Stroke is the leading cause of seizures and epilepsy in older adults. Patients who have larger and more severe strokes involving the cortex, are younger, and have acute symptomatic seizures and intracerebral haemorrhage are at highest risk of developing post-stroke epilepsy. Prognostic models, including the SeLECT and CAVE scores, help gauge the risk of epileptogenesis. Early electroencephalogram and blood-based biomarkers can provide information additional to the clinical risk factors of post-stroke epilepsy. The management of acute versus remote symptomatic seizures after stroke is markedly

INTRODUCTION: A double caecal appendix is an uncommon anatomical variation with significant surgical implications. A few cases of the double caecal appendix have been reported worldwide, mostly in adults. The diagnosis is, usually incidental, typically made intraoperatively.
CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 6-month-old boy with an incidental diagnosis of the double appendix during laparotomy for intussusception.
DISCUSSION: The double appendix can be classified using the Cave-Wallbridge classification, which identifies three types of the duplicated appendix: A, B, and C. The complicatio

We report a case of a primary malignant lymphoma of the trigeminal nerve that was associated with facial pain. A 65-year-old man was examined at another hospital for unilateral facial pain. Carbamazepine was prescribed, but his symptoms did not improve. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed swelling of the trigeminal nerve and a mass lesion in Meckel's cave. The patient was referred to our hospital at this point. Gadolinium-enhanced MRI and F18-Fluorodeoxyglucose-position emission tomography suggested a likely malignant tumour and a biopsy was performed. Histopathological examination showe

Neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are aggressive diseases developing from neuroendocrine cells that most frequently involve the gastro-entero-pancreatic tract and the lung, but more rarely are found in almost all body tissues. Limited biological and clinical data are currently available for NETs in uncommon sites, such as female genital tract. NETs represent 0.9% to 1.5% of the tumors of the uterine cervix. This case is reported on a 75-year-old Caucasian woman, presenting with dental and generalized pain for two weeks. Later during her admission, facial droop and diplopia were noticed. Radiologica

The reported incidence of neoplasia in the extinct hominin record is rare. We describe here the first palaeopathological analysis of an osteogenic lesion in the extinct hominin Homo naledi from Dinaledi Cave (Rising Star), South Africa. The lesion presented as an irregular bony growth, found on the right lingual surface of the body of the adult mandible U.W. 101-1142. The growth was macroscopically evaluated and internally imaged using micro-focus x-ray computed tomography (μCT). A detailed description and differential diagnosis were undertaken using gross and micromorphology, and we conclude

BACKGROUND: Intracranial ganglioneuromas are very rare benign tumors of neural crest origin and generally arise from the peripheral nervous system or adrenal glands. Very few cases of intracranial ganglioneuroma arising from the trigeminal nerve have been reported in the literature, all in East Asia.
CASE DESCRIPTION: A 52-year-old male presented to his primary care physician for evaluation of right facial and periorbital pain for over 18 months. He also reported a two-week history of diplopia with right lateral gaze, which resolved spontaneously. An MRI brain with and without contrast reveal

INTRODUCTION: Trigeminal neuralgia is produced in a significant number of cases by vascular compression at the level of cisternal segment of the nerve at the entry of the pons. It is common to find superior cerebellar artery (SCA) responsible for this compression. The retrosigmoid approach (RA), with asterional craniectomy, clearly exposes the cisternal portion of the trigeminal nerve (TN).
PRESENTATION OF CASE: We describe in this case report how vessels at the trigeminal pore level known as "Meckel's segment" can compress the TN. This situation is unusual. One of the reasons why the compres

The information on the prevalence of fungal infections in the Caribbean region including Trinidad and Tobago (population 1,339,000 million) is scanty. Tinea capitis is common in children, being predominant in those of African descent, with no definitive estimate. Asthma is also common affecting 77,000-139,000 adults with an estimated 1927-3491 affected by allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis (ABPA) and 2544-4608 with severe asthma and fungal sensitisation (SAFS). An estimated 23,763 women have ≥4 attacks of vaginal candidiasis annually. Among the estimated 14,000 HIV-infected patients, 750

