Developmental disorder of podocytes and the related renal diseases.

Podocyte is one of the main components of glomerular filtration barrier in the kidney; the loss or dysfunction of podocyte could impair the functions of glomerular filtration barrier, leading to development of various renal diseases. Podocyte is a terminally differentiated cell, and thus does not possess any proliferative properties. Accordingly, its number and contribution to renal function are initially determined by its normal development. Information from the literature and results of our research indicate that genetic factors or prenatal adverse environment could cause developmental retar

Lingual alveolar soft part sarcoma responsive to pazopanib: A case report.

RATIONALE: The multi-targeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors such as cediranib, sunitinib and pazopanib have been reported to be effective for alveolar soft part sarcoma (ASPS). The efficacy of pazopanib for the patient with lingual ASPS has yet to be reported. PATIENT CONCERNS: A 23-year old man presented with articulation disorder and swelling of the tongue. Diagnosis of lingual ASPS was made after incisional biopsy and complete excision of the mass was performed. Three months later, he presented with a protruding mental region. DIAGNOSES: Computed tomography revealed mental region mass and lu

[Changes in gingival blood circulation in patients with provisional fixed acrylic dentures].

The adhesion of oral microorganisms to the surface of teeth and dental restorative materials is often the starting point in the developments of caries and periodontal disease. Formation of biofilm on the surface provisional acrylic bridge is especially quickly and can potentially generate decay or periodontal disease on the teeth. Occlusion trauma and occlusion disorders effects on increasing of injure regional periodontal tissues. Using ultrasonic doppler diagnostics oral mucosal blood flow was measured in 79 patients with periodontitis of medium severity with different hygiene conditions bef

A disturbed sense of self in the psychosis prodrome: linking phenomenology and neurobiology.

Interest in the early phase of psychotic disorders has risen dramatically in recent years. Neurobiological investigations have focused specifically on identifying brain changes associated with the onset of psychosis. The link between these neurobiological findings and the complex phenomenology of the early psychosis period is not well understood. In this article, we re-cast some of these observations, primarily from neuroimaging studies, in the context of phenomenological models of "the self" and disturbance thereof in psychotic illness. Specifically, we argue that disturbance of the basic or

Pathogenesis, early diagnosis, and prophylaxis for chronic hemophilic synovitis.

The most common clinical manifestation of hemophilia is intraarticular bleeding (hemarthrosis). Although any joint can be involved, the articulations most frequently affected are the knees, elbows, and ankles. Hemorrhages may occur spontaneously, or as a result of trauma. Because hemophilia is a genetically determined coagulation disorder, the bleeding incidences may start early in a child's life. After several hemarthroses, hemophilic synovitis will develop and, because of the profusion and fragility of vessels within the tissue, will lead to a vicious cycle of bleeding-synovitis-bleeding. If

Are early grammatical and phonological working memory abilities affected by preterm birth?

UNLABELLED: There have been few investigations of the effects of very immature preterm birth on specific linguistic competencies and phonological working memory at preschool age. Study 1 aimed to investigate early grammatical abilities in very immature healthy preterms, taking into account their cognitive development and biological and social factors. The linguistic and cognitive differences found between preterms and fullterms led to investigate in Study 2 the role of phonological working memory on preterms' grammatical development. Very immature preterm birth resulted to affect grammatical,

Mechanisms of change in interpersonal therapy (IPT).

Although interpersonal therapy (IPT) has demonstrated efficacy for mood and other disorders, little is known about how IPT works. We present interpersonal change mechanisms that we hypothesize account for symptom change in IPT. Integrating relational theory and insights based on research findings regarding stress, social support, and illness, IPT highlights contextual factors thought to precipitate and maintain psychiatric disorders. It frames therapy around a central interpersonal problem in the patient's life, a current crisis or relational predicament that is disrupting social support and i

Audiovisual speech perception deficits in unaffected siblings of children with developmental language disorder.

Siblings of children with developmental language disorder (DLD) often have weaker language skills compared to peers with typical development (TD). However, whether their language-relevant audiovisual skills are also atypical is unknown. Study 1 examined whether siblings use information about a talker's mouth shape during phonemic processing as children with TD do. Study 2 examined siblings' ability to match auditory words with observed word articulations. Only children with TD showed a significant MMN to audiovisual phonemic violations, suggesting that, just like in children with DLD, lip shap

Double bookkeeping and schizophrenia spectrum: divided unified phenomenal consciousness.

