Rash causing viral diseases may be transmitted during pregnancy, causing severe congenital disease. Although neurological and psychiatric disorders are common consequences of congenital rubella, children born to women who developed a viral rash during pregnancy do not appear to be at increased risk of these disorders if they were asymptomatic at birth. In a case-control study conducted to evaluate risk factors for ADHD, we found an increased risk of this disorder among children born to women experiencing a viral rash during pregnancy. The viral rash (i.e. measles, varicella, or rubella) was re

To review the experience of a child psychiatric clinic regarding co-morbidity and treatment characteristics of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), a retrospective study was done on patients under 19 years who were attending the clinic and were diagnosed with ADHD. Co-morbidity and treatment characteristics were also studied. ADHD was diagnosed in 25.5% of the patients. Of these, 28.3% had coexistent expressive language disorder and 38.7% coexistent mild mental retardation. A psychostimulant (methylphenidate) was prescribed to 23.6% while antidepressants (primarily im

Motor cortex hyperexcitability in Rett Syndrome (RS) has been ascribed to the failure of an inhibiting system arising from the frontal lobes, a system needed in childhood and early adolescence. It is also presumed that, on a virtually dysfunctional (nonstructural) basis, motor cortex hyperexcitability in ADHD is also due to insufficient frontal lobe inhibition ("lazy frontal lobe"). A series of schematic illustrations is added for the sake of easier comprehension of the presented concept.

Concerns about possible over-diagnosis and over-treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have been prominent in media reports, as have various competing claims about the safety and efficacy of the various treatments for ADHD. Drawing upon the results of the recent National Institutes of Health Consensus Conference, this paper reviews the evidence concerning these controversial areas. Although there do appear to be pockets of over-prescribing in selected communities, the best available evidence suggests that across the United States substantial underdiagnosis continues to oc

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is the most common child psychiatric disorder with a prevalence rate in an Ontario study of 9% in boys and 3% in girls [Szatmari et al., 1989]. This disorder is characterized by problems in the areas of attention, overactivity, impulse control, and distractibility. Strong evidence for a genetic component has been provided from twin, family, and adoption studies [for review see Levy et al., 1998] and molecular genetic studies are in progress by several groups worldwide. The Catechol-O-Methyltransferase (COMT) gene is an interesting candidate for ADHD as

Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a very common pediatric-neuropsychiatric entity of still unknown etiology, and is thus a topic of controversy. A neurological concept is presented in order to attain a better conceptualization of ADHD. This concept focuses on the frontal lobe as the inhibitor of excessive motor activity. This inhibitory function is presumed to be most active during childhood. The concept of a disturbed frontal-motor cortex connection was first developed in view of a completely different and rare disorder of childhood: Rett Syndrome (RS) with smallness of the f

Parents' concerns for their children's behavior were investigated to predict a diagnosis of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in this retrospective comparative study of 245 children, aged 4 through 15 years (mean = 8.1 years), consecutively referred for comprehensive pediatric evaluation of school problems between 1981 and 1992. Concerns identified by parents were categorized (inattention, impulsivity, overactivity) and compared to children's final diagnoses of ADHD to measure their sensitivity, specificity, and predictive value. For 92% of subjects, significant school-related pr

BACKGROUND: Attention deficit disorder with or without hyperactivity (ADD) is present in 49% to 83% of patients with Tourette's syndrome (TS), and up to 50% of children with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) have chronic tics or a family history of chronic tics. Two explanations have been offered for this association: (1) ADHD is part of the pleiotropic expression of the Gilles de la Tourette (Gts) gene(s), or (2) the presence of ADHD in TS is due to ascertainment bias.
METHOD: To avoid ascertainment bias, we examined 338 first-degree relatives of 131 TS probands utilizing a str

Monozygotic and dizygotic twin pairs, in which at least one member of each pair is reading disabled (RD), were assessed for attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Within pair cross-concordances of the RD and ADHD qualitative diagnoses for monozygotic twins were larger than for dizygotic twins, although not significantly so (p less than 0.10). Thus, the data suggest that RD and ADHD may be primarily genetically independent. However, trends in the data and subtype analyses suggest that in some cases RD and ADHD may occur together because of a shared genetic etiology and that a genetica

Follow-up studies of children with attention deficit hyperactive disorder show that they continue to have problems with restlessness, over-activity, impulsive behaviour and inattention, often resulting in serious academic, social and emotional problems in adolescence. Outcome in adulthood generally falls into three groups: fairly normal outcome, persistent attentional, social, emotional and impulse problems, and serious psychiatric and/or social pathology. Factors affecting outcome include characteristics related to the child (for example, health, temperament, IQ) and characteristics of the fa

BACKGROUND: Brain activation differences between 12 control and 12 attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) children (9- to 12-year-olds) were examined on two cognitive tasks during functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
METHOD: Visual selective attention was measured with the visual search of a conjunction target (red triangle) in a field of distracters and response inhibition was measured with a go/no-go task.
RESULTS: There were limited group differences in the selective attention task, with control children showing significantly greater intensity of activation in a small ar

The diagnostic criteria for attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) reflect the behavioural and functional outcomes of cognitive processes. Historically they have been based on external observations and lack specificity: clinical cohorts of children meeting diagnostic criteria show that around 40% may also meet diagnostic criteria for oppositional defiant disorder (ODD). We have proposed a clinical model to explain this: the Mental Effort Reward Imbalances model of ADHD (MERIM). This model views the lower levels of task completion that underlie several of the diagnostic criteria for AD

To evaluate attentional processes to visual stimuli that do not require motor response, a study with evoked potentials was carried out on 17 children with attention deficit disorder predominantly inattentive (ADDH-I) and 15 controls between the ages of 7 and 11 years. The latency and localization of sources of the early visual evoked potentials P100 and N100 were analyzed during the performance of a visual oddball task (20% horizontal and 80% vertical lines) where the vertical lines did not require motor response. The results indicate that ADDH-I group process visual information that does not

While teachers have traditionally used the interesting objects to increase student attention in the classroom, evidence supporting the effectiveness of this method is lacking. The present study investigated the influence of different stimulus attributes for typical developing students and for students with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and dyslexia. Thirty children with ADHD, 30 children with dyslexia, and 30 typical developing students were tested using a measuring tool that was constructed by the authors to assess their sustained attention and selective attention on the geo

BACKGROUND: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) has been proposed as a potential non-pharmacological intervention for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). While evidence from pediatric populations is growing, the effects of tDCS in adults with ADHD remain insufficiently characterized, increasing recognition of ADHD as a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition with persistent functional impairments.
OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aimed to evaluate the effects of tDCS in adults with ADHD across clinical, cognitive, and neurophysiological outcome domains.
METHODS: Six el

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) may lead to depression, but little is known about its underlying mechanisms. We examined whether clinical factors (irritability, anxiety), cognitive-affective processes (emotion recognition, response inhibition, working memory, sustained attention), and negative thought patterns (external locus of control, negative cognitive style) mediated ADHD-depression associations across development and whether these pathways differ by sex.
METHOD: Analyses were performed in the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC) and the Twi

BACKGROUND: Psychotherapy for adults with ADHD is still underutilized in Germany and worldwide. Only a small percentage of these patients receive psychotherapy as recommended in the guidelines. Unguided digital interventions may help to lessen this treatment gap.
METHODS: An open-label, exploratory randomized controlled trial was conducted (trial registration: DRKS00033320). Adults with confirmed ADHD were recruited at six study centers in Germany, as well as via social media, and were randomly allotted to receive either the intervention (treatment as usual + app) or the control condition (tr
