KBN2201 Attenuates High-Fat Diet-Induced Adipose Tissue Expansion and Body Weight Gain in Male Mice.

Obesity is characterized by pathological adipose tissue expansion and dysregulated energy homeostasis. In this study, we examined whether KBN2201 attenuates high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obesity-associated phenotypes and whether these effects are accompanied by changes in appetite-regulatory markers. C57BL/6J mice were fed a normal chow diet or HFD and orally administered vehicle or KBN2201 (20 mg/kg/day) for 12 weeks. In male mice, KBN2201 reduced HFD-induced body weight gain, adipose tissue accumulation, and adipocyte hypertrophy. KBN2201 was also associated with lower cage-level caloric intak…

Dlk1-deficient mice achieve puberty despite low body weight and low levels of leptin and kisspeptin.

Loss-of-function mutations in DLK1, encoding Delta Like Non-Canonical Notch Ligand 1, have been linked to central precocious puberty (CPP) a … ective central nervous system (CNS) deletion of Dlk1, compared with control mice. Puberty onset and body weight were assessed, along with potential mediators of pubertal timing, including leptin and kisspeptin. Dlk1KO females reached puberty at the same age as controls, despite lower body weight. Dlk1KO males had delayed preputial separation but, like females …

Elevated body weight in Mexico: Structural drivers, policy challenges, and the limits of health policy reform.

Mexico has one of the world's highest prevalence rates of elevated body weight among adults, with more than one-third of children and adolescents also affected. These patterns create major challenges for life expectancy, healthcare system sustainability, and long-term economic productivity. This article examines current patterns of elevated body weight in Mexico and their links with chronic disease. It explores the sociohistorical, political-economic, and cultural factors that have shaped these trends and critically evaluates President Claudia Sheinbaum's Healthy Republic Plan as a policy fram…

Augmenting Body Weight Support Rehabilitation with Mixed Reality to Enhance Lower Limb Functional Recovery Post-Stroke.

Traditional stroke rehabilitation can be repetitive and disengaging, leading to reduced patient adherence and slower recovery. Technology such as Mixed Reality (MR) offers a novel approach to rehabilitation by transforming repetitive exercises into immersive interactive experiences. This study investigates the use of MR to enhance lower limb rehabilitation in subacute stroke patients by integrating immersive exercises with a dynamic body weight support system (the Vector Gait and Safety System). Our system features interactive tasks, including stepping exercises, obstacle avoidance, hand-eye c…

Effects of florfenicol on body weight, intestinal inflammatory response, intestinal fluid metabolism and microorganisms in broilers.

IMPORTANCE: Although antibiotics can prevent and treat diseases, their overuse can be harmful. Despite this, the effects of orally administered florfenicol on intestinal health in broilers are unclear. OBJECTIVE: This study examined oral florfenicol's effects on intestinal function in broilers to guide its clinical use. METHODS: One hundred and twenty Arbor Acres broilers (8-d-old) were divided randomly into the control (N) and florfenicol groups (F). The broilers in group F were fed 100 mg/kg body weight florfenicol for seven days. On day 15, the broilers were euthanized and sampled to anal…

Beyond traditional metrics: evaluating the triglyceride-total cholesterol-body weight index (TCBI) in cardiovascular risk assessment.

BACKGROUND: Cardiovascular disease (CVD), a non-communicable condition, stands as the primary cause of death globally. This study seeks to evaluate the predictive power of atherogenic indices, which are recognized for their influence on CVD, alongside a newly developed index encompassing all three principal risk factors for CVD, referred to as the triglyceride-total cholesterol-body weight index (TCBI). The primary outcomes evaluated include both the incidence and mortality rates associated with CVD. METHODS: A prospective cohort study was conducted on Mashhad stroke and heart atherosclerotic…

Metformin triggers a kidney GDF15-dependent area postrema axis to regulate food intake and body weight.

Metformin, the most widely prescribed medication for obesity-associated type 2 diabetes (T2D), lowers plasma glucose levels, food intake, and body weight in rodents and humans, but the mechanistic site(s) of action remain elusive. Metformin increases plasma growth/differentiation factor 15 (GDF15) levels to regulate energy balance, while GDF15 administration activates GDNF family receptor α-like (GFRAL) that is highly expressed in the area postrema (AP) and the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) of the hindbrain to lower food intake and body weight. However, the tissue-specific contribution o…

Association of prepregnancy body mass index and gestational weight gain on severity of optic nerve hypoplasia.

BACKGROUND: Optic nerve hypoplasia (ONH) is a birth defect of unknown etiology and a leading cause of visual impairment in developed countries. Recent studies suggest that factors of deprivation and exposures of poor nutritional status, such as lower gestational weight gain (GWG), may be associated with increased risk of ONH. The present study describes the prenatal features of mothers of ONH cases, including prepregnancy BMI and GWG, and the associations with clinical features of disease severity. METHODS: Retrospective study of prenatal records for cases of ONH enrolled in a research regist

Associations between body mass index, weight loss and overall survival in patients with advanced lung cancer.

BACKGROUND: Weight loss (WL) has been associated with shorter survival in patients with advanced cancer, while obesity has been associated with longer survival. Integrating body mass index (BMI) and WL provides a powerful prognostic tool but has not been well-studied in lung cancer patients, particularly in the setting of clinical trials. METHODS: We analysed patient data (n = 10 128) from 63 National Cancer Institute sponsored advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and small cell lung cancer (SCLC) trials. Risk matrices were created using BMI and WL percentage, which were divided into '
