Adapting and Implementing an Evidence-Based Reentry Intervention for Incarcerated Transgender Women: Lessons Learned.

Incarceration is a significant public health issue that disproportionately impacts transgender (trans) women, particularly those of color. T … ssons learned include the importance of peer facilitators, facilitated referral to gender-affirming community resources, and obtaining programmatic buy-in from jail staff and administration. Results indicate that GC is feasible and acceptable, and holds promise in improving the health of transgender women reentering the community after a period of incarceration.

Understanding American Indian Youth in Residential Recovery from Substance Use Disorder: Risk and Protective Experiences and Perceived Recovery Support.

Historical trauma has contributed to the reality that addiction disproportionately affects tribal communities, including American Indian youth. We sought to understand American Indian youths' own experiences and perceptions of the environments to which they return after completing residential treatment for substance use disorder. We recruited three cohorts of American Indian residents of a substance use disorder treatment facility (N = 40). These residents completed a survey that measured risk and protective factors, as well as actual risk behaviors, including drug use, gambling, and violence.

The power of community science to quantify ecological interactions in cities.

Studying animals in urban environments is especially challenging because much of the area is private property not easily accessible to professional scientists. In addition, collecting data on animals that are cryptic, secretive, or rare is also challenging due to the time and resources needed to amass an adequate dataset. Here, we show that community science can be a powerful tool to overcome these challenges. We used observations submitted to the community science platform iNaturalist to assess predation and parasitism across urbanization gradients in a secretive, 'hard-to-study' species, the

Determination of nasal and oropharyngeal microbiomes in a multicenter population-based study - findings from Pretest 1 of the German National Cohort.

We examined acceptability, preference and feasibility of collecting nasal and oropharyngeal swabs, followed by microbiome analysis, in a population-based study with 524 participants. Anterior nasal and oropharyngeal swabs were collected by certified personnel. In addition, participants self-collected nasal swabs at home four weeks later. Four swab types were compared regarding (1) participants' satisfaction and acceptance and (2) detection of microbial community structures based on deep sequencing of the 16 S rRNA gene V1-V2 variable regions. All swabbing methods were highly accepted. Microbia

Community participation for girls and women living with Rett syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the relationships between impairment and contextual factors and community participation for girls and women with Rett syndrome. METHODS: Data was collected from a questionnaire completed in 2009 by families participating in the Australian Rett Syndrome Database (n = 214). Univariate and multivariate logistic regression were used to analyse relationships between impairment, personal and environmental factors and community participation. RESULTS: The mean age of the girls and women was 17.6 years (SD = 7.95, range 3 to 34 years) with 114 (53.3%) girls still at school and

Violence Against Doctors by Patients and Their Relatives in Hospital Settings: A Narrative Review of Risk Factors, Communication Failures, and Prevention Strategies.

Workplace violence against doctors has become an increasingly important concern in hospital settings, particularly in emergency departments and high-volume tertiary hospitals where clinical urgency, emotional distress, overcrowding, and resource limitations commonly intersect. Patients' relatives and companions represent a particularly important group in this context because they often function as caregivers, advocates, financial decision-makers, and intermediaries between the patient and the healthcare system. Their aggressive reactions may be triggered by fear, uncertainty, poor prognosis, p

Community health workers in clinical research at the example of a phase IIIb/ IV antimalarial drug trial conducted in five African countries.

Global health, particularly in underserved settings can benefit immensely from well-trained community health workers (CHWs) supporting primary healthcare interventions. They can reduce morbidity and mortality of infectious diseases like malaria. Disease control programs can particularly benefit from a tight link between CHWs and communities and several studies have shown the benefit of the participation of non-facility-based CHWs in malaria control program activities for reducing malaria-related mortality in children. Because CHWs are often part of and trusted by served communities, they can a

Breast Cancer Multi-Disciplinary Team Meetings in a Resource-Constrained System: Are Patients Receiving the Treatment Recommended?

BACKGROUND: Globally, breast cancer is a sentinel health crisis, with 2.3 million new cases annually. In comparison with HICs, the stage of presentation in LMICs is higher, with a greater number of deaths occurring due to metastatic disease. A call for action with a global strategy for breast cancer is required, with an increasing role of the multidisciplinary team meeting (MDT). Its (the MDT's) use in resource-constrained systems is not well established. This study aimed to evaluate the outcomes of MDT decisions and determine the concordance of treatment recommendations and those received by

Jail Mental Health Resourcing: A Conceptual and Empirical Study of Social Determinants.

