Hereditary, congenital blindness was studied in 15 Doberman Pinscher pups. The eyes were smaller than normal, and there was complete absence of the anterior chamber, aphakia, retinal detachment, and dysplasia as well as an irregular swelling and partial depigmentation of the retinal pigment epithelial cells. It was concluded that the condition was inherited as a recessive, autosomal trait.

Recent studies of mouse mutant aphakia have implicated the homeobox gene Pitx3 in the survival of substantia nigra dopaminergic neurons, the degeneration of which causes Parkinson's disease. This update discusses the available evidence and provides recommendations regarding when to observe and when and how to treat prophylactically retinal breaks in eyes. These recommendations include eyes with conditions predisposing to rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, such as those with retinal degeneration, aphakia, fellow eyes of a rhegmatogenous retinal detachment, or eyes of patients with inherited vitreoretinopathies.

Based on the data from literature, opinions concerning amblyopia after unilateral, congenital cataract surgery are presented. Problems of visual deprivation syndrome and possibilities of prevention and therapy of amblyopia in unilateral aphakia are discussed. The authors concluded that even the eyes operated very early, in newborns aged a few days, remained often amblyopic.

Epikeratoplasty is a surgical procedure which modifies the surface topography of the cornea by the addition of a tissue lens. This procedure has been applied to patients with keratoconus, myopia, and aphakia. Several large studies of epikeratoplasty have been conducted which suggest that the procedure be limited to keratoconus and aphakic patients who are contact and spectacle lens intolerant.

Continuous wear soft lenses made of Sauflon 85% were used in the treatment of 38 cases of uniocular aphakia. The patients were of all ages, but most of them were aged between 70 and 90 years. The success rate was greater than that achieved by hard contact lenses, especially after senile cataract extraction.

The Copeland lens is easy to insert, requires no intraocular suture or clip for fixation, and is rarely dislodged from its proper position. It has enjoyed long follow-up and wide usage in the United States. Properly managed, its complications are not as formidable as once believed. It remains an acceptable alternative for the intraoperative correction of surgical aphakia.

Although the silicone rubber contact lens (SRCL) is not used frequently, there area number of clinical indications for its use which include paediatric and adult aphakia, decompensated cornea, dry eye, irregular cornea, eyelid defects, corneal ulcer and corneal perforation. The properties of silicone rubber are reviewed and the fitting technique of the SRCL is described.

Variation in the expressivity was studied of the gene for ocular retardation (or) in mice. It is shown that the gene or suppresses with a high expressivity the growth of the optic vesicle in homozygotes, this resulting in anophthalmia and microphthalmia with aphakia. In cases of low expressivity, the gene or inhibits the growth of retina anlage, this leading to microphthalmia with a cataract of the lens. Variation in the expressivity of the gene or is due to an influence of modifier genes.

We describe the case of a monocular 72-year-old man who presented with spontaneous acute visual decrease in the left eye 2 years after uneventful phacoemulsification with intraocular lens (IOL) and standard capsular tension ring (CTR) implantation. Dilated fundoscopy revealed aphakia and complete vitreous luxation of the entire capsular bag-IOL-CTR complex.

PURPOSE: To compare patients who underwent scleral fixation using the Yamane technique with and without simultaneous pars plana vitrectomy.
METHODS: A total of 37 patients were included in the study. Eighteen underwent simultaneous pars plana vitrectomy. In 1995 a population based cross sectional blindness prevalence survey was conducted in Dambatta local government area (LGA). 3596 people were examined.
