Nipah virus as a pandemic threat: Current knowledge, diagnostic gaps, and future research priorities.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly virulent zoonotic pathogen capable of triggering severe outbreaks with pandemic potential. This review consolidates current knowledge on its biology, transmission, pathogenesis, and clinical presentation, alongside recent progress in diagnostics, therapeutics, and vaccine development. Human encroachment into wildlife habitats has intensified interactions with fruit bat reservoirs, driving recurrent spillover events in South and Southeast Asia. Advances in structural virology have elucidated the mechanisms of viral entry, particularly the interaction of the G (atta

Hemosiderosis is associated with increased susceptibility to Yersinia pseudotuberculosis infection in Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata).

Yersinia pseudotuberculosis (Yptb) is a gram-negative bacterium that can cause sporadic fatal infections in humans, domestic animals, and wildlife. We describe an outbreak of Yptb in a captive collection of 222 Seba's short-tailed bats (Carollia perspicillata), 50 of which died of confirmed (39 of 222, 17.6%) or suspected (11 of 222; 5.0%) Yptb infection. Females were more likely to be infected than males (odds ratio: 3.4), and non-pregnant females were more likely to be infected than pregnant females (odds ratio: 13.6). The most common gross lesions were multifocal cream/white discolorations

Morphofunctional Evaluation of the Epididymis and Sperm Survival in a Neotropical Sperm-Storing Vespertilionid Bat: A Possible Conserved Phylogenetic Characteristic.

Yellowish myotis presented four reproductive stages and long-term sperm storage in cauda epididymis. Aiming to investigate the morphofunctional aspects of the epididymis and spermatozoa of yellowish myotis, 48 adult male bats were captured in Santuário do Caraça, Minas Gerais, Brazil, for histomorphometric evaluations of the epididymis and sperm analysis. Yellowish myotis spermatozoa were observed in the caput and corpus epididymis only during the Mature and Regressed stages, coinciding with increased epithelial height in these stages, indicating their possible role in sperm maturation. Diversity and seasonality of ectoparasite burden on two species of Madagascar fruit bat, Eidolon dupreanum and Rousettus madagascariensis.

BACKGROUND: Bats are important reservoir hosts for a variety of pathogens, some of which are transmitted by ectoparasite vectors including mites, fleas, lice, ticks, and bat flies (families Nycteribiidae and Streblidae). All these ectoparasite taxa are known to parasitize two endemic fruit bats of Madagascar, Eidolon dupreanum and Rousettus madagascariensis. We aimed to describe the diversity of ectoparasite infestation for both bat species through morphological observation and DNA barcoding and elucidate ecological and climatic correlates of seasonal nycteribiid parasitism of these hosts. Comparative Cochlear Transcriptomics in Echolocating Bats and Mouse Reveals Hras as Protector Against Noise-Induced Hearing Loss.

Noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL), caused by irreversible cochlear hair cell (HC) damage, lacks effective therapies due to a limited understanding of endogenous protective mechanisms. The echolocating bats exhibit natural resistance to intense noise, and this suggested novel insights into methods to protect against NIHL. Here, through comparative transcriptomic analysis of noise-exposed cochleae from the eastern bent-winged bats (Miniopterus fuliginosus) and mice, the specific transcriptional dynamics in noise-resistant Miniopterus fuliginosus are revealed, thus highlighting potential mechanis

A case report of a cat infected with European bat lyssavirus type 1, the Netherlands, October 2024.

In October 2024, an infection of European bat lyssavirus type 1 was confirmed in a domestic cat in the Netherlands. Several weeks before, the owners had found a dead bat considered to be caught by the cat. Nine persons exposed to the cat received post-exposure prophylaxis and four domestic animals from the same household were quarantined. This report stresses the need for vigilance for rabies in domestic animals in countries where lyssavirus infections in bats are endemic.

Genomic characterization of eight novel Bartonella species from bats and ectoparasites reveals phylogenetic diversity and host adaptation.

Bats are recognized as hosts of diverse Bartonella species, and Bartonella are known agents of human disease. Here, we reported the isolation of 26 Bartonella strains belonging to eight distinct species from two bat species (Myotis laniger and M. adversus) and their ectoparasites (bat flies and bat mites) collected from Chongming County, Hubei Province, China. We obtained whole genome sequences of the bat-borne Bartonella spp. with second and third generation sequencing. The genome size of the bat-borne Bartonella spp. ranged from 1.39 to 1.98 Mb, with the GC content from 35.30%-38.92%. Phylog

Amino acid insertion in Bat MHC-I enhances complex stability and augments peptide presentation.

Bats serve as reservoirs for numerous zoonotic viruses, yet they typically remain asymptomatic owing to their unique immune system. Of particular significance is the MHC-I in bats, which plays crucial role in anti-viral response and exhibits polymorphic amino acid (AA) insertions. This study demonstrated that both 5AA and 3AA insertions enhance the thermal stability of the bat MHC-I complex and enrich the diversity of bound peptides in terms of quantity and length distribution, by stabilizing the 310 helix, a region prone to conformational changes during peptide loading. However, the mismatche

Deviance Detection to Natural Stimuli in Population Responses of the Brainstem of Bats.

Deviance detection describes an increase of neural response strength caused by a stimulus with a low probability of occurrence. This ubiquitous phenomenon has been reported for humans and multiple other species, from subthalamic areas to the auditory cortex. Cortical deviance detection has been well characterized by a range of studies using a variety of different stimuli, from artificial to natural, with and without a behavioral relevance. This allowed the identification of a broad variety of regularity deviations that are detected by the cortex. Moreover, subcortical deviance detection has be

Establishment of a human organoid-based evaluation system for assessing interspecies infection risk of animal-borne coronaviruses.

