Mental health concerns have been well studied among youth experiencing homelessness, yet few studies have explored factors that contribute to well-being in this population. The current cross-sectional study examined rates and correlates of well-being among youth experiencing homelessness. Using data from Wave 3 of the Chicago Health and Life Experiences of Women (CHLEW) study (N = 699), we explored whether religiosity and spirituality were associated with risk of hazardous drinking, drug use, and depression among sexual minority women (SMW; i.e., lesbian, bisexual) and possible differences by race/ethnicity. Low-income, urban African American (AA) girls are at heightened risk for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and violence exposure may be an important risk factor. Among persons living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) experiencing homelessness or imminent risk of homelessness, a history of incarceration may serve as a marker for ongoing risk behavior or health disparities. We examined factors associated with a history of incarceration among HIV-positive clients of housing agencies in Baltimore, Chicago, and Los Angeles (N = 581). We performed a prospective study of all inpatient and outpatient methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates identified at the University of Chicago Hospitals from November 2003 through November 2004. Qualitative data suggest a transition from cocaine to methamphetamine in Chicago, and that reduction in partners is due to fear of relapsing in sexual situations rather than program teachings. This study assessed HIV risk behaviors in a sample of homeless youth in a large urban area and examined factors associated with these behaviors. Self-reported behaviors were assessed via interviews with 196 homeless youth in Chicago in all 10 urban shelters serving this group and in 5 street locations. A retrospective analysis of 100 children followed at Children's Memorial Hospital, Chicago, who underwent surgery for a spinal lipoma was performed. The mean follow-up was 5 years. We found that an operation performed during the 1st year of life with the goal of untethering the spinal cord and debulking the spinal lipoma was safe and effective, whereas a cosmetic (nonuntethering) procedure always led to delayed postoperative deterioration (symptomatic tethered cord). To determine whether childhood intestinal intussusception is associated with elevated plasma beta-endorphin levels, a series of patients was studied prospectively. Fourteen patients (age range between 3 months and 7 years) presented to two university pediatric emergency departments in Chicago with clinical symptoms and signs of intussusception. This is a clinicopathologic study summarizing the experience with hepatoblastomas at Children's Memorial Hospital of Chicago between 1954 and 1981. Of 21 patients studied, 13 (61.9%) died. Three major histologic epithelial patterns were identified: fetal, embryonal, and macrotrabecular. The first two may represent different stages of cytodifferentiation of hepatoblastoma cells. In 1948 one of us (O.S.) proposed a new method of treatment, abdominoperineal resection, for patients with congential megacolon. Since then, 483 patients have been treated by 13 pediatric surgeons in Chicago and Boston using this technique. Two hundred and eight-two of the patients were last interviewed and examined more than 5 years after the resection. There were 16 postoperative deaths (3.3%) and 6 late deaths (1.2%) from enterocolitis. Both early and late complications were infrequent and are discussed in detail.