U.S. county jails hold large populations of mentally ill inmates but have rarely been researched quantitatively to assess their collective capacity for providing mental health treatment. This research uses ordinal logit and a partial parallel slopes model and a large sample of U.S. counties to assess conceptualized links between local institutional and structural indicators and jail mental health resourcing. Strong church networks and high rates of adult education completion are associated with enhanced jail mental health resourcing. Urbanized areas and areas with deep economic ties to manufac

Flexible unicast-based group communication for CoAP-enabled devices.

Smart embedded objects will become an important part of what is called the Internet of Things. Applications often require concurrent interactions with several of these objects and their resources. Existing solutions have several limitations in terms of reliability, flexibility and manageability of such groups of objects. To overcome these limitations we propose an intermediately level of intelligence to easily manipulate a group of resources across multiple smart objects, building upon the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). We describe the design of our solution to create and manipulate

Using Twitter and other social media platforms to provide situational awareness during an incident.

The recent use of social media by protesters in Iran, Egypt, Yemen and elsewhere has focused new attention on this communications medium. Government agencies and businesses, as well, are using social media to push information to their stakeholders. Those who are on the front lines of this information revolution, however, realise that social media is most effective when the communication is two-way. Unlike other media, social media allows information sharing. This, in turn, provides emergency managers with new situational-awareness resources when trying to mitigate an incident. As Federal Emerg

Healthcare managers' experiences of technostress and the actions they take to handle it - a critical incident analysis.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare managers, in comparison with other healthcare professionals, have an increased likelihood of experiencing technostress at work. Since knowledge about the causes and severity of technostress and about the strategies healthcare managers use to handle it is limited, the aim of this study was to describe their experience of technostress and the actions they employ to address it. METHODS: An explorative design based on the critical incident technique was used. In total, 20 healthcare managers (10 women, 10 men) from four hospitals in two county councils in Sweden were purpos

An ontology-based approach for harmonization and cross-cohort query of Alzheimer's disease data resources.

BACKGROUND: In the United States, the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center (NACC) and the Alzheimer's Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI) are two major data sharing resources for Alzheimer's Disease (AD) research. NACC and ADNI strive to make their data more FAIR (findable, interoperable, accessible and reusable) for the broader research community. However, there is limited work harmonizing and supporting cross-cohort interoperability of the two resources. METHOD: In this paper, we leverage an ontology-based approach to harmonize data elements in the two resources and develop a web-bas

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder resources for health professionals: a scoping review protocol.

INTRODUCTION: People with fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) encounter a range of health and allied health providers and require specialised support to ensure health services are provided safely and effectively. Not all health professionals possess the knowledge or expertise required for the identification, assessment, referral and management of FASD. Accessible resources for understanding and managing FASD can help create awareness in health professionals and ensure patients receive the correct diagnosis and timely access to the necessary supports and services. The aim of this scoping rev

Enhancing Immune Thrombocytopenia Education and Support: Insights From a Learning Exchange Program.

BACKGROUND: Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP) is a rare autoimmune disorder resulting in reduced platelet count. The annual incidence is 3.3 per 100,000 adults and 8.8 per 100,000 person-years in children. Immune thrombocytopenia impacts the quality of life, productivity, and psychosocial well-being of patients and caregivers. This quality improvement study aims to characterize needs of patients, caregivers, and health-care providers (HCPs) managing chronic ITP to improve management in the future. METHODS: We conducted a two-session Learning Exchange program: one with HCPs and adult patients, and

A look at state-level risk assessment in the United States: making decisions in the absence of federal risk values.

State environmental agencies in the United States are charged with making risk management decisions that protect public health and the environment while managing limited technical, financial, and human resources. Meanwhile, the federal risk assessment community that provides risk assessment guidance to state agencies is challenged by the rapid growth of the global chemical inventory. When chemical toxicity profiles are unavailable on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's Integrated Risk Information System or other federal resources, each state agency must act independently to identify and

Five dimensions of faith and spiritually of older African American women transitioning out of homelessness.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness among older African American women is emerging as a serious social problem. The increasing cost of living, diminishing community resources, and shrinking retirement benefits, as well as reduced social services are resulting in greater numbers of older minority women becoming homeless. AIMS: This investigation explores the relevance of faith and spirituality to an advocacy assessment designed to help participants resolve issues that operate as barriers to their leaving and staying out of homelessness. METHODS: A substudy of a larger research and development project wa…

A practical community-based response strategy to interrupt Ebola transmission in sierra Leone, 2014-2015.

BACKGROUND: The Ebola virus disease spread rapidly in West Africa in 2014, leading to the loss of thousands of lives. Community engagement was one of the key strategies to interrupt Ebola transmission, and practical community level measures needed to be explored in the field and tailored to the specific context of communities. METHODS: First, community-level education on Ebola virus disease (EVD) prevention was launched for the community's social mobilizers in six districts in Sierra Leone beginning in November 2014. Then, from January to May of 2015, in three pilot communities, local trained
