Eating Behavior Traits, Weight Loss Attempts, and Vertebral Dimensions Among the General Northern Finnish Population.

STUDY DESIGN: A population-based birth cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the associations of eating behavior traits and weight loss attempts with vertebral size among the general Northern Finnish population. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Vertebral fragility fractures are a typical manifestation of osteoporosis, and small vertebral dimensions are a well-established risk factor for vertebral fracturing. Previous studies have associated cognitive eating restraint and diet-induced weight loss with deteriorated bone quality at various skeletal sites, but data on vertebral geometry are lacking.

Seriously Considering Humor as a Therapeutic Support for Addiction Recovery.

Humor interventions can increase happiness and reduce mental health symptoms such as depression and anxiety. Several authors have direct lived experience of these benefits, with humor being transformative early and throughout their addiction recovery. Yet the scientific study of humor as a support for recovery remains largely unexamined. We argue this is a missed opportunity and offer a rationale for advancing this area of research. We propose that humor aligns with putative therapeutic processes central to recovery: cognitive (i.e., psychological flexibility), reward (i.e., non-substance rewa

Dynamic reconfigurations of brain subnetworks in female patients with alcohol use disorder or bulimia nervosa: a resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

INTRODUCTION: The brain forms a complex functional brain network. This network is dynamically reconfigured to support various cognitive processes. Research on brain network dynamics in patients with alcohol use disorder (AUD) or bulimia nervosa (BN), two highly comorbid psychiatric disorders, remains limited. Previous studies showed altered static network patterns, highlighting that the network is disturbed, but implicitly ignoring network dynamics. This study investigates dynamic network reconfigurations in female patients with AUD or BN and healthy controls (HC). METHODS: Resting-state func

Task-prioritization and balance recovery strategies used by young healthy adults during dual-task walking.

BACKGROUND: Maintaining dynamic balance is an essential task during walking, with foot-placement playing a critical role. Dual-task studies analyzing steady-state walking with cognitive loads have found healthy adults prioritize cognitive task performance at the expense of maintaining control of their balance. However, few studies have focused on the influence of cognitive loads on more difficult motor tasks, such as walking with unexpected foot-placement perturbations. Individuals often recover from a loss of balance using an ankle or hip strategy; however, how cognitive loads affect these ba

Space and cognition: the measurement of behavioral functions during a 6-day space mission.

We measured nonspecific (attention, mental flexibility, psychomotor speed) and visuospatial cognitive processing in a single case study during a 6-d visit on the Russian orbital complex MIR, using computer-based psychometric tasks. Reaction times and accuracy scores showed only minor, nonsignificant changes between preflight, flight, and postflight assessments. These results suggest that several behavioral functions, among them complex visuospatial processing skills, remain essentially intact on short space visits, provided that the performing subject experiences no symptoms of space motion si

Effect of simultaneous exercise and cognitive training on executive functions, baroreflex sensitivity, and pre-frontal cortex oxygenation in healthy older adults: a pilot study.

Aging is characterized by cognitive decline affecting daily functioning. To manage this socio-economic challenge, several non-pharmacological methods such as physical, cognitive, and combined training are proposed. Although there is an important interest in this subject, the literature is still heterogeneous. The superiority of simultaneous training compared to passive control and physical training alone seems clear but very few studies compared simultaneous training to cognitive training alone. The aim of this pilot study was to investigate the effect of simultaneous exercise and cognitive tr

Effects of a Secondary Cognitive Task on Psychological and Stretch Performance.

Extensive research supports the positive effects of stretching on joint flexibility. During stretching, an individual's perceptions of stretch-related discomfort and pain negatively influence affective response. This study examined the effects of a dissociative attentional strategy on performance and perception during stretching. To induce dissociation, participants completed a secondary cognitive task (mental math) during passive and active static stretching. Participants (n = 16) stretched in the following conditions: (1) active-mental math, (2) active-control, (3) passive-mental math, and (

Effects of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) at different cortical targets on cognition in obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD): an exploratory analysis.

Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) holds promise as a treatment for obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Patients with OCD show impairment in specific domains of cognitive flexibility and response inhibition. We previously reported that tDCS produced a positive clinical effect on OCD symptoms. Here, we report a secondary analysis of neurocognitive data. In this randomized, double-blind, sham-controlled, crossover, multicenter feasibility study, adults with a diagnosis of OCD according to the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders, fifth edition (DSM-5) received three…

Beneficial effects of a multidomain cognitive rehabilitation program for traumatic brain injury-associated diffuse axonal injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Neuropsychological rehabilitation is a crucial component of medical care for patients with diffuse axonal injury (DAI). However, current cognitive intervention programs directed to favor the training of specific domains individually have shown controversial results. Here, we evaluated the effectiveness of a neuropsychological rehabilitation program directed to favor training of attention, memory, visuospatial abilities, and executive functioning together in a patient with severe traumatic brain injury (TBI)-associated DAI. Mapping the trajectory of acute mild-stroke cognitive recovery using serial computerised cognitive assessment.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive impairment is common post-stroke. There is a need to understand patterns of early cognitive recovery post-stroke to guide both clinical and research practice. The aim of the study was to map the trajectory of cognitive recovery during the first week to 90-days post-stroke using serial computerised assessment. METHOD: An observational cohort study recruited consecutive stroke patients admitted to a stroke unit within 48 hours of onset. Cognitive function was assessed using the computerised Cambridge Neuropsychological Test Automated Battery (CANTAB) daily for seven days

The Psychosocial Pathways of Expectancy-Value Beliefs, Physical Fitness, and Executive Function Among Adolescents.

Background/Objectives: Adequate physical fitness has been associated with cognitive health among adolescents, and psychosocial processes may help explain this relationship. However, evidence regarding the mechanisms linking physical fitness and cognitive health remains limited. Guided by expectancy-value theory, this study examined the direct and indirect effects of expectancy-value beliefs on executive function through physical fitness among adolescents. Methods: A prospective research design was used. Participants were 424 adolescents (58% female; Mage = 12.72 years, SD = 0.93) recruited fro