The COVID-19 pandemic presents a major threat to global public health. Several lines of evidence have shown that the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), along with two other highly pathogenic coronaviruses, SARS-CoV and Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS-CoV) originated from bats. To prevent and control future coronavirus outbreaks, it is necessary to investigate the interspecies infection and pathogenicity risks of animal-related coronaviruses. Currently used infection models, including in vitro cell lines and in vivo animal models, fail to fully mimic the primar

Attempted Transmission of Marburg Virus by Bat-Associated Fleas Thaumapsylla breviceps breviceps (Ischnopsyllidae: Thaumapsyllinae) to the Egyptian Rousette Bat (Rousettus aegyptiacus).

Egyptian rousette bats (ERBs) are implicated as reservoir hosts for Marburg virus (MARV), but natural mechanisms involved in maintenance of MARV in ERB populations remain undefined. A number of hematophagous ectoparasites, including fleas, parasitize bats. Subcutaneous (SC) inoculation of ERBs with MARV consistently results in viremia, suggesting that infectious MARV could be ingested by blood-sucking ectoparasites during feeding. In our study, MARV RNA was detected in fleas that took a blood meal during feeding on viremic bats on days 3, 7, and 11 after SC inoculation. Virus concentration in

Little Brown Bats (Myotis lucifugus) Support the Binding of SARS-CoV-2 Spike and Are Likely Susceptible to SARS-CoV-2 Infection.

Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), believed to have originated from a bat species, can infect a wide range of non-human hosts. Bats are known to harbor hundreds of coronaviruses capable of spillover into human populations. Recent studies have shown a significant variation in the susceptibility among bat species to SARS-CoV-2 infection. We show that little brown bats (LBB) express angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 receptor and the transmembrane serine protease 2, which are accessible to and support SARS-CoV-2 binding. All-atom molecular dynamics (MD) simulations reveale

Genomic screening of 16 UK native bat species through conservationist networks uncovers coronaviruses with zoonotic potential.

There has been limited characterisation of bat-borne coronaviruses in Europe. Here, we screened for coronaviruses in 48 faecal samples from 16 of the 17 bat species breeding in the UK, collected through a bat rehabilitation and conservationist network. We recovered nine complete genomes, including two novel coronavirus species, across six bat species: four alphacoronaviruses, a MERS-related betacoronavirus, and four closely related sarbecoviruses. We demonstrate that at least one of these sarbecoviruses can bind and use the human ACE2 receptor for infecting human cells, albeit suboptimally. Ad

Genomic Characterization of a Relative of Mumps Virus in Lesser Dawn Bats of Southeast Asia.

The importance of genomic surveillance on emerging diseases continues to be highlighted with the ongoing SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Here, we present an analysis of a new bat-borne mumps virus (MuV) in a captive colony of lesser dawn bats (Eonycteris spelaea). This report describes an investigation of MuV-specific data originally collected as part of a longitudinal virome study of apparently healthy, captive lesser dawn bats in Southeast Asia (BioProject ID PRJNA561193) which was the first report of a MuV-like virus, named dawn bat paramyxovirus (DbPV), in bats outside of Africa. Reemergence of Marburgvirus disease: Update on current control and prevention measures and review of the literature.

In 1967, the very first case of the Marburgvirus disease (MVD) was detected in Germany and Serbia sequentially. Since then, MVD has been considered one of the most serious and deadly infectious diseases in the world with a case-fatality rate between 23% and 90% and a substantial number of recorded deaths. Marburgvirus belongs to the family of Filoviridae (filoviruses), which causes severe viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF). Some major risk factors for human infections are close contact with African fruit bats, MVD-infected non-human primates, and MVD-infected individuals. Currently, there is no vac

A mathematical model of Marburg virus disease outbreaks and the potential role of vaccination in control.

BACKGROUND: Marburg virus disease is an acute haemorrhagic fever caused by Marburg virus. Marburg virus is zoonotic, maintained in nature in Egyptian fruit bats, with occasional spillover infections into humans and nonhuman primates. Although rare, sporadic cases and outbreaks occur in Africa, usually associated with exposure to bats in mines or caves, and sometimes with secondary human-to-human transmission. Outbreaks outside of Africa have also occurred due to importation of infected monkeys. Although all previous Marburg virus disease outbreaks have been brought under control without vaccin

Whole Genome Sequencing for Rapid Characterization of Rabies Virus Using Nanopore Technology.

Genomic data can be used to track the transmission and geographic spread of infectious diseases. However, the sequencing capacity required for genomic surveillance remains limited in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), where dog-mediated rabies and/or rabies transmitted by wildlife such as vampire bats pose major public health and economic concerns. We present here a rapid and affordable sample-to-sequence-to-interpretation workflow using nanopore technology. Protocols for sample collection and the diagnosis of rabies are briefly described, followed by details of the optimized whole

Severe zoonotic viruses carried by different species of bats and their regional distribution.

BACKGROUND: Bats have garnered increased attention in the field of life sciences for their typical biological characteristics of carrying a variety of zoonotic viruses without disease, long lifespans, low tumorigenesis rates, and high metabolism. When it was found that bats can carry the rabies virus, over 60 years of research revealed that bats host over 4100 distinct viruses, including Ebola virus and SARS-CoV. OBJECTIVES: This paper primarily reviews the profiles of zoonotic viruses carried by bats across various regions globally. The review aims to provide a foundation and reference for f
