Investigating daily abusive supervision as antecedent of subordinates' low psychological detachment and relaxation during nonwork time: A diary study.

Recovery from work is highly relevant for employees, yet understanding the interpersonal antecedents of impaired recovery experiences remains unclear. Specifically, because former research neglected supervisor behaviors as a predictor of impaired recovery and abusive supervision is a core stressor, we examine daily abusive supervision as a predictor of subordinates' recovery experiences (i.e., psychological detachment and relaxation). We draw on research on the recovery paradox and propose that psychological detachment and relaxation will be impaired on days with high abusive supervision, alth

Posttraumatic cognitions about the self are associated with depression symptoms in veterans endorsing a history of assaultive military sexual trauma.

Depressive symptoms are a commonly observed yet understudied mental health sequalae of military sexual trauma (MST). Prior research supports the relationship between negative posttraumatic cognitions (NPCs) and the onset and course of trauma symptoms more broadly. We hypothesized that NPCs would be associated with depression symptoms in veterans endorsing a history of MST, specifically assaultive type MST. Our clinical sample included veterans presenting for treatment related to assaultive MST (N = 158; 70.9% female, 65.2% White, 27.8% Black). Participants completed self-report measures of pos

From the infant to the geriatric patient-Strategies for inhalation therapy in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

Inhalation therapy represents the standard of care in children, adolescents as well as in young, middle-aged and geriatric adults with asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. However, there are only few recommendations for the choice of inhalation devices, which consider both, age-specific limitations in young and geriatric patients. Transition concepts are lacking. In this narrative review, the available device technologies and the evidence for age-specific problems are discussed. Pressurized metered-dose inhalers may be favoured in patients who fulfill all cognitive, coordinative an

Mediators of change in online mindfulness-based cognitive therapy: A secondary analysis of a randomized trial of mindful mood balance.

OBJECTIVE: Digital delivery of mindfulness-based cognitive therapy through the Mindful Mood Balance (MMB) program is clinically effective (Segal et al., 2020); however, the mechanisms through which this program delivers its benefits have not been established. METHOD: This study investigates the differential impact of the MMB program paired with usual depression care (UDC) compared to UDC alone on the putative targets of self-reported mindfulness, decentering, and rumination and the extent to which change in these targets mediates subsequent depressive relapse among a sample of predominantly W

PTSD symptoms and tinnitus severity: An analysis of veterans with posttraumatic headaches.

OBJECTIVE: Tinnitus and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) are among the top service-connected disabilities within the Veterans Health Administration. Extant research shows that there is considerable overlap between tinnitus-related distress and PTSD, including sleep difficulty, irritability, hyperarousal, and concentration problems. However, no studies have prospectively examined the relationship between the two disorders. The purpose of this study was to examine that relationship. METHOD: Participants (N = 112) with posttraumatic headache completed measures of tinnitus and PTSD. Correlati

Anger, guilt, and repeated cooperation in social dilemmas.

A consistent finding in behavioral economics is that in social dilemma situations in which individuals must decide between individual and group welfare, cooperation declines over time eventually resulting in noncooperation. Extant theorizing addressing phenomena such as adaptive belief-learning focus solely on cognitive explanations. Based on the appraisal-tendency framework, we propose and show that the development of cooperation has a strong emotional component. Others' actual cooperative behavior compared to their expected cooperative behavior does not only result in adapting beliefs (cogni

Children use common knowledge to solve coordination problems.

Recent work suggests that common knowledge is an important cognitive mechanism for coordinating prosocial behavior, in part because it reduces uncertainty about others' cooperative behavior. However, it remains unclear whether children also rely on common knowledge to solve coordination problems. Here we examined whether 6- to 9-year-old children (N = 133) from the United States were more likely to attempt to coordinate when they had common knowledge about a joint payoff. Participants saw 3 vignettes that modeled the structure of a 2-player coordination problem and were provided with common kn

Clinical utility and psychometric properties of the Apathy Evaluation Scale.

The Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES) is a tool utilized with individuals with brain injury, neurocognitive disorders, and other mixed populations to quantify and characterize apathy in adults. The scale "treats apathy as a psychological dimension defined by simultaneous deficits in the overt behavioral, cognitive, and emotional concomitants of goal-directed behavior." It has three versions: self-rated (AES-S), clinician-rated (AES-C), and informant-rated (AES-I). Using factor analysis, Marin and colleagues identified three factors for the scale, including general apathy, disinterest or amotivatio

Pimping inhibition: Anodal tDCS enhances stop-signal reaction time.

The stop-signal task (SST) is assumed to reliably measure response inhibition; specifically, in this task participants sometimes have to withhold a response according to the onset of a sudden cue. The response-stopping process is estimated by a stochastic model that delivers the stop-signal reaction time (SSRT; Verbruggen & Logan, 2009), that is, the latency to inhibit prepotent responses. The right dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (rDLPFC) plays a key role in goal directed cognitive control in general and particularly an increased activation has been associated with better SST performance (that

[Specialized geriatric care in intensive care units: from frailty to functional prognosis].

