INTRODUCTION: Hairdressers are exposed to wet work and manifold allergens at work, rendering exposure complex and the aetiology of occupational hand eczema (OHE) often multifactorial in this occupational group.
OBJECTIVES: To identify exposure patterns associated with increased risk of hand eczema in hairdressers.
METHODS: All hairdressers graduating from 2004 to 2007 and 2015 to 2018 received a questionnaire in 2009 and 2020, respectively. Current exposures (with or without regular glove use) and OHE were self-reported, and their association examined. Patterns of exposure were identified by

BACKGROUND: In 2012, Danish authorities submitted a proposal to the European Chemical Agency restricting the content of hexavalent chromium to a maximum of 3 ppm in leather goods. Following its adoption, this proposal was implemented in 2015 as a directive in the EU.
OBJECTIVES: To examine the temporal trend of chromium contact allergy in adult dermatitis patients patch tested between 2002 and 2017, and to determine clinical characteristics and causative exposures in these patients.
METHODS: All adult dermatitis patients patch tested between 2002 and 2017 were included. Patch test data were

Listening and paying attention to our patients is crucial for understanding a disease. A good example is Immediate Contact Skin Reactions (ICSR) which manifest as Contact Urticaria Syndrome (CUS), Contact Urticaria (CU) and Protein Contact Dermatitis (PCD). These entities are characterized by the immediate skin development of itchy flares, wheals, and/or dermatitis. All conditions usually appear within minutes of contact with various substances, including chemicals, animal products, antibiotics, cosmetics, and many other materials. From the clinical and diagnostic viewpoint, the patient's clin

The association between socio-economic status (SES) and respiratory and allergic disorders is controversial, and conflicting results are reported in literature. We examined this association using as indicators of SES parental education and occupation. Persistent cough resulted inversely associated with SES, while current wheezing and atopic dermatitis were directly associated with SES. The role of SES on frequency of respiratory and allergic conditions in Italy needs to be further investigated, although our results confirm a higher frequency of allergic dermatitis and a lower frequency of pers

Latex allergy has reached epidemic proportions in the United States and is increasingly recognized as a significant contributor to morbidity and mortality during medical and surgical procedures. Ultimately, many of the affected patients with recognized latex sensitivity and those who are not yet diagnosed will receive treatment for their allergic reactions to latex in emergency departments. Consequently, emergency physicians must have a comprehensive understanding of the etiology, epidemiology, pathogenesis, treatment, and management of these challenging patients. Groups at high risk include s

Cutting fluids, oils, and coolant are well-known causes of occupational skin diseases. The mission of cutting fluids, their major types, and the cutaneous disorders related with their use are discussed. The relevance and the clinical manifestations of irritant and allergic contact dermatitis secondary to metal working fluids are reviewed.

Common ivy (Hedera helix subsp. helix) is a well-known native and ornamental plant in Europe. Reports on contact dermatitis from ivy have regularly appeared since 1899. Recently, it has been suggested that allergic contact dermatitis from the plant may be under-diagnosed, partly due to lack of commercial patch test allergens. The objective of the article is to present the results of aimed patch testing with the main common ivy allergen, falcarinol, during a 16-year period and review the newer literature. Consecutive patients tested with falcarinol 0.03% petrolatum from May 1993 to May 2009 wer

The reported prevalence of allergic contact dermatitis from topical corticosteroids in clinical populations, in the period 1993-2002, varied from 0.55 to 5.98%. This study is a retrospective analysis of 1153 individuals undergoing routine patch testing in an Occupational Dermatology Clinic in Melbourne, Australia. We report a rate of 0.52% for positive patch test reactions to 5 corticosteroids. Corticosteroids tested were betamethasone-17-valerate, budesonide, Diprosone cream (betamethasone diproprionate 0.05%) (Essex-Pharma, a division of Schering-Plough Pty Ltd, Sydney, Australia), tixocorto

IMPORTANCE: Patch test screening series for patients with dermatitis are limited and may miss clinically relevant contact allergens.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize individuals with dermatitis who showed clinically relevant patch test findings to supplemental (nonscreening) allergens or substances.
DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A 17-year, retrospective cross-sectional analysis (January 1, 2001, to December 31, 2018) of North American Contact Dermatitis Group (NACDG) data from multiple centers in North America was conducted. A total of 43 417 patients with dermatitis underwent patch testing t

The prevalence of psychological disorders in the general population and, therefore, in dermatological and allergological patients continues to increase. Psychodermatology as a branch of dermatology is also becoming ever more relevant in occupational dermatology. Psychological comorbidities and cofactors like depression and anxiety disorders or stress are increasingly important, which must be considered regarding diagnostics and therapy selection. Especially stress is becoming recognized as a possible aggravating factor. There have been numerous studies on selected clinical diseases like atopic

BACKGROUND: Irritant dermatitis, caused by genetic barrier dysfunction in atopic dermatitis or wet work in hand dermatitis, induces innate immune response that might predispose to allergic contact sensitization to less potent sensitizers.
OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine if positive patch test results to less potent allergens are more prevalent in patients with a history of childhood flexural dermatitis or current wet work.
METHODS: We examined our database of patients presenting to a contact dermatitis clinic tested to potential contact allergens as indicated by their history. Allergens f

Natural rubber latex (NRL) and rubber accelerators are well-known causes of occupational skin diseases. The latest epidemiological data on rubber allergy show that rubber additives are still among the allergens most strongly associated with occupational contact dermatitis, however, a decrease in NRL allergy has been confirmed. A review of recent publications on rubber allergens based on the Pubmed database is presented. New glove manufacturing processes have been developed, such as low-protein natural rubber gloves, vulcanisation accelerator-free gloves, or specific-purpose gloves containing a

BACKGROUND: Health care workers (HCWs) are at increased risk for developing occupational skin disease (OSD) such as dermatitis primarily due to exposure to wet work. Identification of risk factors and workplace screening can help early detection of OSD to avoid the condition becoming chronic.
AIMS: To determine risk factors and clinical findings for hand dermatitis using a workplace screening tool.
METHODS: Employees at a large teaching hospital in Toronto, Canada, were invited to complete a two-part hand dermatitis screening tool. Part 1 inquired about hand hygiene practices and Part 2 comp
