The author summarises the occurrence of major diseases in wild animals maintained in captivity in South America. The epidemiology, impact and significance of the diseases are discussed, together with appropriate husbandry practices to control and prevent transmissible diseases. We analyzed the geographic distribution of the Ixodes ricinus-like ticks in eastern North America by comparing the mitochondrial 16S rDNA sequences of specimens sampled directly from the field during the 1990s. National statistics on waterborne outbreaks in the United States of America show that 1,702 waterborne outbreaks with 542,018 cases of illness and 1,089 deaths have been reported. Almost all deaths prior to 1940 were due to typhoid fever; 9 deaths from other causes have occurred since 1971. The beneficial effect of cervical cytology in reducing the incidence of invasive cervical cancer is well accepted, but many issues regarding specific patterns of screening remain to be resolved, and preventive programmes need to be adapted to regional characteristics. We conducted an in vitro susceptibility study of bacterial pathogens to various antimicrobials. Strains of Shigella, Salmonella, Escherichia coli, and Klebsiella pneumoniae collected in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico Federico Gomez were tested against ampicillin, chloramphenicol, tetracycline, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, amikacin, gentamicin, and furazolidone. A total of 227 hydatidiform moles was recorded in Paraguay over a 10-year period (1960 to 1969). Using demographic studies, the annual incidence of hydatidiform moles was calculated as 0.229 per 1000 pregnancies or 1 per 4369 pregnancies, with the highest incidence occurring at the extremes of reproductive life.
