OBJECTIVE: Black adolescents differ from adolescents of other racial/ethnic groups in prevalence, patterns, risk and protective factors, and consequences of substance use, underscoring the need for culturally tailored interventions. Black adolescents also experience unique barriers in access to interventions that may be amenable to digital interventions. However, based on available literature, no systematic review has examined the efficacy of culturally tailored digital interventions for substance use prevention among Black adolescents. Here, existing culturally tailored digital interventions

A new form of substance abuse in adolescents is the inhalation of fumes from typewriter correction fluids (Liquid Paper, Wite-Out, Snopake, etc), which are composed of various chlorinated solvents, to induce euphoria. Medical complications of such abuse and medical management of acute toxic episodes are discussed herein, along with suggestions for controlling this substance abuse.

This study tested whether early and developmentally atypical substance use mediates risk for adult substance use among children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), and whether that risk is substance-specific. Participants were children with ADHD previously enrolled in a randomized controlled trial (RCT), and a demographically similar non-ADHD group, assessed at 2 through 16 years after the original RCT baseline. Self-reports of heavy drinking, marijuana use, daily smoking, and other illicit drug use were collected at follow-ups to establish atypically early and frequent use.

BACKGROUND: Behavioral addictions like pathological gambling share many clinical characteristics with substance dependence. In addition, both types of disorders are associated with impairments in inhibitory control. Studies in patients with substance use disorders point to hyporesponsiveness of the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex. However, no such data exist on behavioral addictions.
METHODS: Using functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the neural circuitry associated with impaired response inhibition in a group of male problem gamblers (n=17) using a stop signal task. We includ

Childhood self-control has been linked with better health, criminal justice, and economic outcomes in adulthood in predominately white cohorts outside of the United States. We investigated whether self-control in first grade predicted success in the transition to adulthood in a longitudinal cohort of first graders who participated in a universal intervention trial to prevent poor achievement and reduce aggression in Baltimore schools. We also explored whether the intervention moderated the relationship between self-control and young adult outcomes. Teachers rated self-control using the Teacher

IMPORTANCE: Disrupted reward processing, mainly driven by striatal dysfunction, is a key characteristic of addictive behaviors. However, functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) studies have reported conflicting results, with both hypoactivations and hyperactivations during anticipation and outcome notification of monetary rewards in addiction.
OBJECTIVE: To determine the nature and direction of reward-processing disruptions during anticipation and outcome notification of monetary rewards in individuals with addiction using image-based meta-analyses of fMRI studies.

Immunoreactive substance P was investigated in turtle lumbar spinal cord after sciatic nerve transection. In control animals immunoreactive fibers were densest in synaptic field Ia, where the longest axons invaded synaptic field III. Positive neuronal bodies were identified in the lateral column of the dorsal horn and substance P immunoreactive varicosities were observed in the ventral horn, in close relationship with presumed motoneurons. Other varicosities appeared in the lateral and anterior funiculi. After axotomy, substance P immunoreactive fibers were reduced slightly on the side of the

BACKGROUND: Girls have unique developmental pathways to substance use and justice system involvement, warranting gender-responsive intervention. We tested the efficacy of VOICES (a 12-session, weekly trauma-informed, gender-responsive substance use intervention) in reducing substance use and HIV/STI risk behaviors among justice- and school-referred girls.
METHODS: Participants were 113 girls (Mage = 15.7 years, SD = 1.4; 12 % White, 19 % Black, 15 % multi-racial; 42 % Latinx) with a history of substance use referred from juvenile justice (29 %) and school systems (71 %). Study assessments wer

BACKGROUND: The relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration and substance use is not well understood. We conducted a meta-ethnography of qualitative studies to explore how substance use features in survivors' and perpetrators' accounts of IPV perpetration.
METHODS: Qualitative studies from 1995 to 2016 were identified from PsycINFO, ASSIA and Web of Science, with an update in PsycINFO and ASSIA to December 2017. 7654 abstracts were screened for accounts of heterosexual IPV perpetration, then full-texts were screened for mentions of substance use. Key concepts from 26 qua

1. In vitro studies were performed to examine the mechanisms underlying substance P-induced enhancement of constriction rate in guinea-pig mesenteric lymphatic vessels. 2. Substance P caused an endothelium-dependent increase in lymphatic constriction frequency which was first significant at a concentration of 1 nM (115 +/- 3% of control, n = 11) with 1 microM, the highest concentration tested, increasing the rate to 153 +/- 4% of control (n = 9). 3. Repetitive 5 min applications of substance P (1 microM) caused tachyphylaxis with tissue responsiveness tending to decrease (by an average of 23%)

This is a descriptive study of the recruitment and clinical/environmental characteristics of a child cohort (ages 10-12) established to test transmission of impulsivity in children with (FH+; n = 305) and without (FH-; n = 81) family history of substance use disorder. Among this cohort FH+ children had more emotional and behavioral symptoms, worse family relationships, and more deviant peers compared to FH- children. This cohort of children was established prior to the initiation of regular substance use and significant clinical problems, which will allow the opportunity to examine reciprocal

BACKGROUND: The neuropeptides calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) and substance P are important mediators of neurogenic inflammation when they are released from activated primary nociceptive afferents. It is long evident that neuropeptides play an important role in migraine pathophysiology, but the significance of neurogenic inflammation is still debated.
METHODS: In an approved hemisected rodent head preparation, we measured CGRP release from the cranial dura mater in parallel with substance P release using animals pre-treated with anti-CGRP antibodies or control solutions.
RESULTS: Apar

BACKGROUND: Adolescent use of substances and injury experiences such as head injury have become increasingly prevalent. However, information regarding their association and the potential pathways linking them remains limited. This study examined the association between substance use and injuries, emphasizing the mediating role of interpersonal violence among adolescents.
METHODS: We employed a multi-country analysis of Global School-based Health Surveys of 122,945 in-school adolescents aged 11-18 from 29 countries. This study was a cross-sectional school-based, nationally representative study

Flualprazolam is a nonregistered drug in the benzodiazepine family and constitutes a new psychoactive substance (NPS). Since 2014, a growing number of designer benzodiazepines have become available over the Internet and on the counterfeit drug market. In June 2019, a cluster of patients intoxicated with flualprazolam was identified by the Oregon Poison Center. As an emerging drug of abuse, the clinical characteristics of flualprazolam have been poorly characterized thus far. Over a one-week period, 6 teenagers presented to local emergency departments after ingesting illegally obtained counterf
