Occurrence of Marek's Disease in Backyard Chicken Flocks in Vietnam.

Marek's disease (MD) is a common lymphomatous and neuropathic disease of birds, especially chickens, and has caused significant losses to chicken production as a result of high mortality and morbidity. This study aims to determine the status of MD in backyard flocks in the Mekong Delta of Vietnam and to analyze clinical cases occurring during a year. The study was carried out from August 2018 to July 2019, during which time 16 suspected cases of chicken flocks with MD were observed, 40 chickens were subjected to anatomopathological examination, and PCR was performed for diagnosis of MD and det…

Studies on the interactions of retinal dopamine with choroidal thickness in the chicken.

PURPOSE: Recently, an increasing number of studies relied on the assumption that visually induced changes in choroidal thickness can serve as a proxy to predict future axial eye growth. The retinal signals controlling choroidal thickness are, however, not well defined. We have studied the potential roles of dopamine, released from the retina, in the choroidal response in the chicken. METHODS: Changes in retinal dopamine release and choroidal thickness changes were induced by intravitreal injections of either atropine (250 µg or 360 nMol), atropine combined with a dopamine antagonist, spiperon

Different litter compositions influence broiler chicken locomotion.

BACKGROUND: Bedding material must absorb moisture, reduce impacts, and allow chicken to express their natural behavior reducing the occurrence of injuries in the footpad and joints, and improving carcass quality and performance. AIMS: This study evaluated different bedding materials with different levels of inclusion of dried grass (Zoysia japonica) on the development of lesions in the locomotor system of broiler chickens. METHODS: One thousand eight-day-old male chicks of the Cobb 500® were distributed in a completely randomized design with a 3 × 2 factorial scheme: three levels of grass in…

Retail Chicken Carcasses as a Reservoir of Multidrug-Resistant Salmonella.

Salmonella is a major cause of foodborne disease outbreaks worldwide, mainly through poultry. Recently, there has been an increase in multidrug-resistant (MDR) Salmonella infections globally. The increased drug resistance results in increased costs and poorer health outcomes due to unavailability or delayed treatment. This study aims to determine the prevalence of Salmonella in retail raw chicken meat and identify their antimicrobial resistance profiles. A total of 270 retail raw chicken carcasses (local and imported) were collected from three hypermarket chains in Qatar between November 2017

Sigmoid Perforation Secondary to Accidental Ingestion of a Chicken Bone.

Presentation We describe an unusual presentation of sigmoid colon perforation secondary to an ingested chicken bone. Diagnosis The patient presented with a 4 day history of abdominal pain and distension. On examination there were signs of peritonism. Inflammatory markers were raised. Computed tomography revealed a linear density projecting through the wall of the colon. Treatment The patient underwent emergency laparotomy and a Hartmann's procedure. A chicken bone was found to be the causative foreign object. Conclusion Foreign body ingestion is an uncommon cause of sigmoid perforation which m

Caveolin-3: A Causative Process of Chicken Muscular Dystrophy.

The etiology of chicken muscular dystrophy is the synthesis of aberrant WW domain containing E3 ubiquitin-protein ligase 1 (WWP1) protein made by a missense mutation of WWP1 gene. The β-dystroglycan that confers stability to sarcolemma was identified as a substrate of WWP protein, which induces the next molecular collapse. The aberrant WWP1 increases the ubiquitin ligase-mediated ubiquitination following severe degradation of sarcolemmal and cytoplasmic β-dystroglycan, and an erased β-dystroglycan in dystrophic αW fibers will lead to molecular imperfection of the dystrophin-glycoprotein comple

Intestinal-peritoneal Coelioscopy for the Diagnosis of a Mesothelioma in a Pet Chicken.

An adult female chicken, from a small backyard flock, was presented to the Ontario Veterinary College Avian and Exotics Service for evaluation of dyspnea and recurrent ascites. An antemortem diagnostic evaluation included a coelomocentesis, coelomic ultrasound, and a coelioscopy procedure. A sample of the fluid collected during the coelomocentesis was submitted for analysis and was determined to be a nonspecific modified proteinaceous transudate. The coelomic ultrasound examination identified numerous coalescing fluid-filled and solid nodules throughout the coelom. However, no site of origin o

Zika virus-induced brain malformations in chicken embryos.

