OBJECTIVE: To explore the diagnostic utility of normal tear osmolarity in patients with symptoms suggestive of dry eye disease (DED).
METHODS: Prospective observational cohort study of 100 patients that underwent tear osmolarity testing (TearLab™) if they endorsed one or more symptoms of potential DED. Patients were included for the study if they had a normal tear osmolarity test (value <308 mOsm/L in each eye, and an inter-eye difference <8 mOsm/L). Occupational sensitization to lactase is reported in workers formulating and packaging this consumer product, which is used for the relief of gastrointestinal symptoms caused by intolerance to lactose. Allergic rhinitis, conjunctivitis, and some cases of asthma were noted. There was suggestive evidence that atopic individuals may be at greater risk of sensitization. Lactase should be added to the list of potential occupational respiratory sensitizers.

Cromolyn sodium is a highly effective topical anti-allergenic solution for the treatment of vernal, giant papillary, ragweed, and atopic conjunctivitis. It acts by inhibiting the release of histamine and thereby prevents the inflammatory response by subacute type I hypersensitivity reactions. In a one year pilot project in Hamburg, the feasibility of a sentinel practice system was tested by paediatricians and the health officials. Vernal keratoconjunctivitis (VKC) is a recurrent, chronic allergic inflammation of the ocular surface associated with remodeling of the cornea and conjunctiva, with a potential to adversely affect the patient's vision and quality of life. It affects mainly children and young adults. The purpose of this interventional case report is to present a typical case of limbal VKC, which was unresponsive to antiallergic treatment alone. A 5-year-old boy, who was previously unsuccessful with conventional anti-allergic therapy alone, presented with clinicopathological features pathognomonic of limbal VKC.

In a 37-year-old worker employed in a coffee roastery who suffered from work-related rhinoconjunctivitis, allergologic investigations demonstrated sensitization to the dust of the green, unroasted coffee bean.
