REASONS FOR PERFORMING STUDY: Imidocarb, an effective treatment for piroplasmosis, may cause colic and diarrhoea in horses. Atropine and glycopyrrolate are anticholinergics that could reduce the adverse effects of imidocarb. However, atropine and glycopyrrolate inhibit gastrointestinal motility, potentially causing ileus and colic.

Functional disorders of the gastrointestinal tract in infants and children are very frequent. To the most common belong: infant colic, regurgitation and functional constipation. In the year 2016 modified IV Rome criteria of functional gastrointestinal disorders were published. In the current work the authors discuss diagnostic criteria and therapy in regurgitation, rumination syndrome in infants, cyclic vomiting syndrome, infant colic, infant dyschezia and functional constipation in children younger than four years.

Emergencies include testicular torsion, renal colic, or epididymitis, while longer symptom durations may be associated with varicoceles, spermatoceles, or hydroceles. Treatment of urological groin pain depends on the underlying condition and includes both conservative and surgical measures. Postoperative intussusception in the newborn is an infrequent condition. A 17-day-old female with duodenal stenosis and malrotation underwent excision of the membrane in the duodenum and incidental appendicectomy. Postoperatively, a ceco-colic type of intussusception occurred, necessitating a right hemicolectomy. We speculate that the causative factors are twofolds: the embedded appendiceal stump, a polyp-like protrusion that became a lead point, and the non-fixation of the ileocecal mesentery, which facilitated a ceco-colic type of invagination.

The histologic study on six horses of the ileo-caecal and caeco-colic junctions confirms their sphincteral structure. It appears that the activity of the muscular fibres, identified in the ileo-caecal and caeco-colic plica, modulates the curvature of the junctions and thus, blocks, as sphincters, the reflux of contents from the caecum into the ileum and from the colon into the caecum. But on the other hand, the pelvic flexure does not possess any microscopic organization to stop the reflux of contents from the dorsal colon into the ventral colon.

The authors report on a case of localised bipolar malignant colic amebiasis in a 34 year old man, as a complication of undiagnosed benin colic amebiasis; the initial signs consisted of left basi-thoracic symptoms for which a sub phrenic abcess secondary to rupture of two abcesses of the left lobe of the liver was responsible. The surgical intervention consisted of a right hemicolectomy without anastomosis with a double derivation by ileostomy colostomy and drainage of the abcesses. The evolution was rapidly fatal by an irreversible state of shock.

A 10-month-old boy had episodes of apparent colic with bloody diarrhea. On investigation after prolapse of a rectal mass, a pedunculated polyp was found and removed by transanal ligation. The abdominal pain had been caused by the polyp intussuscepting the sigmoid colon into the rectum. Although rectal bleeding in children under age 1 is rarely caused by rectal polyps, physicians should consider this diagnosis in children of any age when recurrent colic and blood-streaked diarrhea occur.
