Epilogue: Chinese Literacy From a Deaf Lens.

To promote dialogue among literacy researchers from East and West along the "'Silk Road' to literacy" for Chinese d/Deaf and hard of hearing (d/Dhh) students (Andrews et al., 2021), this epilogue to an American Annals of the Deaf special issue on language development and literacy learning of d/Dhh students in Chinese communities poses questions and provides reflections from the perspective of the Chinese Deaf lens on the ideas in the six articles that make up the special issue. This perspective reframes literacy instruction toward an asset-based model that emphasizes visual sensory strengths,

Evaluation of a specialist cognitive clinic for the Deaf community.

There are significant health inequalities between Deaf and hearing people, including barriers to accessing care and communication difficulties in consultations. Such problems have particularly affected Deaf people with acquired cognitive deficits, leading to late and missed diagnoses. We therefore established a specialist cognitive clinic for the Deaf community in 2011 at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery, which to our knowledge is the first of its kind in the world. In this study, we retrospectively analysed electronic patient records to evaluate the service and its impact

Isolated deafness as a presenting symptom in granulomatosis with polyangiitis.

Granulomatosis with polyangiitis (GPA) is a rare small vessel vasculitis commonly affecting the lungs, upper respiratory tract and kidneys. It is an idiopathic condition but likely due to an autoimmune process, resulting in granulomatous lesions and glomerulonephritis. Upper respiratory tract involvement is commonly seen in patients with GPA. Our case is that of an elderly lady (Mrs C) presenting with sudden onset bilateral deafness. She was later found to have extensive lower respiratory tract involvement although she was never particularly symptomatic of this. The presentation suggested a si…

Lies and Irony Understanding in Deaf and Hearing Adolescents.

Lies and irony are paradigmatic examples of nonliteral communication; many deaf children and even adults have difficulty in understanding them. The present study assessed the understanding of lies and irony in 96 adolescents living in Spain in urban settings (58 deaf participants, 38 hearing participants; 10-19 years old). We investigated whether deaf and hearing participants differ in their performance, and the effects of age, theory of mind (ToM), and language on the understanding of these nonliteral meanings in deaf participants. The results show that deaf participants do not find it diffic

A review of mentoring deaf and hard-of-hearing scholars.

Diversification of the scientific workforce usually focuses on recruitment and retention of women and underrepresented racial and ethnic min … fied workforce necessitates: (a) educating hearing persons in cross-cultural dynamics pertaining to deafness, sign language, and Deaf culture; (b) ensuring access to formal and incidental information to support development of professional soft skills; and (c) understanding that institutional infrastructure change may be necessary to ensure success. Early Pragmatics in Deaf and Hard of Hearing Infants.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: A set of important pragmatic skills emerge during infancy and pave the way for later language learning. It is thought these early social communication skills develop through infant-caregiver interaction. In a microanalysis, we tested whether deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) infants (typically at high risk of reduced access to rich communicative interaction in infancy) are less likely to engage in gestural and vocal pragmatic behaviors. METHODS: We coded the naturalistic communication of 8 DHH infants who had no additional needs, who were not preterm or low birth weigh

The role of post-translational modifications in hearing and deafness.

Post-translational modifications (PTMs) are key molecular events that modify proteins after their synthesis and modulate their ultimate func … erations in protein PTMs have been implicated in the pathogenesis of many human diseases, including deafness. In this review, we summarize the recent progress made in understanding the roles of PTMs during cochlear development, with particular emphasis on the enzymes driving protein phosphorylation, acetylation, methylation, glycosylation, ubiquitination a …

[When Marie Bonaparte turned a deaf ear].

Between 1927 and 1931 Marie Bonaparte had herself operated upon her clitoris three times. She did so against Freud's advice with whom she was in analysis. Among psychoanalysts these operations are still often regarded as "errors" or aberrations. But for Marie Bonaparte, who was in various ways familiar with physics and a somatic approach, surgery was the first choice, psychoanalysis only a possible alternative. She was not impressed by the scepticism of her colleagues, and adhered even more emphatically to her own strategy.

Association of the long QT syndrome With goiter and deafness.

We report on the long QT syndrome occurring in conjunction with nontoxic multinodular goiter and sensorineural deafness in several siblings of a large family. Autosomal and X-linked recessive and dominant modes of inheritance are possible for the different phenotypes. The affected family members had various phenotype combinations, suggesting variable expressivity and incomplete penetrance.

The correlational findings support the view that it is not deafness per se that contributes to psychiatric problems.

Ataxia and deafness in a young male: an unusual aetiology.

We report here a case of 18 year old male with tremors of hands, deafness, tendency to fall while walking, drowsiness and double vision of total duration 1(1/2) years. He had internuclear ophthalmoplegia, broken saccades, hypertonia and hyperreflexia of all four limbs, intention tremors, signs of gait and limb ataxia. Pupillary reactions and fundus examination were normal and signs of meningeal irritation or sensory neurological deficit were absent. MRI head and cervical spine with gadolinium enhancement revealed demyelination as evident from multiple oblong foci isointense on T1-weighted imag…

Ear examination findings at the Yeditepe School for the Deaf.

OBJECTIVE: To find out the prevalence and etiologies of middle ear disease among deaf children in a school for the deaf. METHODS: A total of 162 students with hearing impairment attending a school for the deaf during the school year of 2001-2002 were admitted to this study. The range of age was from 6 to 20 years. The examination consisted of inspection of the auricle and external auditory canal, and otoscopic, audiometric and tympanometric evaluation. School performance was assessed using the results of end-of-year school examination and continuous assessments obtained from the school admini

Sign language tics in a prelingually deaf man.

Gilles de la Tourette syndrome is characterized by vocal and motor tics starting in childhood. Vocal tics may be either noises or words, and the vocal language tics may consist of obscenities (coprolalia) and repetitions of speech that has been heard (echolalia). We describe a prelingually deaf man who has the full array of tics seen in Gilles de la Tourette syndrome, but in whom vocal language tics are replaced by equivalent sign language tics. This is, to our knowledge, the first report of sign language tics in a person with prelingual deafness. The implications of this phenomenon for the se…

Stereotyped behaviors in deaf and hard of hearing children.

Stereotyped behaviors frequently cause anxiety to parents and educators, and behaviors that appear stereotyped may prompt negative reactions. There has been little research on whether deaf or hard of hearing children display such behaviors. This study surveyed 390 students aged 3-24 years attending 3 residential schools for the deaf and hard of hearing in the United Kingdom. At least 1 additional disability was reported in 79% of the students. The main findings were that: deaf and hard of hearing children without additional disabilities did not show apparently stereotyped behaviors; approximat

Screening for neonatal and infant deafness in Europe in 1992.

Many methods of screening for hearing impairment are available. The aim of our study was to determine which ones were really used in 1992. At the request of the British Audiology Society, we conducted an inquiry into the organization of screening for deafness in neonates and infants in Europe. In practice all 6-9 month-old infants are tested with behavioural tests in every country. For the neonates, generally only those at risk for hearing-impairment (about 5%) were tested. The most widely used tests were behavioural ones. Only specialized centers used transient evoked otoacoustic emissions (T…
