Spinal subarachnoid cyst in a cat.

A 7-year-old neutered female domestic short hair cat was presented with hind limb ataxia. A subarachnoid cyst in the T10-T11 spinal cord region was identified by myelography as a collection of contrast medium in the subarachnoid space.

Gastric disease in the dog and cat.

The physiology of the normal gastric defence mechanisms in the dog and cat is reviewed to emphasize the routes by which drugs can be used to protect the gastric mucosa. The action of the main anti-ulcer and pro-kinetic drugs are discussed in relation to the diseases that they may be used to treat. Gastric disease in the form of gastric dilatation/volvulus, chronic vomiting without obstruction and gastric outflow disease are described from the point of view of diagnosis and treatment.

[Dog, cat and human bites].

Animal and human bites carry a high risk of infectious complications. Human bites and in particular clenched-fist injuries as well as cat bites are highly prone to infection as are wounds that involve the hand or deep structures including joints, bones and tendons. The management of bite wounds consists of intensive irrigation with large volumes of normal saline and a cautions debridement of devitalized tissues. Generally, it appears prudent to leave the wounds open, however, in cases carrying a low risk of infection, a primary surgical closure might be appropriate. If a bite wound is infected

Experimental facial myokymia in cat.

INTRODUCTION: The objective of this study was to describe facial myokymia in experimental animals accompanying kainic acid affects on facial motor neurons. MATERIAL & METHODS: Anesthetized cats were injected with kainic acid into the pons adjacent to the facial nucleus. Facial movements appeared shortly after the injections and facial electromyographic potentials were recorded. Cats were killed up to 4 weeks later, the brainstems were processed histologically, and the number of neurons in the facial nucleus counted. RESULTS: Cats receiving injection of kainic acid adjacent to facial nucleus …

Cat scratch disease in a child.

We report a case of a 9-year-old girl scratched on the right side of her neck by a kitten about one month prior to admission. She was well until three weeks later when she developed enlarged right neck masses, a pustula on the scratch site, right injected conjunctiva, headache, general malaise and fever, thus fulfilling the clinical criteria for CSD. Initially, she was treated by a practicing physician but the manifestations persisted for one week. After admission, leukocytosis and a mildly elevated erythrocyte sedimentary rate were noted. The serum IgG titer to Bartonella henselae was perform

Fatal cerebral coenurosis in a cat.

A 6-year-old cat that was laterally recumbent and panting was evaluated because of a 10-day history of progressive neurologic abnormalities. … ging from undifferentiated to nearly mature. Taenia serialis has a canid-lagomorph life cycle, with cats being accidental intermediate hosts. However, the potential exists for rare zoonotic transmission and subsequent serious disease in human beings and other accidental intermediate hosts.

On the phasic reflex bronchodilation in the cat.

In records of tracheal pressure or flow taken from anesthetized cats appear large pressure-negative, or air inflow excursions, in response to single pulses applied to the central end of the vagus nerve. These responses have been attributed to phasic bronchodilation and not only due to the brief contractions of inspiratory muscles that occur as part of the total responses. Phasic bronchodilation responses appear mainly during inspiration but they may also occur in the expiratory phase through facilitation, during post-hyperventilatory apnea or that induced by constant current (d.c.) vagal stimu…

Diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis in a cat.

An adult long-haired domestic cat native to South Texas developed signs consistent with diffuse cutaneous leishmaniasis. Cutaneous leishmani … n one occasion, however, there was partial regression of the lesions following the Montenegro test. Cats in areas endemic for cutaneous leishmaniasis (South Texas) may serve as sentinels for the agent. The epidemiology of the infection in this area is largely unknown, as is the importance of cats in the spread of disease.

Lynxacarus radovskyi infestation in a cat.

An adult domestic short-hair cat from south Texas was examined because of excessive dandruff on the back, neck, thorax, and hind limbs. Removal of a few hairs for microscopic evaluation revealed Lynxacarus radovskyi, the cat fur mite. The small (< 0.5 mm) mite could be readily identified by its laterally compressed body and its characteristic grasping of the hair shaft between the gnathosoma and palpi. Thus far, this mite has been identified as a parasite of cats in warm, humid environments. The number of parasites and apparent discomfort in cats varies considerably, from massive infestation w…

The ethology of the human-cat relationship.

Comparative behavioural observations were made in the home setting in order to analyze the ethology of the human-cat relationship. Factors postulated, and indeed, found to influence that relationship included marital status of the human (women living alone, with a partner or with a partner and children), housing conditions of the cat (indoor vs. outdoor access), number of cats kept (one vs. more than one), and to a very minor extent, pedigree of the cat (purebred vs. domestic mixture). Various measures of success at both the interactional, and the relationship level were examined and yielded t…

Habituation of motion sickness in the cat.

We subjected 30 female cats to a motion sickness stimulus in three series of tests. A series consisted of five tests given bi-weekly, weekly, or daily. Each test consisted of 30 min of stimulation followed by 1 min of rest, and series were separated by a period of not less than 14 d. Retching was the dependent variable. No habituation (reduction in the incidence of retching) was found with biweekly testing but pronounced habituation was observed with weekly and daily testing. The 30 cats were divided evenly into high and low susceptibility groups based on the results of the biweekly tests. The…
