Rupture of simple (extraneural) cysts such as popliteal cysts (Baker's cysts) is a well-known occurrence. The purpose of this report is to introduce the similar occurrence of extraneural rupture of peroneal and tibial intraneural cysts in the knee region, describe the associated magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings, and identify risk factors. There was MRI evidence of rupture in 20 of 38 intraneural cases reviewed, mainly in the region of the fibular head and popliteal fossa. Ruptured intraneural cysts and simple cysts share these MRI findings: T2 hyperintense fluid within surrounding int

BACKGROUND: Clinical diagnosis and follow up of cystic echinococcosis (CE) are based on imaging complemented by serology. Several immunodiagnostic tests are commercially available, but the development of new tools is still needed to overcome the lack of standardization of the target antigen, generally consisting of a crude extract of Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cyst fluid. In a previous work, we described a chromatographic method for the preparation of a highly enriched Antigen 5 fraction from hydatid cyst fluid. The high reactivity of patient sera against this preparation prompted us to e…

The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and evaluate the clinical effects of transnasal marsupialization of maxillary cyst under nasal endoscope. Twenty patients with maxillary bone cysts were treated with endoscopic marsupialization. According to the location of the maxillary bone cyst, the opening window was selected in the nasal base or the inferior or middle nasal meatus. The cyst wall of the window was removed, and the fluid was drained out. The diameter of the opening window was more than 1 cm, so that the cyst and the maxillary sinus can be fused into a cavity. This ens

Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is the most common monogenetic inherited kidney disease characterized by renal progressive fluid-filled cysts and interstitial fibrosis. Inhibiting renal cyst development and interstitial fibrosis has been proven effective in delaying the progression of ADPKD. The purpose of this study was to discover effective drugs from natural products for preventing and treating ADPKD. Candidate compounds were screened from a natural product library by virtual screening. The Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cyst model, embryonic kidney cyst model, and or

We experienced a case with a synovial cyst accompanied by asymptomatic lumbar vertebral fracture that required differentiation from spinal metastasis. An 82-year-old man suffered from right leg and anal pain. Computed tomography (CT) showed L5 spondylolysis. Magnetic resonance images (MRI) revealed an intra spinal cyst and acute lumbar vertebral fracture of L5 vertebral body. The surrounding area of the cyst presented contrast enhancement, and the extradural mass compressed the dural sac. Bone scintigraphy with 99m technetium-MDP demonstrated intense uptake on the right first, fourth, fifth, a

Historically meniscal cysts have been treated with either an open total menisectomy, isolated cyst excision, or a combination of the two procedures. The advent of arthroscopic techniques has led to innovative treatment options for meniscal cyst management. A review of meniscal cysts and the results of arthroscopic treatment form the basis of this study. From 1986 to 1991, 18 patients with meniscal cysts were treated by arthroscopic cyst decompression. Thirteen men and five women comprised the study group and had an average age of 28 years. The follow-up period ranged from 6 to 60 months (avera

In the years since identification of autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) genes, the lag time between initial understanding and translation to therapy has decreased rapidly. Albaqumi and colleagues describe a promising approach to slow ADPKD cyst enlargement through inhibition of the basolateral KCa3.1 K(+) channel, using a nontoxic small molecule with a close congener poised for rapid entry into the clinic. Cyst fluid accumulation can be blocked from both sides now.

The case of a 8 month-old infant presenting with biliary peritonitis, mild icterus and slowly progressive ascites is reported. Diagnosis was made through paracentesis showing higher bilirubin levels in the ascitic fluid (18 mg/100 ml) than in serum, and abdominal ultrasonography which showed pictures suggestive of choledochal cyst. A perforated choledochal cyst was surgically removed. The biliary duct was reconstructed by means of a hepatic Roux-en-Y jejunostomy. Postoperative course was satisfactory.

