Background/Objectives: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common vestibular disorders and is characterized by transient but very severe vertigo, increasing fall risk, especially in older people. While many risk factors have been reported, there are still contradicting papers and evidence from large-scale studies remains limited. Methods: This nationwide, nested case-control study utilized Korean National Health Insurance Service-Health Screening Cohort data to investigate possible risk factors for BPPV. In particular, it examined the association between prior head t

The vestibular system connects the inner ear to the midbrain and subcortical structures and can affect cognition. Patients with vertigo often experience cognitive symptoms such as attention deficits, memory problems, and spatial perception difficulties. This study aimed to explore the cognitive impairments associated with Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) and Meniere's Disease (MD). A non-experimental group comparison design was used with 107 participants divided into three groups: Group I (clinically normal), Group II (BPPV), and Group III (MD). Participants completed a questionnair

There are currently different groups of drugs for the pharmacotherapy of vertigo, nystagmus and cerebellar disorders: antiemetics; anti-inflammatories, antimenieres, and antimigraineous medications and antidepressants, anticonvulsants, aminopyridines as well as acetyl-DL-leucine. In acute unilateral vestibulopathy, corticosteroids improve the recovery of peripheral vestibular function, but currently there is not sufficient evidence for a general recommendation. There is insufficient evidence to support the view that 16 mg t. i. d. or 48 mg t. i. d. betahistine has an effect in Menière's diseas

We report a 64-year-old right-handed man who presented with a hypoplasia of bilateral internal carotid arteries (ICAs). The patient complained of a vertigo and was diagnosed as having a benign paroxysmal positional vertigo. Upon neurological examination, he was completely free from neurological deficits. MR angiogram revealed an occlusion of both ICAs. On conventional angiogram, the right ICA was occluded about 3 cm distal from its origin, and the left ICA was occluded at the precavernous portion. There was an abundant collateral blood flow to the frontal, temporal and parietal lobes through t

INTRODUCTION: Dizziness is a common complaint among patients; however, a lack of valid data concerning age and gender distribution of dizziness disorders among children under the age of 15 years can preclude effective diagnosis and treatment. The goal of this study was to describe the prevalence and gender distribution of three classical peripheral vestibular disorders; benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), vestibular neuritis (VN), and Menière's disease (MD) as well as unspecific dizziness (UV) in children between 0 and 15 years of age, using state sponsored health insurance data.

Patients with vestibular vertigo syndromes often suffer from anxiety and depression, whereas patients with psychiatric disorders often experience subjective unsteadiness, dizziness, or vertigo. Thus, it has been hypothesized that the vestibular system may be interlinked with the emotion processing systems. The aim of the current study was to evaluate this hypothesis by correlating vestibular and psychiatric symptoms with the course of the disease over 1 year. This interdisciplinary, prospective, longitudinal study included a total of 68 patients with acute vestibular vertigo syndromes. Four su

Migraine equivalents are a group of periodic and paroxysmal neurologic diseases. Because headache is not a prominent symptom, the diagnosis might be challenging. The objective of the study was to evaluate the frequency and outcome of migraine equivalents. This was a retrospective study. We included benign paroxysmal torticollis of infancy, benign paroxysmal vertigo of infancy, abdominal migraine, cyclic vomiting, aura without migraine, and confusional migraine. We evaluated the frequency of events, treatment, and outcome. Out of 674 children with headache, 38 (5.6%) presented with migraine equ

BACKGROUND & OBJECTIVE: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is a leading cause of vertigo and has been loosely associated with osteoporosis, vitamin D deficiency, and broader metabolic dysfunction. Emerging evidence suggests that BPPV may relate to systemic conditions beyond the vestibular system. However, limited research has explored whether individuals with BPPV have increased rates of hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), or osteoporosis. The objective of this study was to examine the association between BPPV and hypothyroidism, diabetes mellitus (DM), hyperte

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to consolidate and condense the available evidence about the potential association between vestibular diseases and cognitive impairment.
DATA SOURCES AND METHODS: A systematic search was conducted on four English databases (PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library) from the time of library construction to March 2024. The study incorporated various keywords such as "vestibular disorders," "vertigo," "dizziness," "Meniere's disease," "benign paroxysmal positional vertigo," "vestibular migraine," "vestibular neuritis," "labyrinthitis," "bilateral

Rehabilitation for individuals after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) or concussion requires emphasis on both cognitive and physical rest, with a gradual return to activity including sports. As the client becomes more active, the rehabilitation professional should pay close attention to symptoms associated with mTBI, such as headache, dizziness, nausea, and difficulty concentrating. The systematic approach to return to play provided by the Berlin Consensus Statement on Concussion in Sport can apply to adults with mTBI. This protocol calls for gradually increasing the intensity of physical ac

Systemic vasculitides constitute a heterogeneous group of diseases with frequent overlapping in their clinical findings and the size of the vessels involved. They may be primary or secondary to other diseases. Their common characteristic is the inflammation of blood vessels, giving rise to ischaemia. In the present article, we have reviewed the most common audiovestibular features that may be observed in patients with systemic vasculitides. Audiovestibular manifestations may be the first symptom of a systemic vasculitis. Audiological manifestations include sudden hearing loss and progressive s

OBJECTIVES: Lindsay-Hemenway syndrome (LHS) is characterized by an acute unilateral vestibular loss followed by ipsilateral posterior semicircular canal (PSC) benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV). Despite its clinical relevance, comparative data between LHS, isolated acute unilateral vestibulopathy (AUVP), and idiopathic PSC BPPV are uncommon. This work aims to compare vestibular function and clinical outcomes in patients diagnosed with LHS, isolated AUVP, and idiopathic PSC BPPV.
METHODS: A multicenter longitudinal study was conducted between 2018 and 2025, enrolling 98 patients divid

CONCLUSION: Vertigo attacks in patients with benign recurrent vertigo (BRV) cannot be distinguished from those in patients with Meniere's disease on the basis of duration, triggers or associated symptoms (other than auditory). A subset of BRV is associated with migraine.
OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether clinical features of vertigo attacks can distinguish patients with BRV from those with Meniere's disease and whether subtypes of BRV can be identified.
METHODS: A structured interview was used to analyze features in patients with BRV, i.e. those who have normal audiograms and caloric test re

OBJECTIVES: Dizziness is a common presenting complaint to the emergency department (ED), and emergency physicians (EPs) consider these presentations a priority for decision support. Assessing for nystagmus and defining its features are important steps for any acute dizziness decision algorithm. The authors sought to describe nystagmus documentation in routine ED care to determine if nystagmus assessments might be an important target in decision support efforts.
METHODS: Medical records from ED visits for dizziness were captured as part of a surveillance study embedded within an ongoing popula
