The effects of neonatal amygdala or hippocampus lesions on adult social behavior.

The present report details the final phase of a longitudinal evaluation of the social behavior in a cohort of adult rhesus monkeys that received bilateral neurotoxic lesions of the amygdala or hippocampus, or sham operations at 2 weeks of age. Results were compared to previous studies in which adult animals received amygdala lesions and were tested in a similar fashion. Social testing with four novel interaction partners occurred when the animals were between 7 and 8 years of age. Experimental animals interacted with two male and two female partners in two conditions - one in which physical ac

Sex pheromone communication and its regulation by the sex determination pathway in cockroaches.

Sexual communication in animals orchestrates a series of interactive behaviors from locating and recognizing potential partners to courtship and final mating decisions and is thus critical for sexual reproduction and population fitness. Highly efficient communication between the sexes requires not only the production and emission of species-specific signals but also their precise detection and interpretation by the receiving individuals. Cockroaches, as one of the most evolutionarily ancient and successful group of insects, are quintessential chemical communicators that rely heavily on sex phe

The gastrointestinal microbiome of browsing goats (Capra hircus).

Despite the growing interest in the ruminants' gastrointestinal tract (GIT) microbiomes' ability to degrade plant materials by animal husbandry and industrial sectors, only a few studies addressed browsing ruminants. The present work describes the taxonomic and functional profile of the bacterial and archaeal communities from five different gastrointestinal sections (rumen, omasum-abomasum, jejunum, cecum and colon) of browsing Capra hircus, by metabarcoding using 16S rRNA genes hypervariable regions. The bacterial communities across the GITs are mainly composed of Bacillota and Bacteroidota.

Epithelial-stromal interaction and progesterone receptors in the mouse uterus.

Healthy uterine function depends on the balanced interaction of the ovarian steroids estrogen and progesterone (P4) signaling through their respective receptors. The expression of each receptor is regulated by the other through crucial cross talk between the epithelial and stromal compartments. Ablation of the progesterone receptor (PR) results in complete infertility in mice, and evidence increasingly demonstrates that the PR is a major mediator of epithelial-stromal cross talk and events leading to the disruption of this communication can lead to P4 resistance in the uterus. This resistance,

Cellular basis for paracrine regulation of ovarian follicle development.

Paracrine factors secreted by oocytes and somatic cells regulate many important aspects of early ovarian follicle development in mammals. From activation of dormant primordial follicles to selection of secondary follicles, locally acting factors have been identified that appear to exert important effects on the growth and differentiation of oocytes and granulosa cells. This article summarizes evidence to support a model for bi-directional paracrine communication that is based on developmental regulation of the delivery and reception of paracrine factors at the oocyte-granulosa cell interface.

Salmonellosis outbreak traced to playground sand, Australia, 2007-2009.

A community outbreak of gastroenteritis in Australia during 2007-2009 was caused by ingestion of playground sand contaminated with Salmonella enterica Paratyphi B, variant Java. The bacterium was also isolated from local wildlife. Findings support consideration of nonfood sources during salmonellosis outbreak investigations and indicate transmission through the animal-human interface.

Distorted Tonotopic Coding of Temporal Envelope and Fine Structure with Noise-Induced Hearing Loss.

UNLABELLED: People with cochlear hearing loss have substantial difficulty understanding speech in real-world listening environments (e.g., restaurants), even with amplification from a modern digital hearing aid. Unfortunately, a disconnect remains between human perceptual studies implicating diminished sensitivity to fast acoustic temporal fine structure (TFS) and animal studies showing minimal changes in neural coding of TFS or slower envelope (ENV) structure. Here, we used general system-identification (Wiener kernel) analyses of chinchilla auditory nerve fiber responses to Gaussian noise to

Trichinellosis knowledge and preventive practices in Mapuche communities of southern Chile: Evidence for targeted One Health implementation.

Trichinellosis is a foodborne zoonosis that persists in rural areas where backyard pig farming and informal slaughtering occur. In Indigenous communities, prevention depends on interconnected human behaviors, animal management, and local environmental factors. This study aimed to describe knowledge and preventive practices regarding trichinellosis among Mapuche communities in south-central Chile and to assess whether higher knowledge is associated with safer practices, while controlling for community and demographic factors. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 180 adults from nine Map

Pilot Field Trial of the EG95 Vaccine Against Ovine Cystic Echinococcosis in Rio Negro, Argentina: Second Study of Impact.

BACKGROUND: Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is an important zoonotic disease caused by the cestode parasite Echinococcus granulosus. It occurs in many parts of the world where pastoral activities predominate, including the Rio Negro province of Argentina. Although CE control activities have been undertaken in the western regions of Rio Negro for more than two decades, the disease continues to remain prevalent in both the human and livestock animal populations. Vaccination of animal intermediate hosts of CE with the EG95 vaccine may provide a new opportunity to improve the effectiveness of CE contro

Tuberculosis patients at the human-animal interface: Potential zooanthroponotic and zoonotic transmission.

