BACKGROUND: Tecovirimat (ST-246) is being developed as an antiviral therapeutic for smallpox for use in the event of an accidental or intentional release. The last reported case of smallpox was 1978 but the potential for use of variola virus for biowarfare has renewed interest in smallpox antiviral therapeutics.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Dyspepsia affects up to 40% of the general population and significantly reduces quality of life. A small proportion of patients have peptic ulcer disease as cause and this can be treated empirically with Helicobacter pylori eradication therapy in those that are infected. Approximately 20% have gastro-oesophageal reflux disease and this can be effectively treated with proton pump inhibitor therapy. Patients who remain symptomatic may warrant an endoscopy, but most will have functional dyspepsia. Treatment of functional dyspepsia remains a challenge.

Mineralisation capability was studied in the 2,6-dichlorobenzamide (BAM)-degrading Aminobacter sp. MSH1 under growth-arrested conditions. Cells were starved in mineral salts (MS) solution or groundwater before (14)C-labelled BAM (0.1mM) was added. Starting from a nonracemic planar-chiral arene tricarbonyl chromium complex, an epimer of the bioactive marine diterpene helioporin B was synthesized in a highly stereoselective fashion. The stereostructure of the product (11-epi-helioporin B) corresponds to that of other serrulatane-type natural products. In a key step of the synthesis, 2-lithioacetonitrile undergoes conjugate nucleophilic addition to an unsaturated complex. A fatality due to ingestion of the antidepressant drug moclobemide is reported. Moclobemide is a selective and reversible inhibitor of monoamine oxidase type A. Previous reports have suggested that it is a safe drug even when taken in large quantities.
