Cases of tuberculosis/cryptococcosis co-infection are rapidly increasing in China. However, most studies addressing this co-infection have been published in Chinese journals, and this publication strategy has obscured this disease trend for scientists in other parts of the world. Our investigation found that 62.9% of all co-infection cases worldwide were reported in the Chinese population (n=197) between 1965 and 2016, and 56.3% of these Chinese cases were reported after 2010. We report a kidney transplant recipient with severe skin- and soft-tissue infection mimicking necrotising fasciitis. Patient failed to respond to empirical antibiotic therapy for presumed bacterial cellulitis. Culture of aspirate from the wound and tissue samples revealed Cryptococcus neoformans. In recent years the effect of HAART in patients with AIDS has been great at decreasing the incidence of opportunistic infections. Nonetheless, patients with AIDS living in developing countries still present with severe central nervous system cryptococcosis, with high mortality rates. The study of the clinical-epidemiological-laboratory aspects of the patients treated before the HAART era might be useful in an assessment of the impact of these drugs in the prognosis of cases.
