Attitudes and knowledge of parents of preschool children about specific learning disabilities.

INTRODUCTION: Specific learning disorders include dyslexia - reading disorder, dysgraphia - writing disorder, dyspraxia and discoloration - difficulties with mathematical tasks. Along with these disorders, hyperactivity disorder and attention deficit are often associated with these disorders. According to available data, 2/3 of children who have difficulty reading, writing, and counting have a lack of attention. Diagnosing these disorders is an important task for parents, preschools and schools, because it is prerequisite for understanding and treatment. The aim of the research was to gain inf

Month of Conception and Learning Disabilities: A Record-Linkage Study of 801,592 Children.

Learning disabilities have profound, long-lasting health sequelae. Affected children born over the course of 1 year in the United States of America generated an estimated lifetime cost of $51.2 billion. Results from some studies have suggested that autistic spectrum disorder may vary by season of birth, but there have been few studies in which investigators examined whether this is also true of other causes of learning disabilities. We undertook Scotland-wide record linkage of education (annual pupil census) and maternity (Scottish Morbidity Record 02) databases for 801,592 singleton children

Cerebral Palsy and Intellectual Disability in the Children of Women With Chronic Kidney Disease.

BACKGROUND: This study examined the risk of adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes, especially cerebral palsy and intellectual disability, in pregnant women with and without chronic kidney disease and their children. METHOD: In total, 156 pregnancies involving 139 women with chronic kidney disease who were treated at our center between 2001 and 2010 were identified. We also selected 3067 women without chronic kidney disease who delivered their infants without suffering any medical complications during the same period as control groups. Long-term neonatal prognosis was assessed based on the fr

Acute idiopathic transverse myelitis in children: early predictors of relapse and disability.

OBJECTIVE: To identify early prognostic factors of relapse and disability in children presenting with an acute idiopathic transverse myelitis (TM). METHODS: Ninety-five children with acute idiopathic TM from 2 national European cohorts (France and United Kingdom) of CNS demyelinating diseases in children were identified and studied for early factors that predict relapse and disability using logistic regression models. RESULTS: Sixteen (17%) relapsed, with a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis in 13 (14%) and neuromyelitis optica in 3 (3%). Logistic regression revealed 2 main criteria as risk fac

Altered information processing in children with focal epilepsies with and without intellectual disability.

The aim of this exploratory study was to investigate the relationship between focal interictal epileptiform discharges (IEDs), intellectual disability and cortical information processing in children with partial epilepsy. Two groups of patients--Group 1 (n = 9 patients) with focal IEDs and normal IQ and Group 2 (n = 10 patients) with focal IEDs and intellectual disability--were compared with 14 healthy control participants. A computerized choice reaction time task (go/no-go paradigm) was performed and event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded. When an IED occurred during the period between

Issues in the support and disaster preparedness of severely disabled children in affected areas.

Relative to their numbers, more than twice the number of disabled children fell victim to the Great East Japan Earthquake than did normal people. It was important to find out needs and provide support, as the needs of disabled children vulnerable to the disaster, such as a shortage of diapers of the right size for disabled children in the affected areas, were not given priority. In addition, the role of coordinators to spread word of who needed what and where, and linking this to specific support, was important. Regions and authorities need to determine how disabled children are to be evacuate

Applicability of the nonverbal learning disability paradigm for children with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome.

Chromosome 22qll.2 deletion syndrome (22qllDS) is the most common microdeletion in humans. Nonverbal learning disability (NLD) has been used to describe the strengths and deficits of children with 22q11DS, but the applicability of the label for this population has seldom been systematically evaluated. The goal of the current study was to address how well the NLD diagnosis characterizes children and adolescents with 22q11DS. A total of 74 children and adolescents with 22q11DS were given neurocognitive, socioemotional, and academic assessments to measure aspects of NLD. Of the cohort, 20% met at

Perinatal factors in non-disabled ELBW school children and later performance.

AIM: To determine the association between perinatal events and subsequent motor performance, cardiorespiratory endurance and respiratory function in non-disabled extremely low birthweight (ELBW) school children at 12 years of age. METHODS: Forty-eight ELBW infants were included in this study. The Movement Assessment Battery for Children (MABC), VO(2) max score as a measure of cardiorespiratory endurance and respiratory function testing were performed and perinatal variables were extracted from the children's hospital files. Children with MABC score ≤ 15th centile were described as having susp

Expressive vocabulary acquisition in children with intellectual disability: speech or manual signs?

BACKGROUND: The aim of this study was to examine the degree to which children with intellectual disability (ID) depend on manual signs during their expressive vocabulary acquisition, in relation to child and social-environmental characteristics. METHOD: Expressive vocabulary acquisition in speech and manual signs was monitored over a 2-year period in 23 children with ID using parent report. The children's cognitive, communicative, and vocabulary comprehension skills were measured at baseline. Speech-language pathologists' and parents' use of and attitudes towards manual signs were measured us

Ipsilateral printing in children's mirror-writing: a cause of specific learning disabilities?

