Colposcopy is the accepted diagnostic test for evaluation of an abnormal Pap test to determine the location and extent of cervical intraepithelial lesions (CIN). Loop electrocautery excision procedure (LEEP) is the preferred procedure for advanced diagnosis and treatment of CIN following colposcopy. Although LEEP is the preferred treatment of CIN, cryotherapy is an option for treatment in some settings due to it's ease of performance, minimal complications, and cost-effectiveness. This article focuses on the proper technique and use of these procedures to evaluate and treat cervical abnormalit

We describe our experience using an iodinated contrast solution to hydrodissect adjacent structures before percutaneous renal cryoablation. Hydrodissection was performed before cryoablation with placement of a 20-gauge, 15-cm introducer needle into the retroperitoneum under CT or ultrasonographic guidance followed by infusion of 5% dextrose in water and 2% iodinated contrast between the kidney and the adjacent organ. Ten patients underwent hydrodissection with an iodinated contrast solution at our institution. The mean tumor size was 3.1 ± 1.2 cm. The organs displaced included colon (n=7), sma

Ureteral injury is a well-known complication of radiofrequency ablation of renal tumors. Ureteral injury with cryoablation seems to be less common, but has been reported. Herein, the authors describe a technique that can be used to avoid direct ureteral injury during cryoablation of renal masses. Initial ice ball formation serves to fix the probe in the target. The mass and kidney can then be retracted away from the ureter to avoid direct involvement with the subsequent ice ball. The authors report three successful example cases, with no significant complications.

OBJECTIVES: To determine the feasibility and safety of performing percutaneous cryoablation of angiomyolipomas (AMLs) in patients with solitary kidneys.
METHODS: Three patients with AMLs involving a solitary kidney underwent computed tomography-guided percutaneous cryoablation. All lesions were located in the lateral/posterior part of the kidney, allowing for safe access from the skin for cryoprobe insertion. Intravenous sedation and local anesthesia were used for each patient. Follow-up computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging and physical examination, urinalysis, and serum blood ur

Electrical isolation of the pulmonary veins and disconnection of the left atrial musculature from their arrhythmogenic effects is the cornerstone of definitive and curative treatment in patients with symptomatic recurrent paroxysmal atrial fibrillation that is refractory to antiarrhythmic therapy. The type of lesion produced by balloon cryoablation is such that the tissue architecture is preserved and thrombus formation and the risk of pulmonary vein stenosis are reduced. We report on immediate outcomes in the first five patients who underwent treatment. These cases represent initial experienc

PURPOSE: To report a case of lymphangiectasia successfully treated with liquid nitrogen cryotherapy.
METHODS: A 1.5-mm Brymill cryoprobe (Brymill Cryogenic Systems, Ellington, CT) was applied in a double freeze-thaw method after an incisional biopsy of a portion of the conjunctiva. Freeze times were 1-2 seconds with thawing of 5-10 seconds between freezes.
RESULTS: A 64-year-old white man had symptoms of bilateral epiphora, eye irritation, and episodic blurred vision that was worse in the right eye. Ocular examination revealed inferior chemotic conjunctiva in the right eye and redundant conj

BACKGROUND: Animal studies and clinical observations have demonstrated that radiofrequency current application at growing myocardium may result in coronary artery obstruction. Recently, cryoenergy has emerged as an effective alternative to radiofrequency ablation of arrhythmogenic substrates in pediatric patients. Up to now, there has been a lack of experimental data concerning the effects of cryoenergy application at growing myocardium.
METHODS: During general anesthesia, selective coronary angiography of the right and left coronary artery was performed in 10 piglets (age: 6 weeks, body weig

PURPOSE: To determine the feasibility of bladder cryoablation (BC) applied laparoscopically, percutaneously, and transurethrally in a porcine survival study. The expected and observed area of cell death after BC was also examined.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nine pigs were divided equally into the three treatment groups. Cryoablation was performed with two freeze-thaw cycles after the bladder had been insufflated with CO2. Each animal was observed for 7 days after the procedure for treatment-related complications. After cystectomy, each specimen was examined pathologically to determine the degree

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD) is a major cause of ventricular tachycardia and cardiac arrest in young adults. The ideal management of this genetic disorder is individual. The treatment options are antiarrhythmic drug therapy, transcatheter radiofrequency catheter ablation, implantable cardioverter defibrillator therapy, and surgical treatment [Kies P, Bootsma M, Bax J, Schalij MJ, van der Wall EE. A 61-year-old male was treated with cryoablation for typical atrial flutter. Cryoablation was performed percutaneously with an 8-mm tip catheter to achieve a bidirectional conduction block of the cavo-tricuspid isthmus. When freezing at the point where bidirectional isthmus block occurred, the patient experienced chest pain and ECG showed ST segment elevations corresponding to the right coronary artery. Cryoablation may be painless per se, but patients should be told to report chest discomfort and surface ECG must be followed carefully during ablation.

Cryo- and laser therapy of stage 3 have reduced, but not eliminated the occurrence of retinal detachment in stages 4a, 4b and 5 of ROP. In this disease the treatment of these stages is still the greatest challenge to the ophthalmologist. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to present our up-to-date possibilities of treatment of different kinds of retinal detachments in ROP, including segmental scleral buckling, encircling scleral buckling, scleral resection, vitrectomy and its modifications in ROP. Guidelines of surgery of retinal detachment in active stage 4 and 5 of retinopathy of prematurit

We report on 3 cases of stone formation in the prostatic urethra after cryosurgical ablation of the prostate. This complication occurred late in the course, many months after the normal postoperative healing process apparently was finished and patients enjoyed normal voiding. Transrectal ultrasound proved to be useful in making the diagnosis. Treatment included lithotripsy and cold resection of residual dead tissue.

The author summarizes the present knowledge concerning the treatment of pain in neovascular glaucoma. The treatment of the pain is very closely connected with a good compensation of the intraocular pressure. The author did not find a correlation between the degree of the elevated intraocular pressure and the ocular pain. He compares the results of the treatment of ocular pain in neovascular glaucoma with cyclo-cryocoagulation as a single method with those of the method of trans-scleral panretinal cryocoagulation in combination with cyclo-cryocoagulation performed in one session. We reviewed the frequency of respiratory complications associated with cryotherapy in 14 premature infants who underwent 17 cryotherapy procedures. Five of the procedures were performed on infants already being mechanically ventilated. Two of these infants required increased ventilatory support during and following the procedure for decreased spontaneous respirations. For the 12 procedures performed on 11 infants who were not being mechanically ventilated at the time of cryotherapy, four infants had no complications, three infants had minor respiratory deteriorations, and five infants required

Common, plantar and flat warts are the primary classes of nongenital warts. Although spontaneous remission does occur, all warts should be treated to avoid spreading. Common warts often develop in the periungual region of the fingers. This type of wart generally can be removed with cryotherapy, topical application of salicylic acid or occlusive taping. Plantar warts are found over pressure points of the heel or metatarsal heads. They are also treated with cryotherapy or salicylic acid. Flat warts are commonly seen on the dorsum of the hands or on the face. These warts are best treated with top
