Morphological study, by teasing examination, of the communication from the musculocutaneous to median nerves.

Nine specimens with communications from the musculocutaneous to the median nerves were investigated, by teasing examination, from their origins in the brachial plexus to their final destinations in nerve fibers. The nerve fibers of the communications were derived from the sixth and seventh cervical ventral rami of the spinal nerves. The distributions of the nerve fibers of the communications were divided into four types. In Type A, the nerve fibers reached the thenar muscles and the lateral digital nerves. In Type B, they reached the pronator teres or flexor carpi radialis muscles in addition

[Observation of the ventricular system and subarachnoid space in the skull base by flexible neuroendoscopy: normal structures].

Worldwide in the last two decades, in Latin America in the last decade, and Mexico in particular cerebral endoscopy as part of the minimally invasive neurological surgery, has constituted a significant advance for the treatment of neurological diseases such as congenital or acquired hydrocephalus, Chiari malformation, neurocysticercosis, stroke, ventricular and paraventricular tumors and cysts, arachnoidal cyst and hydrocephalus secondary to shunt malfunction. The lateral ventricles, the third ventricle, the cerebral aqueduct, the fourth ventricle, and the subarachnoid basal cisterns are among

Endovascular management of a hypoglossal canal dural arteriovenous fistula.

BACKGROUND: Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVFs) involving the hypoglossal canal are rare vascular anomalies, typically manifesting with pulsatile tinnitus or lower cranial nerve dysfunction. Treatment planning must account for their highly variable and often evolving venous drainage patterns. CASE REPORT: We present the case of a 54-year-old male with right-sided pulsatile tinnitus and episodic headaches. Imaging revealed a DAVF centered at the right hypoglossal canal with multiple arterial feeders and dominant intracranial retrograde drainage into the inferior petrosal and cavernous sinuses

Enhanced regeneration and reinnervation following timed GDNF gene therapy in a cervical ventral root avulsion.

Avulsion of spinal nerve roots is a severe proximal peripheral nerve lesion. Despite neurosurgical repair, recovery of function in human patients is disappointing, because spinal motor neurons degenerate progressively, axons grow slowly and the distal Schwann cells which are instrumental to supporting axon extension lose their pro-regenerative properties. We have recently shown that timed GDNF gene therapy (dox-i-GDNF) in a lumbar plexus injury model promotes axon regeneration and improves electrophysiological recovery but fails to stimulate voluntary hind paw function. Here we report that dox

Enteric neurons of the esophagus: an immunohistochemical study using donated elderly cadavers.

PURPOSE: To describe and discuss the normal anatomy and function of enteric neurons in the esophagus of aged individuals. METHOD: We examined ganglion cells in esophagus specimens obtained from 15 elderly cadavers without any macroscopic pathology in the mediastinum and abdomen. Neuronal nitric oxide synthase and vasoactive intestinal polypeptide were used as parasympathetic nerve markers, and tyrosine hydroxylase as a sympathetic nerve marker. RESULTS: The thoracic and abdominal esophagus contained a well-developed myenteric nerve plexus (S100 protein-positive area) in the intermuscular lay

Use of closed suction devices and other drains in spinal surgery: results of an online, Germany-wide questionnaire.

PURPOSE: The risks of drains in spine surgery (e.g., increasing venous plexus bleeding, maintaining CSF leakage, and infections) must be balanced with their benefits (e.g., reduced rate of postoperative hematoma and seroma formation). Little is known about factors that influence surgeons' decision to employ a drain. METHODS: We conducted a survey among German spine surgeons regarding their use of drains. Neurosurgical and orthopedic departments along with privately practicing neurosurgeons were invited to complete an online questionnaire featuring general and case-specific questions with rega

Electrical nerve stimulation using a stimulating catheter: what is the lower limit?

OBJECTIVES: To minimize the risk of intraneural injection when performing nerve blocks, some authors caution against injecting through a needle placed with motor responses observed at nerve stimulator output settings of 0.3 mA or less. We present a case of placing a continuous cervical paravertebral catheter with brisk motor response while stimulating the catheter at 0.05 mA, with no adverse sequelae. CASE REPORT: A 56-year-old man scheduled for rotator cuff repair received a continuous cervical paravertebral block for intraoperative and postoperative pain control. A stimulating catheter was

Localization of mercury in CNS of the rat. III. Oral administration of methylmercuric chloride (CH3HgCl).

