Urbanization and climate change impacts on surface water quality: Enhancing the resilience by reducing impervious surfaces.

Climate change and urbanization are key factors affecting the future of water quality in urbanized catchments. The work reported in this paper is an evaluation of the combined and relative impact of climate change and urbanization on the water quality of receiving water bodies in the context of a highly urbanized watershed served by a combined sewer system (CSS) in northern Italy. The impact is determined by an integrated modelling study involving two years of field campaigns. The results obtained from the case study show that impervious urban surfaces and rainfall intensity are significant pr

Where Can a Threatened Pheasant Persist? Identifying Climate Change Refugia and Mapping Protection Gaps in China.

Climate change and human activities are widely recognized as major drivers of global biodiversity loss. The Brown Eared Pheasant (Crossoptilon mantchuricum), a ground-dwelling avian species unique to China, is confined to a highly fragmented range and faces persistent long-term threats. To devise robust and site-specific preservation strategies, it is imperative to elucidate the species' sensitivity to climate change and pinpoint high-priority protection areas. In this study, we integrated field surveys, ensemble species distribution modelling, Marxan systematic conservation planning, and GAP

Environmental Risk Factors for Pediatric Epistaxis vary by Climate Zone.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVE: Prior studies have provided variable results regarding environmental risk factors for epistaxis. These studies were conducted in varying climate zones, which may explain discrepancies in results. The objective of this study is to investigate correlations between season, temperature, and humidity on frequency of pediatric epistaxis across climate zones. METHODS: Children seen in the outpatient setting for epistaxis were identified from the 2007-2010 IBM MarketScan database. Climate zones were assigned according to International Energy Conservation Code (IECC) classi

Climate Precursors of Satellite Water Marker Index for Spring Cholera Outbreak in Northern Bay of Bengal Coastal Regions.

Cholera is a water-borne infectious disease that affects 1.3 to 4 million people, with 21,000 to 143,000 reported fatalities each year worldwide. Outbreaks are devastating to affected communities and their prospects for development. The key to support preparedness and public health response is the ability to forecast cholera outbreaks with sufficient lead time. How Vibrio cholerae survives in the environment outside a human host is an important route of disease transmission. Thus, identifying the environmental and climate drivers of these pathogens is highly desirable. Here, we elucidate for t

Nitrous oxide dominates greenhouse gas emissions from hydropower's reservoirs in China from 2020 to 2060.

China is ambitious to increase its hydropower share to mitigate climate changes. The greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from hydroelectric reservoirs may hinder the climate goal. The spatio-temporal patterns of such emissions under future climate changes at the national scale are not clearly addressed. In this study, we evaluate these emissions from 79 hydroelectric reservoirs across China (61.22 % of the national hydropower generation) in 2020, covering carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), and nitrous oxide (N2O), using the G-res (Greenhouse Gas Reservoir) tool and Integrated Model to Assess the

Synergistic effects of climate change and nitrogen use on future nitric oxide emissions from China's croplands.

Accurate quantification of soil nitric oxide (NO) emissions can establish a scientific foundation for developing targeted strategies to mitigate emissions, thereby reducing their environmental impact. Using a database with 476 field measurements across China, a NO emission model was constructed by employing four machine learning algorithms including Extreme Gradient Boosting (XGBoost), Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN). Our validation with independent observational data revealed that the XGBoost model performed the best, achieving a R2 of 0.6

Instability in the geological regulation of Earth's climate.

Negative feedback between climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2), mediated by the weathering of silicate minerals on land, is thought to provide the primary regulation of Earth's climate on geological timescales. By contrast, we found that faster feedbacks involving organic matter are not only critical to Earth system recovery but can also create unexpected instability. Our Earth system model experiments show how sedimentary organic carbon burial, amplified by redox-sensitive phosphorus regeneration, can outweigh silicate weathering and paradoxically drive climate overcooling in response

Estimating the effects of temperature on transmission of the human malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum.

Despite concern that climate change could increase the human risk to malaria in certain areas, the temperature dependency of malaria transmission is poorly characterized. Here, we use a mechanistic model fitted to experimental data to describe how Plasmodium falciparum infection of the African malaria vector, Anopheles gambiae, is modulated by temperature, including its influences on parasite establishment, conversion efficiency through parasite developmental stages, parasite development rate, and overall vector competence. We use these data, together with estimates of the survival of infected

Climate change implications for the distribution of the babesiosis and anaplasmosis tick vector, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus.

Climate change ranks among the most important issues globally, affecting geographic distributions of vectors and pathogens, and inducing losses in livestock production among many other damaging effects. We characterized the potential geographic distribution of the ticks Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus, an important vector of babesiosis and anaplasmosis globally. We evaluated potential geographic shifts in suitability patterns for this species in two periods (2050 and 2070) and under two emissions scenarios (RCPs 4.5 and 8.5). Our results anticipate increases in suitability worldwide, parti

How does service workers' behavior affect their health? Service climate as a moderator in the service behavior-health relationships.

