Choroidal osteoma in a preterm infant.

Choroidal osteoma (CO) is a rare, benign, and usually unilateral intraocular tumor composed of mature bone affecting the choroid. It appears as slightly elevated, yellowish-white, or orange choroidal mass with well-defined borders. It is commonly encountered in young female adults. Here, we report findings of a 4-week-old premature baby with CO in her left eye which was detected during a routine examination for "retinopathy of prematurity." We believe that this case is the youngest patient reported with CO which showing that this pathology can be encountered even in a newborn.

Right visual loss due to choroidal metastasis of a papillary adenocarcinoma of the lung: a case report.

The symptomatic choroidal metastasis is a rare manifestation of lung cancer. The aim of this study was to present a clinical case of choroidal metastasis associated with multiple intracerebral metastases from a papillary adenocarcinoma of the lung diagnosed simultaneously with its metastases. We present the case of a 40-year-old male patient, smoker, admitted to the Neurosurgery Clinic II, "Prof. Dr. Nicolae Oblu" Emergency Hospital, Iassy, Romania, for right hemiparesis, headache, right visual loss, dysphonia and swallowing disorders occurring six days earlier. Previous medical history showed

Choroidal metastases from thymic carcinoma during pregnancy: Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Rare sites of metastases, atypical symptoms and paraneoplastic syndromes are often neglected or misinterpreted, especially when they represent early symptoms of an underlying malignant disease. Hence, an interdisciplinary approach to these patients is essential to avoid tumor progression and metastatic spread in order to provide curative treatment options to the patients. We here report the case of a young woman presenting with visual loss which led to diagnosis of a thymic carcinoma. CASE PRESENTATION: A 28-year old white woman presented with subacute loss of vision in the last t

Bilateral choroidal metastasis from carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland.

The histological, clinical and angiographic findings are reported of a 34-year-old man with bilateral visual loss who had left parotidectomy with subsequent radiotherapy due to carcinoma ex pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland 1 year before. Funduscopy disclosed choroidal masses with surrounding serous retinal detachment in both posterior poles. At the time of ocular diagnosis, lung, pleura and pharynx metastases had recently been revealed. Because of the extent of disease and its poor prognosis, no treatment was offered. Although parotid gland carcinoma usually spreads via lymphatics, cho

Ultrasound biomicroscopic imaging of the anterior aspect of peripheral choroidal melanomas.

PURPOSE: To correlate ultrasound biomicroscopic features of the anterior aspect of peripheral choroidal melanoma with respect to histopathology. METHODS: We examined 17 eyes of 17 patients who had clinically diagnosed peripheral choroidal melanomas that approached the ora serrata or extended into the ciliary body and who had been assessed with ultrasound biomicroscopy before enucleation. Comparisons were made between anterior tumor margins imaged by ultrasound biomicroscopy and histopathologic specimens. Anatomic features noted on ultrasound biomicroscopy before enucleation were correlated wi

Cytopathologic diagnosis of benign lesions simulating choroidal melanomas.

In three cases of benign pigmented lesions (one melanocytoma and two pigment epithelial adenomas) there was evidence of tumor growth and the lesions were referred to us as uveal melanomas. The fine needle aspiration biopsy specimens were correctly interpreted in the operating room as being benign tumors. The pigment granules in these benign pigmented lesions are much larger than are observed in uveal melanomas. When they were visible through the heavy pigmentation, the cellular detail appeared benign. In two cases the tumors were successfully resected with cyclochroidectomy techniques and the

[Postradiation secondary glaucoma and prevention measures].

The authors have examined the possibility of preventing the development of secondary glaucoma after eye irradiation with a narrow medicinal proton beam. Twenty-eight patients with cilio-choroidal melanoma were involved in the study, 7 male and 21 female ones, aged 48.4 on an average. The authors' findings evidence that postradiation changes in the anterior segment of the eye, resulting from radiation iridocyclitis, are mainly responsible for the development of secondary glaucoma. Preliminary laser-effected formation of iridal coloboma is conducive to a normal flow in the anterior chamber at th

Ependymomas of childhood. I. Histological survey and clinicopathological correlation.

We have conducted a correlative histological and clinical study on 34 cases of childhood ependymomas encountered at the Children's Memorial Hospital from 1953 to 1974. The cases were classified into grades A, B and C according to the extent of cytological differentiation and the correlation between the histological grades and the clinical outcome was obtained. It is concluded that the biological behavior of an ependymoma could be predicted to a large extent by the degree of cytological differentiation and by its anatomical location. A large share of the infratentorial ependymomas are well diff

[The prevalence of bilateral malignant uveal melanoma].

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanoma of the choroid is the most common ocular primary malignancy, but is still a rare tumour. The occurrence of bilateral uveal melanoma is exceedingly rare. The probability of any one individual developing bilateral melanoma is estimated to be 1 to 50 million. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective search of the photo database of patients between 1970 and 2006 with uveal melanoma was performed. RESULTS: Four patients with bilateral melanoma were identified. The case reports of the two females and two males are presented. CONCLUSIONS: In summary, bilateral primary

Primary extracutaneous malignant melanoma: a comprehensive review with emphasis on treatment.

Extracutaneous malignant melanomas (EMM) require special consideration in the field of oncology due to their rareness and--depending on the localization--the frequency of late diagnosis with consecutive poor prognosis. Only 4-5% of all primary melanomas do not arise from the skin. Most frequently they originate from the mucous membranes lining the respiratory, digestive, and genitourinary tracts or in the eyes as well as in the cerebral meninges. Extracutaneous melanomas are considered to be biologically more aggressive than cutaneous melanomas. The Clark level and Breslow index used for evalu

Polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy following photodynamic therapy for choroidal hemangioma.

PURPOSE: To report a case of circumscribed choroidal hemangioma (CCH) that responded to photodynamic therapy (PDT) but 3 years later developed polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy (PCV) with exudative retinopathy. METHODS: Case report. RESULTS: A 59-year-old woman with a juxtapapillary CCH in her left eye was treated with a single 83-second, 7.5 mm PDT laser spot at 689 nm (50 J/cm2) 15 minutes after the injection of intravenous verteporfin (6 mg/m2). Three years later, the patient presented with photopsia in her left eye. Fundus examination of the left eye showed CCH regressed completely to a

Choroidal metastases and exudative retinal detachment in medullary thyroid carcinoma.

The uvea is the most common site for ocular metastasis. Within this, the choroid is commonly involved as compared with the iris and the ciliary body. This is due to the distribution of blood supply, which is greater in the choroid than in the iris and ciliary body. Ocular metastasis mostly occurs from breast and lung cancer. Choroidal metastasis from thyroid carcinoma is rare. The gold standard test for diagnosis of choroidal metastasis is fluorescein angiography. We present the case of a man in his early 30s who reported a concern of diminished vision in the right eye for 2 weeks. Fundus exam