BACKGROUND: Intensive care units (ICUs) increasingly treat very old adults with multimorbidity, frailty, and high medication burden. Chronological age alone is a poor proxy for benefit and prognosis; premorbid function, vulnerability (frailty), and cognitive reserve are pivotal. European cohorts of ICU patients aged ≥ 80 years show a high prevalence of frailty (Clinical Frailty Scale [CFS] ≥ 5 around 43%) and an independent association with 30-day mortality (e.g., hazard ratio [HR] ~1.5 in very old ICU patients [VIP] 1). VIP2 confirmed the prognostic contribution of CFS after adjustment includ…

Migraine, Brain Glucose Metabolism and the "Neuroenergetic" Hypothesis: A Scoping Review.

Increasing evidence suggests that migraine may be the result of an impaired brain glucose metabolism. Several studies have reported brain mitochondrial dysfunction, impaired brain glucose metabolism and gray matter volume reduction in specific brain areas of migraineurs. Furthermore, peripheral insulin resistance, a condition demonstrated in several studies, may extend to the brain, leading to brain insulin resistance. This condition has been proven to downregulate insulin receptors, both in astrocytes and neurons, triggering a reduction in glucose uptake and glycogen synthesis, mainly during

ADAM10 hyperactivation acts on piccolo to deplete synaptic vesicle stores in Huntington's disease.

Synaptic dysfunction and cognitive decline in Huntington's disease (HD) involve hyperactive A disintegrin and metalloproteinase domain-containing protein 10 (ADAM10). To identify the molecular mechanisms through which ADAM10 is associated with synaptic dysfunction in HD, we performed an immunoaffinity purification-mass spectrometry (IP-MS) study of endogenous ADAM10 in the brains of wild-type and HD mice. We found that proteins implicated in synapse organization, synaptic plasticity, and vesicle and organelles trafficking interact with ADAM10, suggesting that it may act as hub protein at the e

Integrating retrogenesis theory to Alzheimer's disease pathology: insight from DTI-TBSS investigation of the white matter microstructural integrity.

Microstructural abnormalities in white matter (WM) are often reported in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and may reflect primary or secondary circu … and progression, fiber localization, concurrent risk factors (i.e., vascular disease, gender), and cognitive reserve. The use of DTI multiple indices in addition to other standard multimodal methods in dementia research may help to determine the contribution of retrogenesis hypothesis to the understanding of neuropathological hallmarks that lead to AD.

Effect of the XbaI polymorphism of estrogen receptor alpha on postmenopausal gray matter.

The frequent polymorphism XbaI (A351G) in the estrogen receptor alpha (ERalpha) gene has been associated with some postmenopausal pathologies' risk such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) or cognitive decline. In the present study, we explored whether the XbaI polymorphism leads to different gray matter volumes using voxel-based morphometry (VBM) on 20 magnetic resonance images of healthy postmenopausal women. Subjects carrying the less common XbaI/X allele were contrasted to non-carriers in groups well balanced by relevant confounding variables. The XbaI/X allele carriers displayed clusters ranging

Cerebellar atrophy as a delayed manifestation of chronic carbon disulfide poisoning.

A 70-year-old man developed a slowly progressive cerebellar syndrome after having been exposed to carbon disulfide (CS2) in a viscose rayon plant for 27 years. Ataxia, dysmetria, dysarthria and adiadochokinesia appeared 7 years after retirement from work (at age 54), and were later accompanied by cognitive deterioration, dysmnesia, spatio-temporal disorientation, emotional lability, and paranoid-obsessive disturbances. Brain computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed advanced global cerebellar atrophy, and a picture of less severe cerebrocortical atrophy. The case ill

Beyond Chronological Age: Frailty, Vulnerability, and Invasive Decision-Making in Older Adults with Acute Coronary Syndromes.

Older adults represent a growing proportion of patients presenting with acute coronary syndromes (ACS), yet they remain a highly heterogeneous population in terms of biological reserve, comorbidity burden, functional status, cognitive performance, and recovery potential. Chronological age alone is an insufficient basis for invasive decision-making, as it may lead to both therapeutic nihilism and disproportionate treatment escalation. Frailty has emerged as a clinically meaningful construct that captures vulnerability to acute stressors and may refine prognostic assessment beyond traditional ca

Weight changes and physical activity in Parkinson's disease: converging markers of energy balance, disease progression, and lifestyle-based care.

Weight changes are common but often overlooked in Parkinson's disease (PD), occurring across prodromal, early, and advanced disease stages. Weight loss may reflect increased energy expenditure, dysautonomia, dysphagia, gastrointestinal dysfunction, altered appetite, and involvement of central pathways regulating hunger, satiety, and reward. Conversely, weight gain may occur in relation to dopaminergic treatment, impulse-control or binge-eating behaviours, reduced mobility, and post-surgical changes. Emerging longitudinal data suggest that weight variability is not merely a nutritional issue, b
