BACKGROUND: Biliary tract malignancies are uncommon and few population-based studies are available.
METHODS: This nationwide population-based study in Iceland included all patients diagnosed with intra- and extrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder and ampullary cancer from 1984 to 2012. Patients were identified through the Icelandic Cancer Registry. Clinical information was obtained from patient records.

We here report on a case of metachronous multicentric carcinomas of the biliary tract treated 3 times with curative surgery over 23 years. A 28-year-old woman underwent cholecystectomy because of papillary carcinoma of the gallbladder. As experience with laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) has increased, so have the number and variety of complications. We report a case of choledocholithiasis caused by migration of a surgical clip applied during LC. A 57-year-old Japanese man who had undergone LC 6 years previously was referred to our hospital with pruritus and jaundice. We report a rare adult case of gallbladder agenesis with no other biliary tract abnormality. The patient was a 29-year-old man with pain in the right upper-quadrant of the abdomen, and vomiting.