BACKGROUND: Human-to-animal transmission of M. tuberculosis (Mtb) is reported in South Africa but there is a paucity of epidemiological data. The aim of this One Health manuscript is to describe zooanthroponotic exposure of domestic animals to TB patients, virtually all of whom had laboratory confirmed pulmonary Mtb disease. METHODS: This cross-sectional study was nested within two TB contact tracing studies and collected data from 2017 to 2019. TB index patients and their households in three provinces of South Africa were recruited. A questionnaire was administered to households, assessing t

The Animal Variant Classification Guidelines v2: An Update With New Criteria and Improved Clarifications.

The Animal Variant Classification Guidelines (AVCG) were developed to standardize and objectify the classification of putative disease-causing variants. These guidelines are sufficiently reproducible and are used to classify previously published and new disease-causing variants across species. Here, the guidelines are updated (AVCG.v2), based on a three-phase decision process. Overall, four new criteria and seven clarifying comments were added. The number of criteria has increased from 23 to 27, with three new criteria supporting pathogenicity and one new criterion supporting benign classifica

Pathogenicity Comparison Between the Kikwit and Makona Ebola Virus Variants in Rhesus Macaques.

Enhanced virulence and/or transmission of West African Ebola virus (EBOV) variants, which are divergent from their Central African counterparts, are suspected to have contributed to the sizable toll of the recent Ebola virus disease (EVD) outbreak. This study evaluated the pathogenicity and shedding in rhesus macaques infected with 1 of 2 West African isolates (EBOV-C05 or EBOV-C07) or a Central African isolate (EBOV-K). All animals infected with EBOV-C05 or EBOV-C07 died of EVD, whereas 2 of 3 EBOV-K-infected animals died. The viremia level was elevated 10-fold in EBOV-C05-infected animals, c

Stray animal populations and public health in the South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions.

Uncontrolled urban growth in South Mediterranean and the Middle East regions involves city dwellers and stray animals (mainly dogs and cats) creating a dense and downgraded environment, in which irregular street garbage collection disposes sufficient food for survival and proliferation of stray animals. Under such conditions serious public health hazards are expected due to the increase of animal bites, the multiplication of insects and rodents vectors of different viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic agents to which humans are exposed. Traditional national stray animal eradication programs

Interaction between alveolar macrophages and epithelial cells during Mycoplasma pneumoniae infection.

Mycoplasma pneumoniae, as one of the most common pathogens, usually causes upper respiratory tract infections and pneumonia in humans and animals. It accounts for 10% to 40% of community-acquired pneumonia in children. The alveolar epithelial cells (AECs) are the first barrier against pathogen infections, triggering innate immune responses by recruiting and activating immune cells when pathogens invade into the lung. Alveolar macrophages (AMs) are the most plentiful innate immune cells in the lung, and are the first to initiate immune responses with pathogens invasion. The cross-talk between t

Extracellular vesicles and its advances in female reproduction.

Intercellular communication is an essential mechanism for development and maintenance of multicellular organisms. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) were recently described as new players in the intercellular communication. EVs are double-membrane vesicles secreted by cells and are classified according to their biosynthesis, protein markers and morphology. These extracellular vesicles contain bioactive materials such as miRNA, mRNA, protein and lipids. These characteristics permit their involvement in different biological processes. Reproductive physiology is complex and involves constant communicat

Medicine in tropical Australia.

In the unique environment of Australia's tropical north there are endemic diseases inherited from Gondwana, others introduced from the north and from Europe, and a wide range of particularly venomous animals. There is continuing disparity in morbidity and mortality between Aboriginal people and other Australians in tropical areas and elsewhere. This is being addressed by the National Aboriginal Health Strategy, which emphasises social, environmental and economic issues, as well as control and coordination of services by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. While the re-introducti

Assessment of repeated displays: a test of possible mechanisms.

Many animals signal their resource holding potential (RHP) to deter competitors from engaging them in potentially costly fights. Studies of this opponent assessment function have generated important insights into signal design and evolution. In the case of sounds, rate of production is often a salient feature. We used digital video playback to conduct analogous experiments exploring the importance of temporal variation in visual signals. Our study focused on the push-up display of male Jacky dragons Amphibolurus muricatus, an Australian agamid lizard. This stereotyped movement-based signal is

Cuproptosis-driven reprogramming of fibroblast communication by GK is associated with the immune microenvironment in diabetic foot ulcers.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) involve chronic inflammation and impaired healing. Emerging evidence implicates copper-dependent regulated cell death (cuproptosis) in immune microenvironment regulation, but its role in DFU fibroblast-immune crosstalk remains unknown. METHODS: We analyzed scRNA-seq datasets (GSE231643, GSE134431) from DFU/healthy skin. After quality control (25,198 cells retained) and clustering, fibroblasts with elevated cuproptosis scores were identified via ssGSEA. Fibroblast-specific DEGs were screened (Wilcoxon rank-sum; |log2FC|>1, p<0.05) and functionally annota

Giardia, Cryptosporidium and the spectre of zoonosis: the Italian experience from land to sea.

In the last decade, a major concern for the scientific community has been whether infected animals can serve as reservoirs of Giardia and Cryptosporidium infection for humans. Worldwide, prevalence studies and molecular tools have provided insights into the taxonomy and epidemiology of these protozoa in order to better understand such a relation. This paper presents data on the prevalence and molecular genotyping studies from several sample types from land to sea (humans, companion animals, sheep, cattle, goats, wastewaters, surface water, and shellfish) available in Italy. The contribution of
