We performed pre- and 2-3.5-year postoperative isokinetic knee-testing to assess thigh muscle function in 9 patients undergoing bilateral femoral lengthening by callotasis. The median femoral lengthening was 17 (12-18) percent. The angular testing velocities were 60 degrees/sec (strength) and 180 degrees/sec (endurance). Only small changes in muscle strength were found postoperatively. Except for peak torque at 60 degrees/sec on the last-operated side (median 2 years follow-up), there were no differences between the pre- and postoperative isokinetic measurements. The authors have studied overgrowth or diminished growth seen in 54 femora lengthened surgically by a one-stage procedure between 1963 and 1979. Thirty six cases were of poliomyelitis. Fifteen adult patients with an unstable ununited fracture of the distal third of the radius and severe radial deviation deformity resembling a radial club hand were retrospectively reviewed at an average of 25 months after operative treatment. BACKGROUND: In vivo assessment of bone density is insufficient for the evaluation of osteoporosis in patients. A more complete diagnostic tool for the determination of bone quality is needed. Micro-computed tomography imaging allows a non-destructive method for evaluating cancellous bone micro-architecture. However, lengthened exposure to ionizing radiation prevents patients to be imaged by such a system.
