House modifications for preventing malaria.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains an important public health problem. Research in 1900 suggested house modifications may reduce malaria transmission. A previous version of this review concluded that house screening may be effective in reducing malaria. This update includes data from five new studies. OBJECTIVES: To assess the effects of house modifications that aim to reduce exposure to mosquitoes on malaria disease and transmission. SEARCH METHODS: We searched the Cochrane Infectious Diseases Group Specialized Register; Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), published in the Cochrane Li

Not all lasers are the same: a scoping review evaluating laser therapy for vulvodynia.

INTRODUCTION: Lasers are commonly used for treating various vaginal/vulvar conditions. To date, there is to our knowledge no available literature review on the effects of different types of lasers for the treatment of women with vulvodynia, a condition that causes chronic pain in the vulvar area. OBJECTIVES: We sought to review the literature and summarize the existing published evidence regarding the effects of lasers for the treatment of women with vulvodynia. METHODS: A scoping review with a systematic search was conducted that included studies investigating the use of laser treatment in

External cephalic version for breech presentation before term.

BACKGROUND: External cephalic version (ECV) of the breech fetus at term (after 37 weeks) has been shown to be effective in reducing the number of breech presentations and caesarean sections, but the rates of success are relatively low. This review examines studies initiating ECV prior to term (before 37 weeks' gestation). OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of a policy of beginning ECV before term (before 37 weeks' gestation) for breech presentation on fetal presentation at birth, method of delivery, and the rate of preterm birth, perinatal morbidity, stillbirth or neonatal mortality. Effect of triclosan-coated sutures for abdominal wound closure on the incidence of abdominal wound dehiscence: a protocol for an individual participant data meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Acute abdominal wound dehiscence (AWD) or burst abdomen is a severe complication after abdominal surgery with an incidence up to 3.8%. Surgical site infection (SSI) is the biggest risk factor for the development of AWD. It is strongly suggested that the use of triclosan-coated sutures (TCS) for wound closure reduces the risk of SSI. We hypothesise that the use of TCS for abdominal wound closure may reduce the risk of AWD. Current randomised controlled trials (RCTs) lack power to investigate this. Therefore, the purpose of this individual participant data meta-analysis is to evalu

Low-dose systemic bupivacaine prevents the development of allodynia after thoracotomy in rats.

BACKGROUND: Chronic pain after thoracotomy has been recently reproduced in a rat model that allows investigation of the effect of drugs that might reduce the incidence of allodynia after thoracotomy. Previous studies suggest that intrathecal or systemic morphine, clonidine, neostigmine, and gabapentin reduce the incidence of allodynia in the rat postthoracotomy pain model. Our purpose was to test whether intercostal and systemic injection of bupivacaine prevented the development of allodynia in an animal model of chronic intercostal neuropathic pain. METHODS: Male Sprague-Dawley rats were ane

The effects of mandibular advancement devices on pediatric obstructive sleep apnea: An umbrella review.

This umbrella review evaluated the effects of mandibular advancement devices (MADs) on pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (PedOSA). We searched six databases for systematic reviews published up to June 2025, that included children with polysomnography (PSG)-diagnosed OSA managed with MADs. The primary outcome was the change in the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI). Secondary outcomes included oxygen saturation and skeletal/dental changes. Twelve systematic reviews, including 7 meta-analyses, were included. Management with MADs resulted in a reduction in AHI and a slight improvement in sagittal mandibu

Pyoderma Gangrenosum and Inflammatory Bowel Disease: Recent Insights into Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, and Therapeutic Approaches.

Pyoderma gangrenosum (PG) is a rare neutrophilic dermatosis strongly associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). This narrative review summarizes current knowledge on the epidemiology, clinical features, proposed mechanisms, and treatment of PG in patients with IBD. In addition to population-based, large cohort, and mechanistic studies, we reviewed 115 published case reports and case series describing patients with PG and IBD and synthesized demographic, clinical, and therapeutic trends. Most patients developed PG after an IBD diagnosis, with smaller proportions presenting simultaneously

Health-related Quality of Life of Patients with Rosacea: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis of Real-world Data.

