Dictionary Learning Methods for Brain Activity Mapping with MEG Data.

A central goal in many brain studies is the identification of those brain regions that are activated during an observation window that may correspond to a motor task, a stimulus, or simply a resting state. While functional MRI is currently the most commonly employed modality for such task, methods based on the electromagnetic activity of the brain are valuable alternatives because of their excellent time resolution and of the fact that the measured signals are directly related to brain activation and not to a secondary effect such as the hemodynamic response. In this work we focus on the MEG m

Impact of hernia sac in congenital diaphragmatic hernia: Associations with morbidity and mortality.

INTRODUCTION: The impact of hernia sac (HS+) on outcomes in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) when accounting for defect size is unknown. In a multicenter analysis, considering defect size, we aim to delineate the association of HS+ and morbidity and mortality. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of CDH Study Group (2007-2024) data was performed. Demographics, defect characteristics, morbidity, and mortality were abstracted. Multilevel regression and parallel Bayesian analysis were performed on 80 % of the data, tested on 20 % hold-out data, and reported in area under the curve (AUC). RESU

Effects of concurrent transcranial direct current stimulation on human motor skill learning: A systematic review and Bayesian meta-analysis.

Motor learning is important throughout the human lifespan for the acquisition, refinement, and preservation of motor skills, and for regaining functional abilities through rehabilitation training. Therefore, it is essential to develop strategies and paradigms to facilitate motor learning. Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can be applied concurrently with motor practice with the aim of augmenting learning-related processes. Here, we meta-analyzed the effects of tDCS applied during motor practice on core features of motor skill learning, namely speed and accuracy, based on 73 eligib

A Bayesian Meta-Analysis of Lexical Priming and Reaction Time in Children With and Without Developmental Language Disorder.

PURPOSE: Children with developmental language disorder (DLD) exhibit linguistic difficulties that may stem from deficits in predictive processing. Several studies report impaired lexical priming in DLD groups compared to age-matched groups with typical language development (TLD). However, other studies report compensatory enhancement of lexical-semantic processing, leading to larger priming effects in DLD. METHOD: We used Bayesian meta-analysis to examine lexical priming and overall reaction time (RT) differences in age-matched groups of children with DLD and TLD (k = 19, m = 56, N = 360 DLD,

Advancing neurodynamic understanding of Bayesian models of chronic pain: Evidence, perspectives, and new insights.

Chronic pain is a prevalent and complex condition that significantly impacts individuals' quality of life. Understanding its neurobiology and clinical phenomenology requires the integration of cognitive-behavioral and sensory-motor frameworks. Traditional models inadequately address the multilevel and transnosological aspects of chronic pain, particularly the interplay between interoception and predictive coding. Recent neurocomputational approaches present the theoretical basis for a Bayesian model of chronic pain that unifies interoception and predictive processing. However, providing empiri

Cumulative environmental burden and neurodegenerative disease mortality: a national ecological study in the United States.

Neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs) represent a growing cause of mortality and disability among aging populations worldwide. However, the relationship between cumulative, multidomain environmental exposures, and NDD mortality remains poorly characterized. This study aimed to examine the association between comprehensive environmental quality and NDD mortality in the United States. We used the environmental quality index (EQI) from 2000 to 2005 to characterize cumulative environmental exposure. Associations between EQI quintiles and NDD mortality, including dementia, Parkinson's disease (PD), amy

Eco-epidemiological clustering and cluster-wise forecasting of dengue in Mexico, 2020-2025.

Dengue transmission varies markedly across Mexico, posing challenges for short-term operational planning. We propose a two-layer framework that (i) constructs incidence-free eco-epidemiological clusters for the 32 Mexican states and (ii) produces one-week-ahead forecasts of weekly dengue cases at the cluster level with quantified uncertainty, expressed through P10-P90 prediction bands. Our analysis covers 283 epidemiological weeks per state from 2020 to 2025, with all 32 states retained after meteorological quality control. Clusters are identified using full-covariance Gaussian mixture models

Autochthonous transmission patterns of dengue virus serotype 2 in Italy: evidence from outbreaks in 2024.

