebiasis: a comparison of stick-ELISA and other immunological tests.

The sera of 37 patients with amebic liver abscess and of 20 healthy donors were tested in Stick-ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay), and the results compared to those obtained with complement fixation, indirect hemagglutination, counterelectrophoresis, and latex agglutination. Stick-ELISA results correlated positively with those of complement fixation and indirect hemagglutination at the one percent level.

Entamoeba histolytica Interaction with Enteropathogenic Escherichia coli Increases Parasite Virulence and Inflammation in Amebiasis.

Epidemiological studies suggest frequent association of enteropathogenic bacteria with Entamoeba histolytica during symptomatic infection. In this study, we sought to determine if the interaction with enteropathogenic (EPEC) or nonpathogenic Escherichia coli (strain DH5α) could modify the virulence of E. histolytica to cause disease in animal models of amebiasis. In vitro studies showed a 2-fold increase in CaCo2 monolayer destruction when E. histolytica interacted with EPEC but not with E. coli DH5α for 2.5 h. This was associated with increased E. histolytica proteolytic activity as revealed …

Amebiasis and mucosal IgA antibody against the Entamoeba histolytica adherence lectin in Bangladeshi children.

Amebiasis is the third leading parasitic cause of death worldwide, and it is not known whether immunity is acquired from a previous infection. An investigation was done to determine whether protection from intestinal infection correlated with mucosal or systemic antibody responses to the Entamoeba histolytica GalNAc adherence lectin. E. histolytica colonization was present in 0% (0/64) of children with and 13.4% (33/246) of children without stool IgA anti-GalNAc lectin antibodies (P= .001). Children with stool IgA lectin-specific antibodies at the beginning of the study had 64% fewer new E. hi…
