Neuroprotective effect of lipopolysaccharides in a dual-hit rat pup model of preterm hypoxia-ischemia.

The combination of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and hypoxia-ischemia (HI) has been used to model the brain injury sustained by sick pre-term infants in order to study the pathological conditions of diffuse white matter injury, which is a major cause of preterm morbidity. Prior studies have shown that the timing and dose of LPS administration will determine whether the injury is reduced or exacerbated. Here we show that administering a single injection of LPS (0.1 mg/kg) to postnatal-day-2 rat pups 14 h before inducing HI effectively protects the brain from HI-associated damage. We show that the LP

Accelerated Brain Aging in Mild Traumatic Brain Injury: Longitudinal Pattern Recognition with White Matter Integrity.

Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) initiating long-term effects on white matter integrity resembles brain-aging changes, implying an aging process accelerated by mTBI. This longitudinal study aims to investigate the mTBI-induced acceleration of the brain-aging process by developing a neuroimaging model to predict brain age. The brain-age prediction model was defined using relevance vector regression based on fractional anisotropy from diffusion tensor imaging of 523 healthy individuals. The model was used to estimate the brain-predicted age difference (brain-PAD) between the chronological and

Association Between Illness Severity Scores and Quantitatively Measured Brain Injury in Cardiac Arrest Survivors.

Introduction: This study explored how illness severity scores correspond to hypoxic-ischemic brain injury (HIBI) after cardiac arrest. Methods: This study included cardiac arrest survivors with sufficient data to calculate the Pittsburgh Cardiac Arrest Category (PCAC) and revised post-cardiac arrest syndrome for therapeutic hypothermia (rCAST) scores who underwent brain magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid neuron-specific enolase (CSF-NSE) measurement within 6 h after return of spontaneous circulation. The primary outcome was the association of PCAC and rCAST with quantitative br

Tomographic Task-Related Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy in Acute Sport-Related Concussion: An Observational Case Study.

Making decisions regarding return-to-play after sport-related concussion (SRC) based on resolution of symptoms alone can expose contact-sport athletes to further injury before their recovery is complete. Task-related functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) could be used to scan for abnormalities in the brain activation patterns of SRC athletes and help clinicians to manage their return-to-play. This study aims to show a proof of concept of mapping brain activation, using tomographic task-related fNIRS, as part of the clinical assessment of acute SRC patients. A high-density frequency-dom

Magnetic resonance imaging features of brain and spinal cord injury in a fatal case of isopropanol intoxication.

A 60-year-old man presented with headache, dizziness, and disorientation one day after consumption of isopropanol along with ethanol. Computed tomography (CT) of the brain performed immediately was unremarkable. The patient collapsed within the hospital 30 minutes after the CT scan was done, and remained comatose until death, showing no improvement with symptomatic treatment. Magnetic resonance imaging of the brain and spine done 6 days after admission revealed bilaterally symmetrical hyperintensities involving the cerebral and cerebellar cortex and white matter, basal ganglia, thalami, and br

Alterations in Network Connectivity after Traumatic Brain Injury in Mice.

Victims of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) usually do not display clear morphological brain defects, but frequently have long-lasting cognitive deficits, emotional difficulties, and behavioral disturbances. In the present study we used diffusion magnetic resonance imaging (dMRI) combined with graph theory measurements to investigate the effects of mTBI on brain network connectivity. We employed a non-invasive closed-head weight-drop mouse model to produce mTBI. Mice were scanned at two time points, 24 h before the injury and either 7 or 30 days following the injury. Connectivity matrices we

The cerebrovascular response to experimental lateral head acceleration.

A number of microvascular changes, such as the development of astrocyte lucency, increased endothelial pit/vesicle activity, development of crater like lesions, and endothelial microvilli have been reported after injury to the brain. Lateral head acceleration in the non-human primate, however, still provides the best experimental model for human diffuse axonal injury. No attempt has yet been made to document the spatial extent or time course of the microvascular response to acceleration injury to the head. We have examined the brains of baboons 1, 4, 6, and 12 h and 7 days after acceleration i

Forgetting to remember: hypoglycaemic encephalopathy.

A 37-year-old woman with a history of poorly controlled type 1 diabetes presented acutely with a decreased Glasgow Coma Scale and a diagnosis of hypoglycaemic brain injury. Her MRI highlighted bilateral hippocampi diffusion restriction and T2 hyperintensity. Clinically, she had a marked cognitive deficit, particularly of short-term, anterograde amnesia. She was managed conservatively and with intensive rehabilitation.

Graph theory analysis of DTI tractography in children with traumatic injury.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate brai structural connectivity in children with traumatic injury (TI) following a motor vehicle accident using graph theory analysis of DTI tractography data. METHODS: DTI scans were acquired on a 3 T Philips scanner from children aged 8-15 years approximately 2 months post-injury. The TI group consisted of children with traumatic brain injury (TBI; n = 44) or extracranial injury (EI; n = 23). Healthy control children (n = 36) were included as an age-matched comparison group. A graph theory approach was applied to DTI tractography data to investigate injury-related differ

An infantile traumatic brain injury with a bright tree appearance detected before the late seizure.

INDRODUCTION: Infantile traumatic brain injury (TBI) rarely follows a biphasic clinical course and exhibits a bright tree appearance (BTA) on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). This is termed infantile traumatic brain injury with a biphasic clinical course and late reduced diffusion (TBIRD). TBIRD has clinical features similar to those of acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD). It remains to be clarified which patients with infantile TBI will develop TBIRD and the prevention and treatment of TBIRD. CASE AND REVIEW: We report a case of TBIRD that exhibited

Meningeal Lymphatic LTBR Deficiency Links Spinal Cord Injury to Secondary Brain Pathology.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) induces secondary brain pathology, but the mechanisms linking spinal and brain injury remain unclear. Here, we identify meningeal lymphatic dysfunction as a contributor to secondary brain pathology after SCI. In mice, meningeal lymphatic vessels (mLVs) progressively deteriorated from 14 to 56 days post-injury, accompanied by glymphatic dysfunction. In patients with SCI, diffusion tensor imaging along the perivascular space (DTI-ALPS) revealed impaired glymphatic function, which correlated with motor cortical and hippocampal atrophy. mLVs ablation exacerbated neuroinfla

Effect of hypocapnea on CBF and extracellular intermediates of secondary brain injury.