CONCLUSION: This is the first report of a duodenal duplication cyst having elevated intra-cyst fluid levels of amylase, carbohydrate antigen CA 19-9 and carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA). Although rare, this is an important differential diagnosis in the management of cystic tumours of the pancreas.

OBJECTIVE: We describe herein a surgical technique, whereby we use a liposuction device for the laparoscopic treatment of hepatic hydatid cysts (HHC).
METHODS: Ten patients with 12 hepatic hydatid cysts were treated with this technique. All patients received pre- and postoperative antiscolecidal medications. The laparoscopic technique consisted of partial aspiration of the cyst fluid and replacement of the aspirated fluid with 10% Betadine. The Betadine solution was left in situ for 10 minutes. Evacuation of the cyst contents was carried out with the liposuction device. The residual cavity wa…

Intracranial arachnoid cysts are extra-axial non-enhancing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) density lesions. These are usually incidental findings on radiological investigations. Usually, the patients with arachnoid cysts are asymptomatic until the cyst grows large while symptomatic patients present with headaches, seizures, and focal neurological deficits. The adjacent calvarial bone may show remodeling and scalloping. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) stands superior in soft-tissue contrast and multiplanar imaging in excluding other lesions from the arachnoid cyst. Arachnoid cysts follow CSF signals

The surgical procedures for unicameral solitary calcaneal bone cysts have ranged from simple curettage and grafting to subperiosteal resection with internal fixation and grafting. In this article, an endoscopically assisted technique is proposed for the curettage of a simple calcaneal cyst that takes advantage of direct visualization of the cyst wall and contents and permits accurate assessment of the extent of the lesion. After curettage, percutaneous filling of the defect with corticocancellous allograft makes the technique a complete, minimally invasive surgical approach for this condition.

BACKGROUND: Fistulation in benign cystic teratomas has not been commonly reported in the literature. We present a case of a benign ovarian dermoid cyst complicated with a recto-ovarian fistula.
CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old nonpregnant woman admitted to the gynecological outpatient clinic because of lower abdominal pain and purulent diarrhea. Gynecological examination and ultrasonography revealed a 10-cm heterogeneous cystic mass in the left ovary. Abdominopelvic CT scan revealed a left ovarian mass (10 x 9 cm) thought to be a dermoid cyst, which was seen to penetrate the proximal part of the re

A large cystic mass was found in the subdiaphragmatic region of a 46-year-old woman who had complained of continuous pain in the left flank . The cyst was located in the retroperitoneum just below the diaphragm and was adhered to the diaphragmatic skeletal muscle and abdominal aorta, but was separate from the spleen, pancreas, left adrenal gland and left kidney. The surgically resected cyst measured 8 x 8 x 7 cm and was filled with protein-rich fluid, which contained amylase and embryonal proteins such as carcinoembryonic antigen, CA125 and CA19-9. Histologically, the cyst wall was composed of

We present a case of a 48-year-old woman who began experiencing excruciating lower back pain that radiated down her right leg and got worse in 15 days. An intradural cyst at L2, which compressed the conus medullaris and cauda equina, was found to be T2 hyperintense and T1 isointense on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Upon histological inspection, a well-defined ovoid cyst was observed and identified as a neuroenteric (NE) cyst, which was somewhat brighter than cerebrospinal fluid (CSF). Cyst excision and L2 laminectomy provided her with significant pain relief and a smooth recovery. She had

A case of mediastinal bronchial cyst misdiagnosed as schwannoma is reported. The patient had no chest pain, dyspnea, cough, sputum and hemoptysis in the past. Chest enhanced CT showed mediastinal mass with clear boundary. The larger cross-section was about 3.9 cm × 3.4 cm, and there was no obvious enhancement. The primary diagnosis was considered as schwannoma, tracheal cyst or esophagus cyst. The mediastinal tumor was resected via cervical approach under general anesthesia. During the operation, it was found that the mass was located in the middle and upper mediastinum, with diameter of about