BACKGROUNDIn 2024, multiple transmission foci of dengue virus serotype 2 (DENV-2) were detected across four Italian regions, resulting in the largest number of autochthonous cases ever recorded in mainland Europe.AIMWe aimed to characterise DENV-2 transmission patterns in Italy in 2024.METHODSWe analysed 296 locally acquired cases with symptom onset between 31 July and 31 October. Using detailed spatiotemporal data, we reconstructed transmission chains between cases with well-documented exposure sites, applying a Bayesian framework. We estimated the generation time and net reproduction number

Phylodynamic analysis of Salmonella Enteritidis ST183 in Aotearoa New Zealand finds no evidence for introduction via European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus).

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is the second most common serovar causing human salmonellosis in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). Sequence type (ST)183, which includes phage types 9a and 11, was the second most frequently isolated S. Enteritidis strain from human cases between 2020 and 2023. This ST is considered endemic in NZ as well as in mainland Europe and Great Britain, where the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is a recognized wildlife reservoir. Hedgehogs were introduced to NZ in the late 19th century; however, their role in the ecology of ST183

Rethinking TNM: Tumor deposit-based prognostic models may improve N-staging in colorectal cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Tumor deposits are an important negative prognostic factor for long-term oncological outcomes in colorectal cancer patients, independent of lymph node status. Several novel models have been proposed to further integrate tumor deposits into the TNM-staging system, but their comparative performance remains unclear. The aim of this study was to identify, compare and validate novel prognostic models incorporating tumor deposits for N-stage classification. METHODS: A scoping literature review identified novel prognostic models that incorporated tumor deposits or tumor deposit count i

Advanced hybrid intelligence evaluation of nanomedicine delivery to various organs using machine learning and adaptive tree structured Parzen estimator.

We have examined the efficiency of drug delivery for targeted therapy by theoretical models. Machine learning strategy was tested to analyze the drug delivery of nanomedicines to the desired sites for efficient treatment. The inputs to the models are properties of nanoparticles, tumor model, cancer type, administration dose of drug, while the outputs are delivery efficiency of drug in various organs. The ML models employed include Elastic Net Regression (EN), K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN), Polynomial Regression (PR), and an ensemble method using Boosting to leverage the strengths of these individu

A conceptual and computational framework for modeling the complex, adaptive dynamics of epidemics: The case of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in Mexico.

In the quest to ensure adequate preparedness for health emergencies caused by infectious disease pandemics, there is a need for tools that can address the myriad relevant questions related to the spread and trajectory of pandemics. A hybrid intelligence model that combines human and artificial intelligence may provide a viable solution, as it can process data from models that comprehensively integrate contextual and direct factors, effectively mimicking the social processes surrounding transmission while incorporating human interpretation to enhance our understanding of pandemics. Spatial interpolation of health and demographic variables: Predicting malaria indicators with and without covariates.

Accurate mapping and disaggregation of key health and demographic risk factors have become increasingly important for disease surveillance, which can reveal geographical social inequalities for improved health interventions and for monitoring progress on relevant Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Household surveys like the Demographic and Health Surveys have been widely used as a proxy for mapping SDG-related household characteristics. However, there is no consensus on the workflow to be used, and different methods have been implemented with varying complexities. This study aims to compare

Complex multiannual cycles of Mycoplasma pneumoniae: Persistence and the role of stochasticity.

The epidemiological dynamics of Mycoplasma pneumoniae is characterized by poorly understood complex multiannual cycles. The origins of these cycles have long been debated, and multiple explanations of varying complexity have been suggested. Using Bayesian methods, we fit a dynamical model to half a century of M. pneumoniae surveillance data from Denmark (1958 to 1995, 2010 to 2025) and uncover a parsimonious explanation for the persistent cycles, based on the theory of quasicycles. The period of the multiannual cycle (approx. 5 y in Denmark) is explained by susceptible replenishment due, prima

COVID-19 mortality and nutrition through predictive modeling and optimization based on grid search.

Since 2019, humanity has been suffering from the negative impact of COVID-19, and the virus did not stop in its usual state but began to pivot to become more harmful until it reached its form now, which is the omicron variant. Therefore, in an attempt to reduce the risk of the virus, which has caused nearly 6 million deaths to this day, it is serious to focus on one of the most important causes of disease resistance, which is nutrition. It has been proven recently that death rates dangerously depend on what enters the human stomach from fat, protein, or even healthy vegetables. This study aims