Patients with rosacea commonly experience stigmatization, which induces stress and thereby exacerbates their symptoms. Given the strong effects of rosacea on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), addressing the physical and psychosocial aspects of rosacea is essential. To examine the effects of rosacea on HRQoL, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis involving real-world data. PubMed, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Library were searched, and randomized controlled trials (RCTs), cross-sectional studies, and case series evaluating the HRQoL of patients with rosacea were included. HRQoL a

Is the Use of Antimicrobial Photodynamic Therapy or Systemic Antibiotics More Effective in Improving Periodontal Health When Used in Conjunction with Localised Non-Surgical Periodontal Therapy? A Systematic Review.

Periodontal disease can be treated in several ways. This paper reviewed whether antimicrobial photodynamic therapy (aPDT) in addition to scaling and root planing (SRP) produces improved clinical results over systemic antibiotics (ABs) in conjunction with SRP in adults with periodontitis. Studies were searched using the following electronic databases: MEDLINE, the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews, and the Web of Science Core Collection up to and including November 2018. Four randomized controlled trials (RCTs) were reviewed to maximise the reliability of the evidence. All participants su

[Diphosphonates in the treatment of osteoporosis].

The efficacy of diphosphonates in the treatment of diseases with increased osteoclastic bone resorption has been clearly demonstrated. Recent results show that these substances are also effective in the treatment of osteoporosis. Intermittent application of the first generation bisphosphonate, etidronate, up to three years is free of risk, stabilizes trabecular bone density after two years and seems to decrease the progression of deformations of the vertebral column in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis and vertebral fractures. In order to prove this benefit clearly, further studies of lon

Comorbid diseases in bullous pemphigoid: A population-based case-control study.

Bullous pemphigoid (BP) is the most prevalent autoimmune blistering disorder, triggered by autoantibodies targeting hemidesmosome components. It is associated with substantial morbidity and increased mortality. No studies comprehensively evaluate all comorbidities before and after diagnosing patients with BP. We aimed to investigate all BP-associated comorbid diseases and their patterns of associations. This nationwide population-based study included 5066 patients with BP and 10 132 controls between 2011 and 2021. We performed an automated mass screening of 546 diagnostic codes to identify BP-

Comparison of the active cycle breathing technique with other self-administered breathing techniques for the management of mucociliary production in cystic fibrosis: A systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Cystic fibrosis (CF) is characterized by excessive airway mucus, recurrent infections, impaired ventilation, and progressive decline in lung function. Airway clearance techniques are central to management. Among them is the active cycle of breathing technique (ACBT), which incorporates breathing control, thoracic expansion exercises, and the forced expiratory technique (FET). Comparative evaluation with other self-administered exercises is needed to identify the most effective approach for clinical use. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effects of ACBT compared with other self-administe

Recruiting participants to walking intervention studies: a systematic review.

PURPOSE: Most researchers who are conducting physical activity trials face difficulties in recruiting participants who are representative of the population or from specific population groups. Participants who are often the hardest to recruit are often those who stand to benefit most (the least active, from ethnic and other minority groups, from neighbourhoods with high levels of deprivation, or have poor health). The aim of our study was to conduct a systematic review of published literature of walking interventions, in order to identify the impact, characteristics, and differential effects of

Signals of Venous Thromboembolism Risk from Drug-Drug Interactions Involving Benzodiazepines and Other Sedative Hypnotics: Self-Controlled Case Series Analyses.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Benzodiazepines and sedative hypnotics such as zolpidem ("z-drugs") are commonly prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders. Epidemiologic evidence links their use to increased risk of venous thromboembolism. We investigated venous thromboembolism risk among concomitant users of individual benzodiazepines/z-drugs (examined separately) with other prescription medications to generate data-driven hypotheses about drug interactions resulting in clinically meaningful harm to inform future etiologic studies of specific drug combinations. METHODS: We conducted a series of s
