Increases in the Rate of Neisseria gonorrhoeae Among Gay, Bisexual and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men-Findings From the Sexually Transmitted Disease Surveillance Network 2010-2015.

BACKGROUND: Inequalities in Neisseria gonorrhoeae (gonorrhea) burden by sexual minority status in the United States are difficult to quantify. Sex of sex partner is not routinely collected for reported cases. Population estimates of men who have sex with men (MSM) necessary to calculate case rates have not been available until recently. For these reasons, trends in reported gonorrhea rates among MSM have not been described across multiple jurisdictions. METHODS: We estimated of the number of MSM cases reported in 6 jurisdictions continuously participating in the STD Surveillance Network 2010-

Association between serosorting and bacterial sexually transmitted infection among HIV-negative men who have sex with men at an urban lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender health center.

BACKGROUND: Serosorting, selecting sex partners of the same HIV status, may be associated with increased risk of sexually transmitted infection (STI). We examined the association between unprotected anal intercourse (UAI) with a seroconcordant partner and STIs among HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) at an urban lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender STI clinic. METHODS: Subjects reported how they assessed their most recent sex partner's HIV status. Those who reported getting tested together or asking were classified as known concordant; those who determined their partner's serosta

Changing patterns of infections in patients with AIDS: a study of 279 autopsies of prison inmates and nonincarcerated patients at a university hospital in eastern Texas, 1984-1993.

Reports on autopsies of 279 persons infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) were reviewed retrospectively to determine changes in survival rates and infections and to identify differences between prison inmates and nonincarcerated patients. The 78 cases from 1984 through 1988 were compared with 201 from 1989 through 1993, on the basis of use of antiretroviral therapy and (after 1988) prophylaxis against Pneumocystis carinii pneumonia (PCP). Risk factors for HIV infection were homosexuality/bisexuality (30%), injection drug use (IDU; 22%), transfusion (5%), heterosexual contact (4%), a…

Characteristics associated with frequent sexually transmitted infection (STI) testing in a community-based sample of gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM), United Kingdom, 2024.

In the UK, gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) at risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) are recommended quarterly testing, but it is not known how many are following this recommendation. We described prevalence and correlates of frequent STI testing amongst GBMSM. We analysed data from the community-based Reducing Inequalities in Sexual Health (RiiSH) online survey of GBMSM, with recruitment in November-December 2024 via social media and dating apps. Participants were UK residents aged ≥16 years reporting sex with a man in the previous year. We described frequen

A Decade of HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) Cascade Monitoring: National Trends and Persistent Gaps in PrEP Use Among Gay, Bisexual and Queer Men and Non-Binary People in Australia.

We have monitored Australia's maturing HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) program for the past decade, providing a unique view of long-term implementation among gay, bisexual and queer men and non-binary people. Using two national surveys, the GBQ + Community Periodic Surveys (GCPS, 2014-2023, N = 78,378) and the PrEPARE Project (2017-2023, N = 5,278), we constructed and iteratively refined cascades to monitor PrEP suitability, awareness, use, and service engagement. The PrEPARE cascade also included willingness, provider engagement and psychosexual benefits of PrEP. By 2023, both cascades sh

Prevalence, Patterns and Implications of Chemsex Substance Use Among Gay and Bisexual Men Who Have Sex With Men: A Cohort-Collaboration Between the Swiss HIV Cohort Study and the SwissPrEPared Study.

INTRODUCTION: Global awareness to chemsex, a specific form of sexualized psychoactive substance ("chems") use among gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (gbMSM), is increasing. We aimed to assess prevalence, patterns and implications of "chems" use on chemsex-related outcomes. METHODS: We conducted a Swiss-wide longitudinal study using individual-level data from April 2019 to December 2024 of adult gbMSM with HIV, enrolled in the Swiss HIV Cohort Study (SHCS), or taking HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), enrolled in SwissPrEPared. Characteristics associated with attending community-based versus clinic-based HIV testing services among overseas-born gay, bisexual, and men who have sex with men in Sydney, Australia.

BACKGROUND: Overseas-born gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) experience higher HIV notification rates compared with Australian-born GBMSM. This disparity is perpetuated by delayed access to HIV testing and biomedical prevention driven by a range of factors including Medicare eligibility, language and cultural barriers, and unfamiliarity with the health system. Community-based services offer an alternative pathway to HIV testing that may better serve migrant GBMSM facing challenges accessing mainstream healthcare settings. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study c

PrEP in the key population community: A qualitative study of perspectives on pre-exposure prophylaxis by gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men and female sex workers in Kigali, Rwanda.

Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) and cisgender female sex workers (FSW) are increasingly and disproportionately impacted by HIV in sub-Saharan Africa, yet current PrEP care models in this region are not optimized for these communities. Limited data exist describing experiences and preferences of GBMSM and FSW with respect to accessing and using PrEP. We conducted qualitative, semi-structured interviews with GBMSM and FSW recruited from three health centers and seven community organizations in Kigali, Rwanda. Data were analyzed using a mixed deductive and inductive appr

"Taking Charge and Being Responsible": A Qualitative Study of Meaning Making and Motivations for Preexposure Prophylaxis Adherence Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Sexual Minoritized Men Engaged in Alcohol Misuse in Kentucky.

Our qualitative study explores meaning making and motivation for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) adherence and engagement among gay, bisexual, and other sexual minoritized men (GBSMM) who misuse alcohol. Nineteen interviews with 10 participants who screened positive for harmful alcohol consumption (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test scores > 8) indicated that PrEP meaning making contributes to mental well-being, serving as a stabilizing ritual. Motivation for engagement included a commitment to proactive health management and personal and community safety. In the analysis, meaning making

DoxyPEP Implementation Preferences for Bacterial STD Prevention Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex with Men Living With and Without HIV in Los Angeles: A Mixed-Methods Approach.

Bacterial sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) remain prominent in the United States among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Doxycycline for post-exposure prophylaxis (DoxyPEP) is a regimen by which the antibiotic doxycycline is taken after sex to prevent bacterial STDs, such as, chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis. Despite this, this study was conducted because there are a limited number of publications that describe GBMSM's knowledge of, and interest in, taking DoxyPEP and preferences regarding its implementation. We conducted a mixed-methods study between November 2

Identifying Effective Components of a Social Marketing Campaign to Improve Engagement With Express Sexual Health Services Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men: Case Study.

BACKGROUND: Little is known about how best to reach people with social marketing messages promoting use of clinical HIV and sexually transmitted infection (STI) services. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated a multiplatform, digital social marketing campaign intended to increase use of HIV/STI testing, treatment, and prevention services among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) at an LGBTQ+ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and/or questioning) community health center. METHODS: We evaluated engagement with a social marketing campaign launched by Open Door Health, the only L

Gay, bisexual, and queer men's confidence in the Undetectable equals Untransmittable HIV prevention message: longitudinal qualitative analysis of the sexual decision-making of pre-exposure prophylaxis users over time.

BACKGROUND: Our objective was to understand what gay, bisexual, and queer men (GBQM) who had experience using pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) thought about the 'Undetectable equals Untransmittable' (U=U) message and how it informed their sexual decision-making over time. METHODS: We conducted annual longitudinal qualitative interviews (2020-22) with 17 current or former PrEP users as part of a mixed-methods implementation science study examining barriers and facilitators to PrEP awareness, access, and adherence. Over 3years, 47 interviews were conducted with GBQM in Ontario, Canada. Interview

"They have their own people": Emotional connections, community belonging, and Chinese gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) college students' needs for sexual health support.

Gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) college students in China have unique sexual health challenges, including a higher risk of HIV infection, stigma and discrimination against LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) population, and limited access to LGBTQ-affirmative sexual health support. Nonetheless, previous research or policymaking has rarely addressed the students' needs for sexual health support from their perspectives. This study aims to explore GBMSM college students' perceptions and attitudes to current sexual health resources, the challenges they

Evaluation of Public Health Contact Tracing for Mpox Among Gay, Bisexual, and Other Men Who Have Sex With Men-10 US Jurisdictions, May 17-July 31, 2022.

Objectives. To examine the potential impact of contact tracing to identify contacts and prevent mpox transmission among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) as the outbreak expanded. Methods. We assessed contact tracing outcomes from 10 US jurisdictions before and after access to the mpox vaccine was expanded from postexposure prophylaxis for persons with known exposure to include persons at high risk for acquisition (May 17-June 30, 2022, and July 1-31, 2022, respectively). Results. Overall, 1986 mpox cases were reported in MSM from included jurisdictions (240 before expan

HIV treatment-as-prevention and its effect on incidence of HIV among cisgender gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Australia: a 10-year longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Although HIV treatment-as-prevention reduces individual-level HIV transmission, population-level effects are unclear. We aimed to investigate whether treatment-as-prevention could achieve population-level reductions in HIV incidence among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBM) in Australia's most populous states, New South Wales and Victoria. METHODS: TAIPAN was a longitudinal cohort study using routine health record data extracted from 69 health services that provide HIV diagnosis and care to GBM in New South Wales and Victoria, Australia. A mixed methods investigation of the relationship between blood donor policy, interest in donation, and willingness to donate among gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men in Ontario, Canada.

BACKGROUND: As of 2019, men who have sex with men (MSM) in Canada are ineligible to donate blood if they have had oral or anal sex with another man in the last 3 months. Deferral policies targeting MSM are largely interpreted as unjust by gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM) - shaping their desire to donate blood and engage with blood operators. This mixed methods study explores interest in blood donation among GBMSM as well as willingness (and eligibility) to donate under four different deferral policies. METHODS: We surveyed 447 GBMSM who were recruited from the Ontari