We examined the metabolic response of the brain underlying subdural hematomas or surrounding contusions to hyperventilation and looked for evidence of ischemia. Twelve consecutive patients with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) (GCS < 8) who required surgery for evacuation of subdural hematoma or hemorrhagic contusion were studied. At surgery, a microdialysis catheter was placed into the cortex in a gyrus adjacent to the contusion or underlying the subdural hematoma. A thermal diffusion flow probe was placed on the cortex directly above the dialysis catheter. On days 1 and 3 post injury, two

Electroacupuncture treatment can improve cognitive impairment in spontaneously hypertensive rats: a preliminary DTI study.

BACKGROUND: Hypertension is a significant risk factor for cognitive impairment. Our group's previous rs-fMRI study has found that acupuncture can enhance the functional connectivity of brain regions related to cognitive function, thereby protecting the cognitive function of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRs). METHODS: This study aimed to reveal the effects of electroacupuncture on the white matter structure in the brain regions of SHRs using the diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) technique. 20 SHRs were divided into the electroacupuncture group (EA) and the model group (SHR), and 10 Wistar-Ky

Neuroimaging abnormalities in clade C HIV are independent of Tat genetic diversity.

Controversy remains regarding the neurotoxicity of clade C human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-C). When examined in preclinical studies, a cysteine to serine substitution in the C31 dicysteine motif of the HIV-C Tat protein (C31S) results in less severe brain injury compared to other viral clades. By contrast, patient cohort studies identify significant neuropsychological impairment among HIV-C individuals independent of Tat variability. The present study clarified this discrepancy by examining neuroimaging markers of brain integrity among HIV-C individuals with and without the Tat substitution.

Post-traumatic dementia: Advances in understanding neurodegenerative mechanisms.

Traumatic brain injury can trigger long-term neurodegenerative diseases beyond its devastating acute effects. This narrative review summarizes current understanding of the neurodegenerative mechanisms underlying post-traumatic dementia. Core mechanisms involve multiple pathophysiological processes: long-term dysfunction of the blood-brain barrier, which impairs the clearance of toxic proteins; diffuse axonal injury, leading topersistent disruption of axonal transport, dysregulation of calcium homeostasis, and Wallerian-like degeneration; and the abnormal deposition of key pathological proteins

Management of minor head injury: the value of early computed tomography and serum protein S-100 measurements.

Computed tomography (CT) scan was performed within 6 h in 91 patients with minor head injury (MHI). Eight patients (9%) demonstrated intracranial lesions on CT scan (6 brain contusions, 1 brain edema and 1 extradural hematoma). No patient required craniotomy. In patients with normal CT scan, no complications to the head injury were observed. Patients with intracranial lesions were hospitalized significantly longer (mean 9.4 days) than patients without (mean 1.6 days). In a subgroup of 50 patients with normal CT scan, serum S-100 protein was measured on admission. Elevated S-100 levels were see

Measurement of Peripheral Vision Reaction Time Identifies White Matter Disruption in Patients with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

This study examined whether peripheral vision reaction time (PVRT) in patients with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) correlated with white matter abnormalities in centroaxial structures and impairments in neuropsychological testing. Within 24 h after mTBI, crossed reaction times (CRT), uncrossed reaction times (URT), and crossed-uncrossed difference (CUD) were measured in 23 patients using a laptop computer that displayed visual stimuli predominantly to either the left or the right visual field of the retina. The CUD is a surrogate marker of the interhemispheric transfer time (ITT). Within 7

Fulminant bilateral upper limb thrombophlebitis following traumatic brain injury in a patient with chronic substance use: A fatal case of trauma-associated immunothrombosis.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral upper limb superficial thrombophlebitis is rare in trauma patients and typically indicates systemic thromboinflammatory activation rather than localized vascular injury. Trauma-associated immunothrombosis is increasingly recognized as distinct from classical disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC). CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old male presented with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) following an unwitnessed fall. On hospital day six, he developed progressive discoloration of the left hand, rapidly involving the right upper limb. Doppler ultrasonography confirmed

Repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation Improves Cognitive Impairment via the Regulation of White Matter Injury in Rats With Ischemic Stroke.

PURPOSE: Poststroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) is a common functional disorder that occurs following stroke, but there are few effective therapies. Repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) is a noninvasive neuromodulatory technique that has been used to improve cognitive function in stroke patients. Despite its widespread use in clinical research, the underlying mechanisms of rTMS are largely unknown. This study hypothesized that rTMS ameliorates PSCI by regulating white matter injury, which is of vital importance in cerebral ischemia. METHOD: An ischemic stroke rat model was crea

Predicting Reactive Astrogliosis Propagation by Bayesian Computational Modeling: the Repeater Stations Model.

Reactive astrogliosis occurs upon focal brain injury and in neurodegenerative diseases. The mechanisms that propagate reactive astrogliosis to distal parts of the brain, in a rapid wave that activates astrocytes and other cell types along the way, are not completely understood. It is proposed that damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMP) released by necrotic cells from the injury core have a major role in the reactive astrogliosis initiation but whether they also participate in reactive astrogliosis propagation remains to be determined. We here developed a Bayesian computational model to de