To address the question of whether providing high-quality service deteriorates or benefits workers' health, a contingency model was tested that focused on service climate as a moderator. This interacts with service behavior to affect workers' perceptions of emotional exhaustion, hence their physical and mental health. Findings of this study with 328 nurses from 66 nursing units indicated that congruent conditions of service climate and behaviors benefited workers' health, whereas incongruent conditions affected it adversely. The findings are discussed in light of stress, and emotion-work persp

Presentation of a dummy representing suit for simulation of huMAN heatloss (DRESSMAN).

DRESSMAN designates a novel dummy for climate measurements that allows predicting the human thermal comfort experienced inside rooms (buildings, vehicles, aircraft, railway compartments etc.) on the basis of indoor climate measurements. Measurements can be listed in tabular form and can also be represented by way of color gradations in a virtual 3D human model. Optionally, visualization may be rendered during or after measurement. Due to its very quick response, DRESSMAN is particularly suited for nonstationary processes.

Global Risk Assessment of the Invasive Insect Thaumatotibia leucotreta to Citrus Based on its Potential Distribution.

The false-codling moth (FCM), Thaumatotibia leucotreta Meyrick (Lepidoptera: Tortricidae), is a globally recognized quarantine pest responsible for substantial economic losses in the southern African citrus industry. Driven by international trade and climate change, FCM poses a potential threat to regions beyond its native range. In this study, we employed the MaxEnt model to predict suitable habitats for FCM under near-current and future climate scenarios based on 141 global occurrence data and 19 bioclimatic variables. The model performed excellently with an AUC of 0.965. The key bioclimatic

Relation of the maximum temperature and relative humidity close to the insemination with the tropical milking criollo heifer's gestation in three seasons.

The high climatic variability of hot climates of the intertropical zone reduces cattle fertility. In dairy cows in temperates zones, the THI has been used to evaluate the temperature and relative humidity (RH) joint effect in reproduction, but its use is not recommended in all geographic zones; in hot climates, the maximum temperature (Tmax) can provide more convenient information than THI. The objective of this study was to determine the artificial insemination (AI) service seasons and their joint effect with the maximum temperature and relative humidity of the previous seven days, the servic

Temperature extremes, density dependence, and southern pine beetle (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) population dynamics in east Texas.

Previous studies of the southern pine beetle, Dendroctonus frontalis Zimm., established that its population in east Texas responds to a delayed density-dependent process, whereas no clear role of climate has been determined. We tested two biological hypotheses for the influence of extreme temperatures on annual southern pine beetle population growth in the context of four alternative hypotheses for density-dependent population regulation. The significance of climate variables and their interaction with population regulation depended on the model of density dependence. The best model included b

The Pieris climate accords: how climate change shapes molecular interactions between the butterfly Pieris rapae (Lepidoptera: Pieridae) and its host plant Arabidopsis thaliana (Brassicales: Brassicaceae).

Global temperatures are projected to rise by approximately 1.5 °C between 2030 and 2050, driven by increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) levels. Such rapid climate change is predicted to drive correspondingly rapid change in animals and plants, particularly those that humans depend on for food and security. Here, we investigated how increased temperature and CO2 may affect herbivore-host plant interactions using controlled experiments with a widespread agricultural pest, the cabbage white butterfly Pieris rapae, and a model host plant, Arabidopsis thaliana. Pieris rapae and A. thaliana w

Attributing climate-related health burdens in Southeast Asia: a scoping review.

Attributing health outcomes to climate-related exposures is essential for informing adaptive policy, yet Southeast Asia, one of the world's most climate-vulnerable regions, remains critically underrepresented in attribution research. To address this gap, we conducted a scoping review of studies linking climate exposures to health burdens in the region. Although growing evidence demonstrates substantial health impacts from air pollution, heat, and extreme weather, the regional research landscape remains critically imbalanced, marked by neglect of other major hazards-including floods, droughts,

Exploring the Effects of Climate Variability on Diarrheal Diseases, Malaria, and Malnutrition in Children Under Five Years in Revuè Sub-Basin, Manica Province, Mozambique.

Transmission of water, vector, and foodborne diseases tends to increase with climate variability, disproportionately affecting vulnerable communities. Globally, this dynamic contributes to adverse health outcomes in low- and middle-income countries such as Mozambique. Nevertheless, the influence of climate variability on disease patterns remains unclear. We assessed the potential relationship between climate variables and diseases, including diarrheal diseases, malaria, and malnutrition, in four districts around the Revuè sub-basin. An ecological, longitudinal, retrospective study conducted fr