Trigeminal schwannomas represent between 0.07% and 0.36% of all intracranial tumors and 0.8% to 8% of intracranial schwannomas. Selection of the appropriate management strategy requires an understanding of the tumor's natural history and treatment outcomes. This report describes the case of a 36-year-old male who presented with a three-month history of progressive headaches, dizziness, loss of balance, decreased sleep, and cognitive decline. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a large enhancing lesion centered around the left Meckel's cave and extending into both the middle and the posterior f

A 77-year-old man underwent thoracic surgery. He had a history of two previous operations: parapharyngeal tumor removal with temporal tracheotomy 14 years ago and, two years later, a sinus surgery when, according to our anesthesia registry, intubation was extremely difficult due to stricture of the trachea underneath the tracheotomy scar. Pathology was not fully elucidated. Preoperative examinations including chest x-ray, spirogram and CT were not remarkable. The scar above the suprasternal notch was visibly sunken and retracted with respiration. Stridor was auscultated but breathing was not l

PURPOSE: Portosystemic collateral vessels (PSCV) are a consequence of the portal hypertension that occurs in chronic liver diseases. Their prognosis is strongly marked by the risk of digestive hemorrhage and hepatic encephalopathy.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CT was performed with a 16-MDCT scanner. Maximum intensity projection and volume rendering were systematically performed on a workstation to analyze PSCV.
RESULTS: We describe the PSCV according to their drainage into either the superior or the inferior vena cava. In the superior vena cave group, we found gastric veins, gastric varices, esop

A woman developed Marburg haemorrhagic fever in the Netherlands, most likely as a consequence of being exposed to virus-infected bats in the python cave in Maramagambo Forest during a visit to Uganda. The clinical syndrome was dominated by acute liver failure with secondary coagulopathy, followed by a severe systemic inflammatory response, multiorgan failure, and fatal cerebral oedema. A high blood viral load persisted during the course of the disease. The initial systemic inflammatory response coincided with peaks in interferon-γ and tumour necrosis factor-α concentrations in the blood. A ter

WE EXAMINED SPECIAL pathological changes of the lumbar spine from skeleton remains referred to as "Stetten 1," one of the earliest specimens of modern humans dating from the Early Stone Age (Upper Paleolithic). The skeleton was discovered during archaeological excavations under Riek in 1931 in the Vogelherd Cave near Stetten, close to the Lone Valley of southwestern Germany. The archaeological context is the so-called Aurignacian period (40,000-30,000 yr ago), representing the earliest cultural step of modern humans in Europe. Accelerator mass spectrometry with (14)C measurement yields a calib

This paper addresses the question as to whether long-term perceptual priming can occur during transient global amnesia. A patient who displayed the classical features of transient global amnesia was assessed during the episode and again 7 days later. During the episode, she was administered a task that required the perceptual identification of fragmented pictures over a number of learning trials. Seven days later, after recovery from the episode, she was required to identify the same fragmented pictures together with a new set of pictures that she had never seen before. She was significantly b

Identification of supernumerary de novo marker chromosomes was considered up to now as difficult and sometimes impossible with classical cytogenetical banding methods. The determination of their chromosomal origin is now easier with fluorescent in situ hybridisation techniques and enables an exact correlation between chromosomal aberration and phenotypic features to be established. The authors describe the use of chromosome painting with chromosome 13 and 18 Whole library DNA probe for identification of supernumerary markers in tow patients with congenital disorders. Cytogenetic examination in

BACKGROUND: Percutaneous balloon compression (PBC) is a safe and effective surgical technique for treating trigeminal neuralgia. The filling balloon can compress the trigeminal ganglion in Meckel's cave to achieve the interruption of pain signals. The core of the operation is the successful placement of a balloon catheter into Meckel's cave so that effective compression of the trigeminal ganglion can be achieved after the balloon is inflated.
OBJECTIVE: In this article, we try to determine the application value of the balloon pre-inflating technique (using contrast agents as guides during pos

The increasing prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) presents a significant global health challenge, underscoring the urgent need for novel antimicrobial agents. Actinomycetes, particularly Streptomyces species, are well known for synthesizing bioactive compounds with antibacterial, antifungal, and antiviral properties. This review explores the diversity and antimicrobial potential of actinomycetes from Saudi Arabia's unique ecosystems, including terrestrial (soil, rhizosphere), aquatic (marine, freshwater), extreme (deserts, caves, hot springs, mountains, and mangroves), and other uniq…