The distribution and cellular localization of mercury in the in situ brain and upper cervical spinal cord of adult Wistar rats were studied at various time intervals after oral administration of methylmercuric chloride (CH3HgCl; 20 mg x liter-1). Coronal sections of the brain and transverse sections of the cervical spinal cord were prepared for visualization of the mercury by the autometallographic silver-enhancement method. Following mercury administration there was a latent period before the metal appeared in the tissue. Mercury staining was first detected after 10 days in cell bodies of fiv

Morphogenesis of Human Scalene Muscles Between Weeks 6 and 13 of Development: Anatomical Aspects and Clinical-Functional Relevance.

The scalene muscles represent a crucial muscle group in cervical anatomy, with significant clinical and functional implications. Despite their importance, studies on their embryonic and fetal development remain scarce. This study examined the morphogenesis of the scalene muscles bilaterally in 33 developing human specimens [66 sides from 12 embryos (Weeks 6-8) and 21 fetuses (Weeks 9-13)] using serial histological sections and conventional light microscopy. The scalene blastema appeared during Week 6 of development, comprising myoblasts, mesenchymal cells, and collagen fibers, and was surround

Cervicothoracic lipoma in a child: A case report.

INTRODUCTION: Lipomas are typically slow-growing tumors with the highest incidence in the fourth through sixth decades of life, less commonly occurring in pediatric patients, particularly extending across multiple body compartments. Excision is often reserved for cases that cause cosmetic or compressive symptoms and, due to the slow growth pattern, is less likely to be necessary in younger patients. CASE PRESENTATION: A 2-year-old female with congenital albinism presented with a painless but visible 3 × 4 cm non-mobile left lateral neck mass that had been present for 2 months. MRI without con

Diagrammatic Approach to Delineate Phrenic Nerve in Central Lung Tumors.

Incremental use of high-dose radiation therapy (RT) with SABR in thoracic tumors has led to identification of many unusual toxicities (chest wall pain, rib fractures, vascular perforation, brachial plexopathy) and consequently additional organs at risk (OARs; chest wall, ribs, bronchial wall, carotid artery, brachial plexus). Phrenic nerve is another structure that may be affected at any point during its long course from origin until end, although symptomatic toxicities have been reported rarely in the setting of reirradiation, large-volume irradiation such as mantle field, or SABR. We underto

[Changes in short latency SEPs (S-SEPs) to median nerve stimulation in brain dead patients].

Short latency SEPs (S-SEPs) to median nerve stimulation consist of positive waves of P1, P2, P3 and P4, followed by negative waves of N 16 and N 19. These potential reflect activities of peripheral nerve, dorsal column of the cervical cord and medial lemniscus. The origins of these waves are considered as follows, P1--peripheral part of the brachial plexus, P2--the entry into the spinal cord or the dorsal column, P3--dorsal column nucleus or upper cervical cord, P4--the medial lemniscus, N 16--rostral brain stem or the thalamus, and N 19--thalamocortical projection or the cortex. The purpose o

Metabolic turnover of collagen in the mouse molar periodontal ligament during tooth eruption.

Metabolic turnover of collagen in the developing molar periodontal ligament was studied in 10, 12 and 16 days old mice by autoradiography after the administration of [3H]proline. Grain counts, in number per unit area, were made over three different zones (apical, middle and cervical) of the sections and activity time curves were drawn. Calculated regressions (log10 grain density V time) were fitted and analyses of variance to test the linearity of the regressions were carried out using the computer. Slopes +/- S.E. of the regressions, and half-lives were estimated. This study has demonstrated

Innervation of the trachealis muscle in the guinea-pig: a quantitative ultrastructural study.

The fine structure and composition of the nerve plexuses associated with the cervical and the thoracic parts of the trachealis muscle were studied in two groups of six guinea-pigs. One group of animals was perfused with fixative before removal of the specimens. In the second, the specimens were incubated in 5-hydroxydopamine before cold immersion fixation. In both the cervical and the thoracic trachea, plexuses of nerves were found within and between the fascicles of muscle cells. The number of intrafascicular nerves/1000 micrometer 2 was low, and only a small proportion of the nerves containe