Eugen Bleuler, the founder of the concept of schizophrenia, pointed out that psychotic patients were able to live in two disjoint worlds (namely, the social, intersubjective world and the delusional world). He termed this phenomenon "double bookkeeping," but did not provide any conceptual elaboration of this phenomenon or its possible mechanisms. Double bookkeeping has been neglected in mainstream psychiatry, but it has been addressed in recent theoretical work, however mainly concerned with the issue of delusion. In this article, we present clinical material that supports the view that double

[Manual medicine of the spine--indication, diagnostic and therapeutic possibilities].

Manual medicine developed rapidly during the last 40 years and became an integral part of standard medicine. The basic idea behind the methods used is that several acute and chronic disorders the spine and peripheral articulations are caused by functional disturbances in one or more spinal motion segments, and also in peripheral joints, always accompanied by reflectory muscular reactions. These changes must be detected and treated specifically. The diagnosis for manual therapy is always complementary to general medical examination. Knowledge of absolute and relative contraindications is the ba

Understanding inner self-states in eating disorders: preliminary findings from a structured elicitation study.

PURPOSE: Eating disorders are frequently associated with fragmented self-experiences, including harsh self-criticism, shame, and withdrawal, which may be difficult to articulate using standard clinical interviews. Structured elicitation tools may support the exploration of these internal self-states in a clinically meaningful way. METHODS: A total of 14 women receiving treatment for eating disorders at a specialised Italian centre participated in a structured elicitation interview using nine visual-symbolic self-part cards developed for clinical use. For each card, participants provided a num

Foreign Accent Syndrome Caused by a Right Frontotemporal Meningioma: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Foreign accent syndrome (FAS) is a rare speech disorder characterized by the unintended emergence of a foreign-sounding accent. While the precise pathophysiology of this syndrome has not been identified, FAS is thought to result from disruptions in pitch, inflection, stress, and articulation, leading listeners to perceive a foreign accent. It is most commonly associated with stroke, but can also result from traumatic brain injury, demyelinating disease, or neoplasm. METHODS: We present the case of a 59-year-old, right-handed, native English-speaking female from West Virginia who d

18F-FDG PET/CT as a molecular biomarker in the diagnosis of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis associated with prostate cancer and progressive supranuclear palsy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative, multisystem disorder. Its clinical presentation typically consists of progressive focal muscle atrophy and weakness. In addition to motor disorders, the association between ALS and cancer has been researched, such as frontotemporal dementia and progressive supranuclear palsy. The diagnosis is based primarily on the clinical history, physical examination, electrodiagnostic tests (with an EMG needle), and neuroimaging, such as MRI and 18F-FDG PET/CT. PRESENTATION OF THE CASE: A 67-year-old male patient was diagnosed with

Proteomic signature of Temporomandibular Joint Disorders (TMD): Toward diagnostically predictive biomarkers.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) articulates the mandible with the maxilla. Temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD) are dysfunctions of this joint, which range from acute to chronic inflammation, trauma and dislocations, developmental anomalies and neoplasia. TMD manifest as signs and symptoms that involve the surrounding muscles, ligaments, bones, synovial capsule, connective tissue, teeth and innervations proximal and distal to this joint. TMD induce proximal and distal, chronic and acute, dull or intense pain and discomfort, muscle spasm, clicking/popping sounds upon opening and closing of

Alexia and agraphia: contrasting perspectives of J.-M. Charcot and J. Hughlings Jackson.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate 19th-century concepts of cerebral localization for complex mental activities, focusing on alexia and agraphia in published writings of Jean-Martin Charcot (1825-1893) and John Hughlings Jackson (1835-1911). BACKGROUND: In the early 1860 s, Broca's reports on a special role for the left frontal lobe in articulate language ignited frenetic interest in cerebral localization. Disorders of written language (alexia and agraphia) were enmeshed in ensuing discussions of how the brain was organized for language and other complex behaviors. DESIGN/METHODS: Focused review and ana