BACKGROUND: Zika virus (ZIKV) was confirmed to be related to microcephaly in 2016. However, there is still a need for understanding the embryonic morphological changes induced by ZIKV and when they occur. Here, chicken embryos were chosen as experimental model of ZIKV to evaluate virus-associated morphological alterations that might take place during embryonic development. METHODS: A screening with different viral doses was conducted in embryos at HH Stage 10-12 (E1.5) as well as a follow up of the first 5 days postinfection (dpi) was performed to observe the main morphologic changes post ZIK

Dual Role of Chondrocytes in Rheumatoid Arthritis: The Chicken and the Egg.

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is one of the inflammatory joint diseases that display features of articular cartilage destruction. The underlying disturbance results from immune dysregulation that directly and indirectly influence chondrocyte physiology. In the last years, significant evidence inferred from studies in vitro and in the animal model offered a more holistic vision of chondrocytes in RA. Chondrocytes, despite being one of injured cells in RA, also undergo molecular alterations to actively participate in inflammation and matrix destruction in the human rheumatoid joint. This review cove

The Effects of Low Selenium on DNA Methylation in the Tissues of Chickens.

DNA methylation is involved in epigenetic mechanisms associated with gene suppression, and its abnormalities lead to gene instability and disease development. As an essential trace element in humans and animals, selenium (Se) is also associated with abnormal changes in DNA methylation. However, the effect of low Se on DNA methylation in avian tissues has not been reported. In the current study, chickens were fed a low-Se diet (0.033 mg Se/kg) or supplemented with 0.15 mg Se/kg as selenite for up to 55 days. DNA methylation levels were examined by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). …

Sequential Transmission of Salmonella in the Slaughtering Process of Chicken in Korea.

Salmonella is one of the most common foodborne pathogens worldwide. Salmonella infections in humans are mainly associated with consumption of poultry products contaminated with this foodborne pathogen. Therefore, strict sanitary measures are necessary to control Salmonella contamination during the slaughtering process of poultry. The objective of this study was to determine the occurrence and transmission of Salmonella at a series of steps in the slaughtering process of chicken. A total of 601 samples were collected from a series of slaughtering steps (10 sampling sites) of 26 chicken slaughte

Developmental analysis of SV2 in the embryonic chicken corneal epithelium.

Intraepithelial corneal nerves (ICNs) help protect the cornea as part of the blink reflex and by modulating tear production. ICNs are also thought to regulate the health and homeostasis of the cornea through the release of trophic factors. Disruption to these nerves can lead to vision loss. Despite their importance little is known about how corneal nerves function and even less is known about how the cornea is initially innervated during its embryonic development. Here, we investigated the innervation of the embryonic chicken cornea. Western blot and immunohistochemistry were used to character

Assessing the impact of bacteriophages in the treatment of Salmonella in broiler chickens.

Salmonellosis is one of the main bacterial infections affecting commercial poultry, causing losses to poultry production, and posing a public health concern. Samples from internal organs (liver, cecum and spleen) of one hundred diseased broiler chickens were collected and subjected to Salmonella isolation, identification and serotyping. S. typhimurium and S. enteritidis were selected from the isolated Salmonella to prepare bacteriophages from sewage water taken at broiler farms. An experimental infection of one day old specific pathogen free (SPF) chicks followed by treatment with the prepared…

Early segregation of the adrenal cortex and gonad in chicken embryos.

The adrenal gland is an endocrine organ that plays essential roles in stress responses. This organ consists of two types of tissues, adrenomedulla and adrenocortex, deriving from different embryonic origins. Whereas it is well accepted that the adrenomedulla derives from neural crest cells, the origin of the adrenocortex remains elusive. In addition, the adrenocortex and gonads, two major steroid hormone-producing tissues, have been thought to share the same origin, although the experimental evidence is lacking. In this study, to identify the origin of adrenocortex and to compare it to that of

Sphingolipid abnormalities in cancer multidrug resistance: Chicken or egg?

The cancer multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotype encompasses a myriad of molecular, genetic and cellular alterations resulting from progressive oncogenic transformation and selection. Drug efflux transporters, in particular the MDR P-glycoprotein ABCB1, play an important role in MDR but cannot confer the complete phenotype alone indicating parallel alterations are prerequisite. Sphingolipids are essential constituents of lipid raft domains and directly participate in functionalization of transmembrane proteins, including providing an optimal lipid microenvironment for multidrug transporters, an
