OBJECTIVE: Children with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) often suffer from poor bone growth and impaired bone health. Humanin is a cytoprotective factor expressed in bone and other tissues and we hypothesized that humanin levels are suppressed in conditions of chronic inflammation. To address this, humanin levels were analyzed in serum samples from IBD patients and in ex vivo cultured human growth plate tissue specimens exposed to IBD serum or TNF alone.
METHODS: Humanin levels were measured by ELISA in serum from 40 children with IBD and 40 age-matched healthy controls. Growth plate specime

A 27-year-old female who suffered from aneurysmal bone cyst in sternal manubrium, which is histologically confirmed, underwent sternal manubriumectomy. Tumor was totally resected. Manubrial defect was replaced with two metal plates, which joined both stumps of the second ribs and both sternal ends of clavicles, respectively, and wide Marlex mesh. Using non-absorbable sutures, two metal plates were fixed to the mesh, and the mesh was also secured to surrounding structures, to hold the normal function of thorax and shoulder joints.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The radial forearm osteocutaneous free flap is an excellent reconstructive modality for oromandibular and maxillofacial reconstruction in certain well-defined circumstances. The initial concern over donor site morbidity and the ability of the bone to reconstruct mandibular defects have led to only a few published series.
STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective study of the experience of two tertiary medical centers with radial forearm osteocutaneous free flap.
METHODS: Retrospectively, 52 patients were studied who underwent radial forearm osteocutaneous free flap reconstruction fo

Surgical fixation techniques for bone fracture healing are well established and effective; however, opportunities remain to improve both functional outcomes and the patient experience. The Biofiligree® concept integrates medicine, engineering, and design by reimagining conventional osteosynthesis plates as both therapeutic and aesthetic devices. Inspired by traditional Portuguese filigree, these plates allow patient participation through personalized geometries, patterns, or engravings and may later be transformed into wearable jewellery after removal, preserving them as symbolic artefacts of

BACKGROUND: Research on the ideal fixation position for plates in medial opening-wedge high tibial osteotomy (MOWHTO) directly applicable in clinical settings is scarce. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the biomechanical effects of different plate positions in MOWHTO through finite element analysis (FEA) to explore a potentially optimal plate position.
METHODS: Utilizing the computed tomography images of a 67-year-old man, a 3-dimensional model of the knee, along with an implant (TomoFix standard plate and screws), was created to simulate a virtual MOWHTO with a 10° medial opening gap.

The mandible is the largest facial bone as well as the most commonly fractured bone in the maxillofacial region. Despite numerous studies conducted to identify optimal treatment modalities and plates configurations for intraoral and transoral approaches, no definitive conclusion has been reached. This study used finite element analysis (FEA) to assess 4 scenarios for treatment of an angle fracture (6-hole noncompression miniplate; 6-hole single plate/Champy's technique, 3D strut plate; 2 parallel 4-hole noncompression miniplates). Analysis included segmental displacement and Von Mises Stress e

We report a 38-year-old male with a nonunion followed by plate breakage after volar plating of a distal radius osteotomy. Volar locking plates have added a new approach to the treatment of distal radius malunions, due to a lower morbidity of the surgical approach and the strength of the final construction, allowing early mobilization and return to function. Conclusion. Plate breakage is an uncommon complication of volar locking plate fixation. To our knowledge, few cases have been described after a distal radius fracture and no case has been described after a distal radius corrective osteotomy

PURPOSE: To evaluate bone formation in the osteotomy gap after open-wedge high tibial osteotomy (OWHTO), including after plate removal, and to investigate risk factors for delayed bone healing.
METHODS: Ninety-three patients (102 knees) who underwent OWHTO without bone grafting were enrolled. The osteotomy gap was divided into the lateral hinge and the four zones on anteroposterior radiographs, and we defined the zone in which trabecular bone continuity could be observed as gap filling. Bone formation in the osteotomy gap was evaluated according to this definition at 3, 6, and 12 months posto

BACKGROUND: Good clinical outcomes for locking plates as an external fixator to treat tibial fractures have been reported. However, external locking plate fixation is still generally rarely performed. This study aimed to compare the stability of an external locking plate fixator with that of a conventional external fixator for extraarticular proximal tibial fractures using finite element analysis.
METHODS: Three models were constructed: (1) external locking plate fixation of proximal tibial fracture with lateral proximal tibial locking plate and 5-mm screws (ELP), (2) conventional external fi

The skeleton of a child with osteogenesis imperfecta type III, resulting from the substitution of glycine 586 by valine in the triple helical domain of the alpha 2 (I) chain of type I collagen, was severely porotic but contained lamellar bone and Haversian systems. From early childhood, structural failure of the bone resulted in the disruption of growth plates, progressive bone deformities, and severe growth retardation.

The occipital bone squamosa (OCS) is unique because of its double origin from both endochondral and membranous bones. The present study attempted to demonstrate the process of connection between these two bone types. We examined sagittal and frontal histological sections from 29 human fetuses with a crown-rump length ranging from 38 to 328 mm (approximately 7-39 weeks of gestational age [GA]). An initial cartilage plate appeared in the posterior side of the fourth ventricle at GA 7-8 weeks and extended inferiorly to connect with the cartilaginous basioccipital and condyle. At GA 9-10 weeks, on

Melamine, which is used as a chemical in the industry, brings to mind the question of food safety due to its presence in the structure of plates, exposure to insecticides, and, most importantly, its addition to formula and pet foods years ago to provide false high protein positivity. This study aimed to examine the effects of exposure to low-dose melamine from the weaning period on bone development. Eighteen female rats (21 days old) were randomly divided into 3 groups. The first group (n = 6) received 0.1 ml saline, the second group (n = 6) and third group (n = 6) received 50 mg/kg and 75 mg/

Dynamic compression plating is a common type of fracture fixation used to compress between bone fragments. The quality of compression across the fracture is important for postoperative stability and primary bone healing. Compression quality may be affected by surgical variations in plate prebend, screw location, screw torque, fracture gap, and implant material. Computational modeling provides a tool for systematically examining these factors, and for visualizing the mechanisms involved. The purpose of this study was to develop a finite element model of dynamic compression plating that includes