Previous research has demonstrated that young children produce mirror-image letter-reversals when printing their names in a leftward direction from the midline or right margin of their writing paper. This ability is postulated to be an epiphenomenon of a symmetric, proximal (arm) stage of motor development that ontogenetically precedes lateralization of fine-motor distal (finger) control-a stage in which each arm can be controlled by either side of the brain. From this view, canonical writing in right hemi-space is contralaterally mediated by the left hemisphere and mirror-writing in left hemi

An outbreak of adenovirus type 7 in a residential facility for severely disabled children.

BACKGROUND: Adenoviruses cause a variety of clinical symptoms, involving the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital, and neurologic systems. Only a few of the 55 known serotypes of adenovirus that affect humans can cause outbreaks of respiratory tract infection. AIM: To describe the characteristics and clinical manifestations of severe respiratory disease contracted by 8 physically and cognitively disabled children during a very short outbreak of adenovirus serotype 7 infection in a residential facility. METHODS: The clinical, imaging, and laboratory findings of the patients who were hosp

Visual perception and memory impairments in children at risk of nonverbal learning disabilities.

Visuospatial working memory (VSWM) and visual perception were examined in two groups aged 11-13, one with children displaying symptoms of nonverbal learning disability (NLD) (n = 18) and the other a control group without learning disabilities (n = 18). The two groups were matched for general verbal abilities, age, gender, and socioeconomic level. The children were presented with VSWM tests involving visual and spatial-simultaneous processes, and also with a classical visual illusion, a classical ambiguous figure, as well as visual perception tests specifically devised for the present study. Pain management in intellectually disabled children: Assessment, treatment, and translational research.

The primary focus of pain research in intellectually disabled individuals is still on pain assessment. Several observational pain assessment scales are available, each with its own characteristics, its own target group and its own validated use. Observational studies report differences in the treatment of intra- and postoperative pain of intellectually disabled children and almost all children with intellectual disability have comorbidities that need to be addressed. The scope of research has started to broaden. In this review we aim to answer the question: Can we integrate validated ways of p

Language planning disturbances in children who clutter or have learning disabilities.

The primary objective of this paper is to determine to what extent disturbances in the fluency of language production of children who clutter might be related to, or differ from difficulties in the same underlying processes of language formulation seen in children with learning disabilities. It is hypothesized that an increase in normal dysfluencies and sentence revisions in children who clutter reflect different neurolinguistic process to those of children with learning disabilities. To test this idea, 150 Dutch speaking children, aged 10;6 to 12;11 years, were divided in three groups (clutte

[Neuropsychological findings on memory and learning disabilities in children using the BASIC-MLT].

OBJECTIVES: Unrecognized memory and learning disabilities can affect children's general development and limit therapy success. Differentiated assessment of specificities and severity of the disorder is thus essential for specific interventions. This study makes a case for development-related divergences in coping with modality-specific memory and learning tasks. Divergences have been assumed for auditory tasks. METHODS: Subtest achievements of 403 children in the memory and learning test battery BASIC-MLT were examined by analysis of variance for the factor age (11 age groups from 6-16 years)

Participation of young severely disabled children is influenced by their intrinsic impairments and environment.

A prospective study of the families of young severely disabled children applying to a non-governmental organization for financial support examined the respective contributions of a child's intrinsic impairment and the family's environment to their participation. The study population comprised the families of 600 children of median age 2 years 8 months (range 1y-12y 1mo), of whom 46% had autistic or severe behaviour difficulties, 12% other learning disabilities, 6.8% cerebral palsy, and 10% non-neurological causes of severe disability. Intrinsic impairment was measured with the Health Utilities

Motor performance and disability in Dutch children with haemophilia: a comparison with their healthy peers.

We investigated whether haemophilic children who are on prophylactic therapy differ from their healthy peers in terms of motor performance and disability. Thirty-nine children, aged 4-12 years, with moderate (eight) and severe (31) haemophilia were included. Patients with severe haemophilia received primary prophylactic therapy that was individually tailored. The number of target joints, amount of swelling, range of motion, muscular strength and pain were measured, as well as motor skills and disability. The scores were compared to the normal population. No patients had target joints. Normal r

Issues in the assessment of reading disabilities in L2 children--beliefs and research evidence.

In bilingual and multilingual settings one is constantly challenged by the difficulty of teasing apart phenomena associated with normal second language (L2) reading acquisition from authentic warning signs of reading failure. The bulk of this paper focuses on a critical discussion of a cluster of beliefs that pertain to the issues concerning the diagnosis of reading disability in multilingual and bilingual settings among school children. Findings from available research on reading acquisition among bilingual children and research focusing specifically on the assessment of English-as-a-second l
